Hey there, junior. These songs were the back drop to the lives of MANY people out here. They bring back happy memories of that first love, that first sixth grade dance in the school gym, that first job, your first car, you name it... I was so depressed since moving there from Dearborn, Michigan, that when I drove over the bridge that ran over the Hauser Creek, that I was looking for the open service gates that were sometimes left open. We must be cheesy ourselves in this group of people who love these songs because they are still alive in our hearts I still Love these songs Born in 1969 I grew up listening to them and reminded of the DJ Wolfman Jack announcing them on AM radio stations
“Do You Love Me?” Cheesy?! 😮 “Spirit in the Sky” (Are you crazed?!) “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vita”?! (You’re killing me here) “Just One Look”!😮 I guess one man’s cheesy song is another man’s iconic song.
Remember, these songs were made in a time that had everyone listening and enjoying. No one wrapped in cotton wool or bubble wrap. Just enjoying songs of the time period. At least I can sing along with these not like the crap on the radio now and these sounds are real, not digitally created.
The Archies, despite being a fictional band, actually had numerous hits. While "Sugar Sugar" was the only single to reach the prestigious #1, it wasn't even their first single to reach the top 40 radio play charts in the US ("Bang-Shang-A-Lang" gets that honor at #22), so I'm doubtful they had trouble releasing "Sugar Sugar." Heck, they even had another top ten song in "Jingle Jangle." Remember, just because YOU only know one song sixty years later, doesn't mean they weren't successful in their time.
And as a footnote ... the lead singer of the fictional group "The Archies" was the same vocalist of another not-actual band called The Cuff Links, who had another one-hit wonder with "Tracy". So would we consider him the only artist who actually had TWO "one hit wonders"?
The guy doesn’t understand sarcasm, irony or absurdist literature or music.. that much is certain.. sounds like most nearly illiterate under 30, pseudo- intellectuals..
I don’t think I can describe what the world was like prior to 1990. As a child of the 70’s, it was fun and magical. Granted, those feelings probably are more from being a child than the times, since we had racism and sexism. BUT…it was a world where you still had a sense of community with your neighbors. Your tech was a home phone, a TV with rabbit ears, and a transistor radio. FM radio would play album sides without commercial breaks. The world was smaller, but there was comfort in that. And, you weren’t advertised to constantly. It was better in a lot of ways…so cheesy songs were innocent and fun. I’m grateful I grew up then. I think kids get a crappy deal now, with constant tech, noise, school shooting drills, and dark reality facing them daily. If I could go back to the 70’s, WITH respect for women, people of color, and LGBTQ+, I’d do it in a heartbeat.
For convoy you had to be alive and remember the times. It was in the heat of the oil embargo where gas prices went from 20 cents a gallon to over a dollar a gallon. It was a way to speed and get away from a 55 mile an hour speed limit.
I was thinking this exact same thing, I mean besides the song and other songs there was the movie Convoy, Smokey and the Bandit, Breaker Breaker, and many little boys in school were drawing pictures of 18 wheelers and getting one hell of a kick out of hearing the air horn after motioning to truckers to pull the horn cord. He didn't even mention Eastbound and Down by Jerry Reed. Just like you said, you had to be there to know.
No - it didn't jump that much. It went from 30 something cents to over 50 cents (first oil embargo of 1973). Not a $1/gallon. It broke $1/gal in 1980. 55 mph speed limit did come out in 1974 in response to the first oil embargo not the 2nd one in 1979
@@Redandrangerin the state of Wisconsin the gas prices went from $.30 to over a dollar in 1973 or 1974 along with shortages and long gas lines. If you were lucky enough to have a service station that you used constantly for not only gas but all other car services the owner would let you know when they were getting a delivery because usually it was at 3:00 a clock in the morning. I lived in California in the Marine Corps between 1977 and 1980 so it was definitely before 1980.

You do realize that a song doesn't have to have deep meaning, substantial social impact, perfect metering, or the voice of an angel to still be a damned good song, yes?
Don't you understand that more then half the bands were not one hit wonders nor had one hit wonders. Olivia Newton John, C.W. McCall and Ray Stevens have had multiple mega hits that are still played today
@@AmberWool Olivia Newton John wasn't just 'country' Pat Boone, Perry Como, Frankie Avalon, (I'm sure there are others as well) weren't 'one-hit wonders'. I was beginning to think that the narrator's descriptive vocabulary was limited to only 'cheesy'...
You sir, are a No-Hit Non-Wonder. You speak without a shred of understanding about any of these songs, all of which were extremely popular for good reasons in their own context and time.
Maria Maldaur's Midnight at the Oasis was a cash-in on the sudden prominence of the Arab oil countries. It was VERY cheesy, but hey, it was the 70s. People had sex at the drop of a hat. Many of us in high school listened to it over and over because it was SO BAD, we thought it was funny. And don't start joking about camels ....🤔😂
Ray was a pretty big deal back in the day, so I'm not sure how he ended up on a one hit wonders list lol Then again, there's a lot of questionable choices on this list
Olivia, a one hit wonder? 15 top ten singles, including 5 number one singles, 2 number one Albums. Eleven of her singles, and fourteen of her albums certified gold, with 2 singles going platinum, 2 platinum albums, and four double platinum Albums. The song you used from Grease Charted on Billboard hot 100, and Adult contemporary chart, and the Country Chart.
My take: he included this song to promote his links to other videos he did about Grease. Elvis Presley and ONJ certainly don't fit the one hit wonder definition.
For my part, the narrator of this posting lost most, if not all, of his credibility. Being born in 1957, I spent, literally, my entire teen years in the 70's, and truly enjoyed many of these songs he is trashing. I'm proud to say my 29 year old daughter also appreciates 60's, 70's, and 80's music.
I love it and Toby Mac brought it back on Christian radio and i would tell the youth at church it was an old rock song. They had to hear to believe it meaning it sounded modern to the youth..
How are you calling Olivia Newton John a one hit wonder? She was a four-time Grammy Award winner whose music career included fifteen top-ten singles, including five number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and two number-one albums on the Billboard 200.
The background to the song is the Bruce Lee movies of that era, the first wave of martial arts films. The very cheesy song was an attempt to cash in, nothing more.
@janetwentz3259 me too I have the 45 of Mickey…dis you know the cheerleading outfit Toni Basil wore in the video for the song was her own cheerleading outfit from when she was at Las Vegas High School??????…I hope you will reply to this
I'm going to admit, some of these are cringe but compared to today's music it wasn't disgusting. He's a bit too insulting in his narrative. He seems to forget he'll be pining for the good old days and I hope his generation gets the same treatment.
real snarky a lot of these songs were catchy. DYR is a real A hole. I gave this one a thumbs down. talk about cheesy, this guys whole vibe is cheese.@@SheOfCertainGait

@@MichaelHutchings607885 There are people who love music and have a wide range of musical tastes from classical to jazz and blues to rock and on. But the majority of people just like the music of their youth. Whatever music was popular when they were growing up is the music they think is the best for the rest of their life. That's okay. Some people like to read books, some like to watch Marvel.
I can't go with most of these evaluations...this stuff is dance-worthy, catchy...and most of all...FUN. Something this generation is sorely lacking...plain, old, ordinary FUN. But not to worry, the fun will return...hopefully sooner than later!! Have some FUN already!!
I'm 69 when I was in high school we used to sing , Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye ,at our basketball games in the early seventies , guess we were ahead of our time
To think I jammed out to Inagatadavita by Iron Butterfly back in 94, 95, and 96. That made me a 4th, 5th, and 6th grader. My dad raised me on all genres of music and I couldn’t be more thankful. I have also raised my children in the same way. This included Native American music, show tunes, and I got golden oldies influence from my mom. I wanted to be a famous singer for the longest time. Nowadays I’m kind of glad I never made it. I’ll always love to sing but with my personality type, fame would’ve destroyed me…the big guy upstairs was definitely lookin out for me! Lol Thanks for this!
My husband is 63 & I’m 55,I grew up in the 70’s & 80’s graduating in 86. Maybe I’m just an old soul but Ik more of the old rock, country,R&B and even a little classical. My husband is the same except he listens to more rap old & new. I’ve been my 13 yr old grandson’s constant since day 1. He’s always loved music and has always been exposed to the music we play which is awesome to hear him playing and singing to music that was years even decades before his time. Besides it’s great when we’re all in a vehicle together and he enjoys whatever’s being played,I’m sure this is not the norm but it should be. I want him to always have an open mind about things around him & that it’s ok for him to feel like a song was written just for him and it’s ok to sing as loud as you want no matter what you think u sound like & it’s ok to cry when the words hit your heart like so many do. Ppl need to just stop being & listen really listen. Who knows what kinda changes we could make in this crazy world if only people would stop and listen.
@@Eli-fm9jl well, I couldn’t have said it better myself!! Thank you for sharing that! Good to know there are older folks out there who genuinely enjoy music as just music! "Midnight at the Oasis" was a KILLER track, with some of the most fantastic musicians ever on one record. As a bar musician of 45 years, I still can't play it. And anyone from my generation can't help but smile when they hear the opening lines. And who else has written a love song set in the middle east?
It's called "click-bait." You will see A LOT of TH-camrs doing this by adding a Title which has little/nothing to do with the video; or, use super-slexy pictures which have NOTHING to do with the video. I will automatically give the video a Dislike if a TH-camr does any of those things. @@timkramar9729
I disagree with what you have to say about these songs, even if they are one hit wonders. I truly enjoy all these songs and each one brings back special memories.
Thanks for this video and your undying commitment to making baseless claims without doing any research. People weren't offended by Carl Douglas' 'Kung Fu Fighting,' because we had lives and more important things to worry about than song lyrics. Getting and being offended was considered a weakness. We were strong in those days and didn't tolerate somebody else telling us how to think. We dealt with real issues like the oil embargo, the origin of the term "stagflation," Iran hostage crisis, Mark David Chapman, the reverend Jim Jones, military veterans coming home from Viet Nam, Son of Sam, etc. We were too busy dealing with life to sit around, whine and make up new genders. For entertainment, we watched shows like Sanford & Son, Good Times, All in the Family and its spinoff The Jeffersons, each of which would make this generation seethe.
If we weren't offended by "Kung Fu Fighting" it's because we recognized that it was stereotyping based on ignorance, and positive stereotyping at that. No disrespect intended, only admiration.
1. Olivia Newton John is far from a one hit wonder. 2. Kung Fu Fighting wasn’t considered problematic back then, and I think you’re really having to reach to find things to criticize about it - like the “exaggerated Huhs and Hahas.” 🙄 3. Toni Basil is incredibly talented. She’s choreographed for everything from Sesame Street to Drag Race, has 43 acting credits, and several top ten songs. I typically love your videos, but this one comes across as extreme party-pooping.
Exactly!!! NOBODY was offended by Kung Fu Fighting. Nobody was offended by David Carradine playing Quai Chang Kane. Kung Fu is what made martial arts cool in the West.
Somehow this particular term "OHW" seems to want to diminish the beauty of these wonderful hits that impacted generations of not only music lovers but people who believe in having a good time.
Ah yes the "mad scientist" on the Thomas Doldy track (one of his many hits) was none other than Doctor Magnus Pyke. He held a PhD in Biochemistry and was known for his efforts in giving science a greater role in British society.
Truly the most sad thing is that no novelty songs or cheesy one hit wonders of the caliber of these magnificent tunes could be done today. Not when the radio is owned by two boring corporations, which is one of the reasons pop music is so generic and awful today.
Everything is censored and offensive. Even kids songs. Its ridiculous. One of my favorite artists is Spike Jones. His stuff would never be played today. And its just parody.
My sibs and I used to sing the "Witchdoctor" to our mom while she was driving. Drove her batty! Now that the 4 of us are in our 60s, Mom is 86, we should sing it to her on Thanksgiving Day!
When I was little in the mid '70s my dad told me about neighbors playing loud music when my parents lived on a military base in the 60's in California. Somebody on the other side of the wall kept playing Big Girls Don't Cry on Saturday mornings driving him crazy. In the late '70s my step-sister gave me an old box of 45s and I found Big Girls Don't Cry. I put it on my record player and cranked it up. My father came bursting in the room laughing.
Do you Love Me was a hit for the British Band the Dave Clark Five. This was right at the beginning of the British Invasion era. The DC5 were competing with all the other big groups at that time including the Beatles and the Stones. It was a fun exciting time
It's on various 'hit's of the 60's. I think I have a CD somewhere with it . (and Troggs, Animals, Freddie And The Dreamers, etc) I'll have to see if I still have it now you mentioned DC5 😉
It was better times back then having lived though most of these. Thanks for taking me down memory lane and giving me a good chuckle. All of these songs were better than the rap we hear nowadays and we enjoyed the music regardless of color or lifestyle choices. A cheesy song that brings us all together and puts a smile on our faces is much appreciated.
@@jenniferggreer457 I liked Under Pressure by Queen and David Bowie better. Ice Ice Baby is fine with me, I just thought the comment that it was written by a middle-aged computer was funny.
I have never liked this narrator (who, by the way, does not write ANY of the copy - he is jsut paid to read it), who has a sort of breathy, golly-gee, Leave it to Beaver voice. Play it at 1.25 speed and he sounds almost normal, so the voice is definitely put on.
I take offense to people constantly referring to "boomers" negatively. That's my parents you are talking about. I have theories about about why people have been brainwashed with this mentality. But, I will not go into that now.

Dude, you definitely are so off-base in a few of your assessments of one-hit wonders are. While I appreciate your opinions on music, you've reassured me on the assessment that opinions are like........
I've never heard a 17th-century puritan transported to modern life, desperately trying to sound like a nasally edgelord... until today. Awesome song list, though! :D
I remember getting a box of Post Super Sugar Crisp with "Sugar, Sugar" imprinted on the back. We cut it out and played it on our record player, even though it was off center. An intact box can fetch $100. Impressive how some of those one hit wonders from back then still have traction. "Kung Fu Fighting" was playing off the popularity of a TV show. The word Oriental was not considered a slur then, that is a recent contrivance.
Great post. Now that I've grown older, annoyed whenever today's standards are imposed on the time of my youth, I also realise that we did the same to the times past when we were young... And I have some regret about certain things I said to the elder generations back then. Your example of the word 'oriental' is one of hundreds of cultural & linguistic changes over our lifetimes. This cycle will continue, and I am quite curious about which everyday practices of today will be deemed "wrong" in the not-too-distant future!
Are you kidding? The Streak is a classic!! Ray Stevens is a genius. He actually has some serious songs too. Wait! Stop!! You’re calling Olivia Newton John a one hit wonder??? Haha! What planet 🌎 are YOU from?
Cheesy or not they were hits of the time and were #1 or top ten and still great. Today they still sing hey Mickey to me because my name is Mickey and they were young people. You must have been born under a rock!
As mentioned in my own comment, she’s choreographed everything from Sesame Street to Drag Race, has 43 acting credits, and several top ten hits! This video is ridiculous!
It's clickbait only. None of these are one-hit wonders, none of the artists are, and NONE of them are "cheesy", if this means less than admirable, cheap or tacky. Most are fantastic, memorable songs by fantastic, memorable artists.
She Blinded Me With Silence is one of my favs from that era. Thomas Dolby, The Thompson Twins, Devo, B-52's, Talking Heads. Cheesy, yes, but I can eat dairy just fine...
I actually like a lot of Thomas Dolby's music and Blinded by Science barely scratches the surface of what he plays. I'm a little bit surprised Cars by Gary Numan didn't make the list. I like a lot of his music too, better than the song Cars. I think the Cutting Crew song had better music than most of the other songs on the list, but still wasn't great. I remember hearing most of them on the radio.

Just like you said, you had to be there to know.
not only was Convoy a great song, it inspired Sam Peckinpah to make a film which was the most commercially successful film of his career
Jerry Reed's East bound and down would not fit the title because Jerry did have other top ten hits.

Good Times was a spinoff of The Jeffersons.
