Transparency is def important when it comes to working in a creative industry, the amount of recent grads i see in graphic design that think they are going to be making a lot of money were never told, you usually have to work yourself up to that level and put the work in to get to that pay grade or on the other end, take on a job that doesnt pay them enough for their skills
just when I started second-guessing myself whether I could actually make it as an artist in a third world country, watching this video helped me realize that an 'art job' has many possiblities... so if art is what I want to do for a self-fulfilling means of bringing food to the table, I should just do and figure out what works

I've been trying to figure out how to make money by doing art as well, but I've heard that the industry is quite questionable in regards to 3d modelers and SFX effect artist, so I've been a bit hesitant. I've never considered being a storyboard artist though.

I get folks would ask you “why not just quit?” and I get some days it may suck, but you invested so much time in school to go do what you love. I can appreciate your reasoning for staying to. Making your own film one day would be amazing! If you’re stuff expands enough maybe you could open your own studio. Also even with taxes that’s an amazing income. Btw is there much of a chance for animators to do storyboarding? I am not going to school for story boarding but it is also something I enjoy.
This is the first time I watch a video where the person doesn't encourage to leave your job, I think this approach is more realistic because not everybody lives in a good economy where they can leave their job easily trying to be self-employed and that kind of stuff... Cheers for that!

As a Animatior that wants to be a freelancer for digital painting design for online work. I always wanted to work alone which means working remotely and at home it's more of a happier environment and fun job and definitely getting paid for the salaries is very important for benefits of the job. As a person that does not want to work with anybody I always the type of person that likes to just work alone I think freelance is better for me. I never want to work for the rat race because I'm scared of the bosses that will treat me poorly if I tried my best at those regular jobs and they feel like they could treat me bad at the job if i fail Their work business because the job could be fast pace and in a rush I'm just the type of guy that likes to take my time to get the work done because it could be a longer project. I'm just the type of guy that if I'm good at something I should get it for a job career and I love art and drawing and that's how I became an animator last year starting animating my very first projects ever and that's why I want to take it to the next level of freelancing for a online remote job. But when it comes to animation everyone is different they like to work at the studio where the bosses are there or they want to work by themselves which means freelancing animations and digital cartoon art. 👨🏽💻✍️🎬🎨🖌️📽️📺🏆

Agree a lot with the agent part! After I got representation, my pay scale skyrocketed. Even with their cut, it's 100% worth it. Wish I had sought a rep much sooner.

Good question! Honestly if you live in coastal / major cities like LA, NY, SF it is pretty expensive and that’s where most of the animation studios are in the US. 70k can probably be good to start with, but might be difficult to do things like buy a house or car if you have to pay for it on that income alone 😬 thankfully in animation you should expect raises for each project you roll onto so 70k should mostly be an entry level role
Just to add more context, I live near NY and combined income between me and my wife is around 250k. I would say that if you want to live in New York City and rent a place (studio or 1 bedroom apartment) in a reasonable location, you would need to earn at least 100k+ just to barely cover your rent, bills, and tax with some money left to spend some other stuff (dining out, travels, light hobbies, etc.).
Do you ever feel stretched to thin by all the work you take on? Do you have time for friends, family, entertainment? Im a studio animator, and I have freelance on the side as well as an indie game im making, and I feel like its all so much and Im not sure how other people are able to juggle these things better than me.
there definitely are moments I feel stretched thin, especially during crunch time, but in general I find that if I plan things ahead (usually weeks to months) I am able to get most things done healthily. A quote I used to just say to myself in school is "One shot (in film terms) a day, keeps crunch time away", so if I chip away at a big project just a little bit each day, I will usually get it done as long as I don't save everything last minute. But overall yes I do still find time for relaxation and family/friends, especially on the weekends because we are all busy on the weekdays anyway

If you are part of any communities / groups online, it would be good to even initiate one and do it anonymously. I also have one for the publishing world (but it's not approved to be public), but it is kept private in a discord group. Someone just needs to start an excel sheet and spread the word within the online group!

But i've got a couple of questionn that I hope you could answer it :') 1. when you say $70.000 per year(exclude tax), how much is your average living cost? As a non American fellas $70.000 is a very big amount for me, when my sallary alone is less than $3600 per year. Well yeah, this may be a sensitive topic (at least in my country it is a personal thing most people wont share) but i hope you could share with us. 2. Are you an entry level / junior / senior / supervisor storyboard artist? let's say if you're on the higher level or the highest level, do you still got to learn more on your job? where did you get to learn? is it from the fresh idea of your junior? or do you keep getting some advice from someone? I'm an entry level storyboard artist myself, so I keep wondering how did I get to learn new things or more things about boarding when i got promoted to higher levels haha. Thanks in advance!
Don't forget Tax, Living Expenses, Gas(if u even have a car + depending on what type and how old) food, and if you are single you can save it up and "maybe" live comfortably but if u have a kid then lol.. + school expense, Lunch money, Everything that a kid needs money, Let see.. There is also if u rent ( if u don't own any house) Monthly Rent Fee, Water bill.. Electricity bill... hmmm 200k a year is not enough to cover these 🤣 well unless u live like a caveman... or in a rural area
I have a question that you may have some insight on and I really hope it doesnt come across as rude! I was looking into salaries and it seems like the average storyboard artist salary is significantly higher than that of an animator, and I was just a bit confused as to why this is-- I thought animation on average takes more time? or do storyboard artists have more/other responsibilities that im not aware of. Thank u and I love ur channel!
Hi Carp, that's a good question. I don't have an official answer for this, but take what you will with my personal experience. As a storyboard artist, you juggle a bit more responsibility than an animator might. As an animator, you focus more on individual shots, while storyboard artists have to cover entire scenes / sequences. With that, there are a lot of other things to juggle on top of that such as cinematography, acting, camera, pitching, and sometimes writing. Many times storyboard artists have to scratch out entire scenes they did and reboard them all over again due to rewrites for the script, so they have to work fast to board a whole new sequence / scene again. This is of course not to downplay the role of animators as they also require a lot of hard work, but usually in animation, you don't have to conceive the entire idea from scratch, and you work with what the storyboards have already provided you with. I'm sure there are some other animation jobs out there that may pay more than storyboard artists as well, but just have not come across those yet. But maybe things like an animation director would pay more than a storyboard artist due to the leadership position.

Women make stuff women want to buy, and women are spend way more money on art then men. This is pretty basic marketing. There is a reason they so much of what you see advertised targets women and children. Women spending cash is the foundation of capitalism. Men are traditionally driven to earn more because it attracts women which then gets spent by women once they are married. Take women out of the equation and most men would be happy with a case of beer and a playstation. This actually goes much deeper and touches on why society is falling apart. With marriage breaking down due to hook up culture, dating apps, and bias courts, the push to get women into the work force was dialed up in order to get more money in women's purses rather in men's pockets. It why we have seen the education system go from male dominated to female dominated. And why being a lady boss is promoted so vigorously. It has nothing to do with feminism and everything to do with women's spending habits. City planners and marketing experts understand all this very well.
This is simply not true. Women artists are the greatest and that's the fact of life. Don't believe me? read that long paragraph comment deadhouse whatever wrote.

the biggest thing i learned from this video is ✨i am far too underpaid✨ and yet i am not surprised. The rates in Canada in animation is far too spread out and disappointing, especially compared to the states. My salary is less than half what she makes and somehow i was "lucky" to get it....... sigh

1. when you say $70.000 per year(exclude tax), how much is your average living cost? As a non American fellas $70.000 is a very big amount for me, when my sallary alone is less than $3600 per year. Well yeah, this may be a sensitive topic (at least in my country it is a personal thing most people wont share) but i hope you could share with us.
2. Are you an entry level / junior / senior / supervisor storyboard artist? let's say if you're on the higher level or the highest level, do you still got to learn more on your job? where did you get to learn? is it from the fresh idea of your junior? or do you keep getting some advice from someone? I'm an entry level storyboard artist myself, so I keep wondering how did I get to learn new things or more things about boarding when i got promoted to higher levels haha.

Don't forget Tax, Living Expenses, Gas(if u even have a car + depending on what type and how old) food, and if you are single you can save it up and "maybe" live comfortably but if u have a kid then lol.. + school expense, Lunch money, Everything that a kid needs money, Let see.. There is also if u rent ( if u don't own any house) Monthly Rent Fee, Water bill.. Electricity bill... hmmm 200k a year is not enough to cover these 🤣 well unless u live like a caveman... or in a rural area

I have a question that you may have some insight on and I really hope it doesnt come across as rude! I was looking into salaries and it seems like the average storyboard artist salary is significantly higher than that of an animator, and I was just a bit confused as to why this is-- I thought animation on average takes more time? or do storyboard artists have more/other responsibilities that im not aware of. Hi Carp, that's a good question. I don't have an official answer for this, but take what you will with my personal experience. As a storyboard artist, you juggle a bit more responsibility than an animator might. As an animator, you focus more on individual shots, while storyboard artists have to cover entire scenes / sequences. With that, there are a lot of other things to juggle on top of that such as cinematography, acting, camera, pitching, and sometimes writing. Many times storyboard artists have to scratch out entire scenes they did and reboard them all over again due to rewrites for the script, so they have to work fast to board a whole new sequence / scene again. This is of course not to downplay the role of animators as they also require a lot of hard work, but usually in animation, you don't have to conceive the entire idea from scratch, and you work with what the storyboards have already provided you with. I'm sure there are some other animation jobs out there that may pay more than storyboard artists as well, but just have not come across those yet. But maybe things like an animation director would pay more than a storyboard artist due to the leadership position.

women artists are wealthier cause anything a woman does men wanna buy and invest i mean they are money magnets it’s impressive that they think it’s the art people are buying
Women make stuff women want to buy, and women are spend way more money on art then men. This is pretty basic marketing. There is a reason they so much of what you see advertised targets women and children. Women spending cash is the foundation of capitalism. Men are traditionally driven to earn more because it attracts women which then gets spent by women once they are married. Take women out of the equation and most men would be happy with a case of beer and a playstation. This actually goes much deeper and touches on why society is falling apart. With marriage breaking down due to hook up culture, dating apps, and bias courts, the push to get women into the work force was dialed up in order to get more money in women's purses rather in men's pockets. It why we have seen the education system go from male dominated to female dominated. And why being a lady boss is promoted so vigorously. It has nothing to do with feminism and everything to do with women's spending habits. City planners and marketing experts understand all this very well.
This is simply not true. Women artists are the greatest and that's the fact of life. Don't believe me? read that long paragraph comment deadhouse whatever wrote.

the biggest thing i learned from this video is ✨i am far too underpaid✨ and yet i am not surprised. The rates in Canada in animation is far too spread out and disappointing, especially compared to the states. My salary is less than half what she makes and somehow i was "lucky" to get it....... sigh
