    Hey Ho,
    Good Video, as usual. One Tipp from me: The Air Filter has to be really dry, otherwise starting can be a Problem. Best way to dry it is with the exhaust Gasflow of another bike. Just hold it in to the stream in a distance of about 50cm / 2inch until it turns dry.

    Good topic. Excellent tip re hitting the kill switch if things go pear shaped. I was lucky to avoid a full engine rebuild on my WR last year by just hitting the kill as I went too deep on a crossing. Still quite a task getting her sorted as she sucked a gut full of water but definitely better than a rebuild. One other tip I would suggest is walking bikes through with two riders per bike (one each side of the handle bars) for the very deep and fast flowing crossings, we used this technique recently in the VIC High Country with good success. Yes you get wet but it sure beats a wrecked bike!

    I just used the tips from this video today (plug out, water out, drain float, clean plug). Drowned my Xtrainer, riding alone, it sucked. I killed the battery tho. it was ALMOST starting! Had to get a jump start a couple hours later from a DEP officer on a ATV. No one else on the trails all afternoon. (I had battery jumper cables). Bad afternoon. Going to do the transmission oil, carb cleaning, air filter service this weekend. Also change out the fuel in the tank, just in case.
    And I already ordered a kick starter. Screw this battery dying crap ever again LOL.

    Artful Alias, I agree as far as avoiding wd 40 for electrical connections. It does conduct electricity. I learned the hard way when my bike wouldn’t start after cleaning out the connectors with wd 40. A mechanic told me to use real electrical contact cleaner, and after cleaning the wd 40 out of the connectors, the bike fired right up!

    Good tips! I also carry a bic lighter or two in that waterproof ziplock bag. It helps to dry the spark plug and you can also add a small amount of fuel to the spark plug hole and flash the cylinder to get rid of any water left after flipping the bike and draining (I’ve used this method on drowned outboards and it does work well).
    Cheers, Kevan

    Check the routing of your breather hoses, seal of the air box, sparkplug wrench, tools to tear down your carb, airbox and exhaust, dielectric grease in wire connections, walk the crossing or follow the other guy, finger on the kill switch and don't die. I think you summed it up pretty good!

  • @thenobleandmightybeaver4411

    We massively flooded 2 bikes last year with some nasty, muddy swamp water. One of the bikes was a big beast (650cc desert racer), the other a 250cc 4 stroke. We knew we were heading into some dodgy patches because we had reece'd the route the day before. We took a quad with us which ended up being a lifesaver because we were able to tow both the bikes out to a road for pick up. Point being, when possible, plan ahead and have a recovery plan. If we had had to push those bikes out of the bush it would have been hours of full on suck.
    On a side note, getting the bikes running again wasn't too arduous. We took the spark plugs and air filters out, and hung the bikes from the front tires from some trees for a few hours, changed the oil and both bikes were good to go the next day.

  • @Britishshooter
    @Britishshooter 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Excellent practical video. Only thing I would add is that it is a good precaution to wade across first with a dry stick first to check depth against your bike. Water depth can be very deceptive and there can be deep pools in the centre of a river. If you are in a group then a tow rope can be used to pull a bike with rider walking beside it across in really deep rivers rather than risk riding and destroying your engines.

    Great video as usual. Use real contact cleaner for electrical connections. If they're stuffed with waterproof electrical grease ahead even better. This may sound like heresy but I don't like WD40 except maybe on garden tools. I admit it is a water displacer, thus WD [not a lubricant or protector]. But it leaves behind a residue that attracts contaminants and hardens like shellac. If I have to use it on anything mechanical or electrical to flush water, I then flush the WD with the appropriate gunk for the application.

    Crap, I didn't realize the risk of internal engine rust, drowned my bike two times during one ride a few weeks ago and I've been waiting for the new oil to arrive and thus haven't changed it yet. I wonder if I should pre-flush the engine with a wrong oil and then flush it again once the correct one arrives, or whether I should just wait for the correct one, as it will only be a few more days?

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i'd would do the flush immediately, freeman. on the cambodia motorbike tour, bikes were drowned everyday. if it was really bad they would flush with the cheapest motor oil twice then put the good stuff in.

    • @Dowent
      @Dowent 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@crosstrainingenduro You are spot on, I did some additional reading and found out I should do the flushes until there is little to no emulsion and the last flush should be after a short ride, so that all the water is mixed with oil, since it likes to stick to some aluminum parts. So I've put a mineral oil I've had lying around and will do the flush again (maybe twice, depending on emulsion in the oil I've just put in) once the good one arrives. Apparently, cheaping out on this could really bite you in the arse, thanks a lot for the advice :) .

That's because the ones with radiators are too heavy for most of us... being generally smaller/shorter than you guys hehehe. It's very rare to see 200 to 300cc here. Aside from being heavy, it's usually too expensive for most of us weekend riders. :-)
      I asked because on our last ride, we crossed a river after speeding along a dirtroad. The engines were still hot and we just crossed right away. You can see steam and hear the water boil as the bikes enter the river. One of the guys said we should've waited for the engines to cool down. The rest of us looked at him and like.. you want us to wait while we're still pumped with andrenaline. :-)
