  • Prince Surojo was crowned King of Yogyakarta on June 28, 1812 with the title Sultan Hamengkubuwana III. But, there is a high price paid for it. Sultan HB III had to lose a number of his territories, including Kedu, Jipang (Blora), Japan (Mojokerto), Grobogan, and parts of Pacitan.
In exchange for the surrender of some areas of the Yogyakarta Sultanate, the British gave 100,000 real estate annually to Sultan HB III.
That is one of the agreements that must be fulfilled by Prince Surojo to Thomas Stamford Raffles, Head of the British Government in Java. At that time, Britain had indeed taken over the Dutch colonies, including Yogyakarta. If you want to ascend the throne, Prince Suraja must agree with Raffles' will.
Aside from being obliged to release a number of areas of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta to the British, Sultan HB III was still forced to fulfill two other points. First, the armed forces of the Sultanate of Yogyakarta must be reduced and leave only a few palace security soldiers.
And secondly, Sultan HB III had to give up some of the land located not far from the palace to his uncle, Prince Natakusuma, whom Raffles considered meritorious. In that area then stood the new government of Yogyakarta, the Duchy of Pakualaman. Prince Natakusuma became the first leader with the title Paku Alam I.
