I have hesitated to say anything, but I'm going to now. You have come so far with Ember, Lucy! He's much more rideable for sure. But his jumping is . . . very odd. I have only rarely seen him jump with a normal bascule and hock hitch. At this point, if I were you (and I realize I'm not!), I would back up and try to find out what's up with that. I would set up a jump chute with just simple jumps and see how he jumps unridden. I would also concentrate on poles and cavaletti/grids with canter poles to encourage him to take off normally over smaller fences. In the meantime I would stop competing. And if nothing changes, I would have a vet look at him. He has been at this long enough to settle in and jump more normally, unless there is a reason why he cannot. With TBs, they tend to have that bred-in "go-go-go" attitude that can mask problems. I hope you don't mind my saying this--I just really feel that there is something "off" here. Maybe it's just experience and fitness (in which case taking a step back and working with a chute and with poles/grids will help), or maybe it's something more. But I think now is the time to find out. Wishing you both all the best!!! 🙂
I agree with you 100%!! In my 30+ years journey with riding/jumping/competing horses myself, as well as watching the top international show jumping and eventing riders, I have never seen a horse who jumps like this consistently. I’ve seen some weird jumping technique from horses jumping from a bad distance, or from being spooked or over faced. However, as much hard work which Lucy has put into Ember, and how much improvement and progress they’ve made, I feel confident in saying that there is something wrong physically in Ember which doesn’t allow him to use his entire body -most notably his legs- to jump correctly. I am in no way a veterinarian myself, but I have to wonder if Lucy did a pre purchase exam with x-rays in Ember before buying him. We all have different ways of doing things, but personally, I would have a vet out first thing to examine Ember thoroughly, watch him go on a lunge line and through a jump chute and THEN watch Lucy ride and jump him to see if there is a difference in the horse’s way of going. Perhaps he moves and jumps fine freely, but having the weight of a rider (even a thin one) might cause painful pressure in his back, which can affect his bascule and use of legs. My reason for having the vet come out first is that you are able to get real answers more quickly than by doing your own experimentation. I realize that not everyone can afford to have a vet come out to diagnose a problem like this. Many people can only afford the vet for emergency issues. But if a diagnostic vet call is within budget, that would be MY first action. I would want to make sure my horse didn’t have any injuries or joint degeneration which I could exacerbate by continuing to ride him/her while trying different training/riding techniques. Not saying your way is wrong; I just find it much more expedient to have a vet exam and any necessary imaging done right away, so the horse owner and vet can discuss the vet’s findings, find out if the problem is able to be fixed, and if so, get started right away on a vet-prescribed treatment plan. Of course, unfortunately, the news may be bad. Ember could have a confirmation issue or congenital condition which prevents him from jumping properly and, more importantly, without causing pain to my horse. That would be my suggestion.
Oh please.. she knows her horse best. Stop trying to be trainers for a horse and rider you’ve never even met. If Ember was in pain one, I’m sure those who actually know him would have investigated it. And two he wouldn’t have come this far in his rideability if he were actually in pain. Just because you have never seen a horse go this way doesn’t mean it’s wrong. He looks perfectly happy and confident in himself with is proven by just how relaxed he was going around the course.
His rideability has come so far. It looks like you are a team now. He really seems to be understanding you and you are definitely understanding him. Love to see it! ❤
Love your videos!! Not only is it great to see your progress with Ember but your videos are fun and down to earth, love them, thanks for sharing the journey! You two have improved by leaps and bounds ❤️
That top would-be so good for x.c. ,AND those britches LOOK So smart. IT all WAYS is better in the sunshine. HAVE A good day all , Amber looked so amassing, AND ALL the best. 😄😄😊😊👍👍👍💟 And a BIG thank YOU to ALL how helped .
Ember is looking really well and he is jumping well too! Just some more practice will even out his "exuberance" over some of his early fences! Lucy you're looking great too! love the new britches and SPF top... looking forward to the next vlogs.
Hey a UK person finally taking the advice of long sleeves in the sun. Sun shirts are the best. Love Florida. We've literally tried the exact same shirts sleeved and short and no sleeves. Sleeves wins every time. For a cheap alternative fishing shirts with vents
Well Done Lucy and Ember!!! That was great, Ember jumped his socks off Bless him! Well done for 5 place 😄. I hope you enjoyed the pub/bbq Lucy. Great Video!!!! xxxxx
That was absolutely fantastic and about a million miles away from the first vlog hacking him with Justine!!! Wherein I was sure he was gonna pull your arms off, plant his skull into your skull, and catapult you into something..... 😳🤣🤣 He looked very happy and more relaxed than I've ever seen him 🥰❤️ Lucy Robinson, you're back 😄❤️ Congratulations!! 👏🥰
Really enjoyed this how far have you come together!! Have a look at Hinterland bridles here in NZ beautiful quality bridles and my horse wears something similar to Embers. Be relatively cheap against the NZD. Just a thought 💁

He's really doing well. He sometimes does this strange elevated bunny hop! I think that's when you notice the air! Great job Ember and Lucy!
He tried his little heart out over every fence, what an improvement! All that hard work has paid off. Onwards and upwards from here!
He is so much more rideable. A few more rounds and he will relax sooner in the round. What a point to start the event season from
I loved seeing Ember "light up" when you took off up the hill. It was so cute. Ah, that's better. I'm a X-C horse!
Ember is looking so much steadier and confident in his work! Great job! Nice to have your own support squad ❤
His rideability has come so far. It looks like you are a team now. He really seems to be understanding you and you are definitely understanding him. Love to see it! ❤
