I lived on Cambridge Ave during my Patterson Coop years, after graduating I moved to NYC to attend FIT and Juilliard. Dayton was wonderful when I was a kid and before they tore down so many schools, E J Brown, Colonel White, Patterson, Jefferson etc,,,Dayton and Salem Mall and Downtown was the place to be back then...I miss Flying Pizza still today.

Back in the 80s, my parents were given a suspended 30 day jail sentence for not painting the trim on their house. That same house on Riverside Dr is abandoned. My mom sold it after my dad died in 1995. They were told that it was on a main thoroughfare and had to be kept pristine as visitors were more likely to see those homes. It was recently sold to the neighbors next door. Not sure if they'll tear it down and just use the land. It seems beyond repair. I cry whenever I see it. They were so proud as it was the first, and only, home they owned. We even had 3 weddings in there.

Lived in Dayton area for over 18 years. My son's mother graduated from Meadowdale. My son played for CJ. When i moved there to go to Central State, Dayton was the place to be. Salem Mall was still open. The clubs and bars used to jump. Always was hood, but respectable. Felt like home, is home. I've seen it change over the years though. And not for the best. But it's going on in alot of urban areas around the country.

i feel for you & your frustration. the trash problem in dayton is severe. dayton city leaders seem to be more focused on downtown. the $ 90 million spent on the arcade would have gone a long way towards trash removal & enforcement along with demolition of the over 10,000 derilect houses. the problems are not only west dayton, but the entire city & it's getting worse. if the city leaders would take a real interest in cleaning up dayton i'm sure many of the residents would follow suit & work to clean up their neighborhoods. if the heat was turned up on nan wahley via the media-the dayton daily news & the 5 t.v. stations. perhaps the downtown area wouldn't be as important as the rest of the city. take pride in the entire city, nan, not just downtown.

So I understand your hearts in the right place but just giving abandoned houses to homeless ppl to aquat in is a great recipe if you want the house's to get even shittier and probably burn down in the winter.
What the coty of dayton needs to do is make it as easy as possible to buy, fix up, and own property (this includes everything from tax breaks to not allowing worthless HOA's have their way). In short less shitty leftist democrat policies and more logical freedom-minded libertarian ordinances.

@J do you understand what per capita means?? If a village has a popular of 20.000 and half of them get murdered they would have a higher murder rate per capita than Dayton even though Dayton's population is 140.000 that doesn't mean that there's more crime there or its more dangerous, it just me its concentrated to a smaller population which makes the rate high for that particularl place. If Chicago swapped crime and murders with Dayton, Dayton would be completely devastated while Chicago would be at least 75 percent safer than it is now.

It crazy living my whole life on the west coast I just don’t understand abandoned houses. Where do these people go . Out here no one can afford a house let alone abandon one. I have one more kid to finish raising. She is a sophomore in high school. I’m in the laborer s union. So I can sigh up at any local hall in the country. Maybe I’ll just get me some abandoned homes. I can’t afford one here rent goes up every time I sign a new lease. I figure it’s worth a try worse comes to worse I can always abandon it. No way would I ever just abandon a home. Sorry I just don’t understand. Makes no sense to me to just leave your house. But like I said I’ve only visited Ohio. I found it to be a nice place. Looks full of opportunity. Like the next frontier.

Thanks I will things just keep getting more expensive out here. Plus there are a lot of cash rich people that outbid us normal working stiffs by paying cash up front instead of financing. And to top it off they pay over asking price.
And also drugs are a citation-able offense not a felony or even a misdemeanor. So druggies and homeless flock here. And a lot of cities ( like Portland and Oakland) actually defunded the police. So you can steal strip and load a car on to a trailer in broad daylight. On a busy street here in Portland, and not get arrested. The west coast is sinking time to flee.

Omg, I cannot believe it, I'm from Dayton ohio, come every year, I was born and raised at love chapel COGIC Church, that's at 12:06 Oak Ridge drive, is like when the street ends, you write to your right is the church, you can see it across the street from more for less or save a lot of whatever it was, I've been living here 15 years cuz I had to get away from dayton, but I grew up on gettysburg, First and the blueberry project, then we were we moved to the projects, which we called the whole, it was across the street from Timber creek, on Cornell, I love this though man keep it up, if we could bring somebody, to invest in our city, and really make it beautiful, Dayton can bounce back, and I am trying so so so so so so so so so so very hard, to pitch a reality show, about addicts, and the way the black community looks, and they say that that we have more black on crime than anywhere, well look at where the f*** you put us, you put us in a place to where nobody else is even going to come to, you they built the project for black people, because when people started move into the north, had a Mississippi and alabama, and all of that, Chicago Ohio but at the time, it was the three biggest cities chicago, detroit, and new york, and they like will f*** if they going to come up here and leave them out of numbers, we got to have somewhere to put them, like we don't want them living next door for us, so if our kids didn't see m************ out there selling crack on the corner all day long, look at our damn neighborhood, we can't even get our kids to cut our grasses and s*** like that, take out lawn mowers out, and and make them some money, so when they see cats making hundred of dollars by the day, and all they have to do, is to find a friend that does the same thing, and kick it with them and they house all day long, and wait for the phone to rain, then go stand up here on the block, and just take time that's what they do, so dating to me is like a ghost town, there's just nothing there whatsoever, or I can Boston you know we got the subway, even when I fly home I don't get a ride to the airport, I just take the train, and then we got another one for like I think it's like $15 you can take it to New York City nobody here drives whatsoever, because it's traffic all day long, they take the train to work, and usually parking near a train station, and then try a phone, they usually use the cars on the weekend all day when they're all, but there is no like well they got Kings Island and Cedar point, but how often do we really get to see that s*** and go there, like it's just ridic

Two years later and it's not gotten much better. The amount of trash I see in the allies and sidewalks in my neighborhood (Walnut Hills) is infuriating. I've literally seen cars stop, roll down their windows and just dump their McDonald's trash on the road and then take off. It makes my f'n blood boil. Props to guys like this that at least try to clean some of this shit up.

Why don't you take them, to the DV area, Grand Avenue( my mom moved us from North Lake hills, when I was 10 years old, to Grand, well between Grand and vernon, and Grand and Everett, but really it was Grand and vernon, this white house would have fenced in yard) , and S3uperior, and lexington, Oxford, Riverview, but particularly grand, and show them all of those basically mentioned, that look like haunted houses, that are just sitting there, literally just sitting, and I don't even know if you remember, on Cambridge in DV, was the I think it was the 1000 lighthouse, or the million lighthouse, where it is Caucasian very nice man, will literally put that many lights on the house he owns, and probably was renting, and have Santa Claus and a all type of candy, hot cocoa and just all type of look activities it was like a walkthrough you couldn't come back through the front door, and it was free, to everybody long as they were with children they were small, and it hasn't been done again, since I want to say maybe 94, and and 94 I was 12, I believe, because I was born in 83, and I'm 38 now, wow I didn't even realize that other place those numbers, but it looks just like one of those spooky haunted mansions, they will make the best houses in the world, from The Little Athletes we got from dayton, and like a lawyers and things like that, and one of them would just be too mother f****** stupid, if they made a haunted house out of it, for halloween, like that would be the best s*** ever, I'm out to fighting a good fight dog.

Former Dayton city commissioner Jeff Mims was just sworn in as Mayor of Dayton last Monday, January 3 ... Mayor JEFF MIMS time to roll up the sleeves ... you might also ask where was he and what were his priorities as a city commissioner to let it get and stay like this in the area he represented? I bet you all didn't vote for this kind of performance. In fact, get Gov. Mike DeWine in there.

I really dont get why people don't take more pride in where they live. It's really not that hard. If everyone did their part it would be so much better. But the problem is ALOT of people are on drugs and that shit takes control of people to where they really dont even care about anything but that.

How folks know every nok & cranny in the hoods, ghetto, & country of Detroit? They know areas I didn't even known or ben 2. It's only the bad neighborhoods they do it in but more than one time they would hit up a good lookin middle class neighborhood 🤬. Like mine down the street from my house a year or 2 ago 🤬. And my neighborhood iz famous for Motown, hip hop, rock ñ rock singers, rappers, dancers so WTF? They do it here they will hit up any middle class hood next to the poor ones 🤬
