Korg Volca Drum Demo

  • In this video, Luke walks us through the Korg Volca Drum.
Based on a simple trigger waveform, wave folder and overdrive are used to add overtones and distortion, and then a waveguide resonator effect brings the sound to life. The six-part DSP synth engine was designed with a completely different philosophy than conventional drum machines, and generates a wide range of unexpectedly different sounds. And of course, you can play those sounds from the volca-style sequencer.

I enjoy this guy's videos, he explains how to use the functions of various equipment so well. Watching these has helped me with so many of my Korg devices. Well done for taking the time to prepare such useful information for each video, for me it's added a huge amount of value to my devices. Thanks.

I just got mine this week and it's incredible. You can make really nice sounds with melodies as well as drums ( I've already made some really nice house stuff on it) but then you can turn around and make the gnarliest metallic sounds that you've ever heard. Whenever I sit down with it, no matter what I end up making, it's super fun to use.

Dear Korg. I am requesting the following very simple firmware update for the KV Drum to vastly simplify accessibility/usability. At present, the source/modulator/EG options are on an endless loop so using the notched parameter knob simply keeps endlessly cycling through options. Would it be possible to put them in a fixed list so that when one dials the notched Parameter knob to the left, it returns to a fixed top of said list (or the bottom of the list if rotated to the right)?

This is a wonderful drum synth but it’s be better if voices could be triggered by individual midi notes and not be locked to pattern sequence. Korg should make a ‘deluxe’ version that does so because it’s such a nice engine. Though you can get good variation editing in real time . Correct me if I’m wrong.

Hi, I'm thinking of buying either the beat or this one, which one would you suggest? Consider that I have no experience at all with drum machines, programming patterns etc. so it would be my very first machine of this kind and my priority is to get something easy to learn yet usable (not a "toy")

TheStarshipBand the beats would be good to learn on because it got its stock sounds. The drum might be too advanced for you to start with but it is way more flexible in terms of the sound shaping. Beats drum sounds are static besides tuning and decay

You have to do something in your head, there is no predefined odd meter.
      16 step = 5*(3/4)=15/4 and deactivate the last - same with 5/4
      Or 2*(7/8) , deactivate 2.
Works with my Volca sample v1 and I used the manual of Volca drum from online, so it will work the same way.
As of now I can’t say how synchronization with other devices works if you set then to the same meter. My Volca drum will arrive in a week.

It has a midi in port, so you can trigger sound via midi. The different keys on the device can be triggered via a midi keyboard. When you say "pitch" I assume you're referring to the different pitch of different keys, and/or the pitch bend. In regard to pitch bend, I don't know if pitch bend data is monitored by this device.

I'm having "DCDERR" problems updating the firmware on the Korg Volca Drum I purchased from #Absolute Music so here seems just as good as any place to send out a cry for help. I've downloaded the updater zip file from korg. I've connected the headphone out of my pc speakers to the sync-in of my Volca Drum via the sync cable that came with the KVD. I've pressed powerup+func+rec on my Volca Drum and get the "SYSUP" message on screen. I then play the Volca update data
file only for the Volca Drum display to say "DCDERR." What am I doing wrong? I've tried playing the file in Windows Media Player, Groove and Audacity and get the same error message. Similarly, I have tried playing the file at various volumes and still get "DCDERR." Any ideas? Why couldn't Korg simply fit their Volcas with 21st century connectivity?

And I believe the basic sounds are mainly for futuristic electronic sounds. It lacks basic drum sounds. I mean can you simulate the intro of Gimme all your loving by ZZ top on it? I wonder if you can even simulate the beat of Fade to Grey or Kraftwerk but correct me if I am wrong.....
