I am truly blessed to have been showed this movie when I was in middle school by my History teacher Mr. Lavin. I’ll cherish this movie and the music forever. Real art. Thanks Mr. Lavin and I wish you the best.

I’m 67 years old and have been a devoted fan of this movie since it came out, it’s my #1 favorite movie. The music in this movie is absolutely perfect. I have the soundtrack to this movie. I often play it when I’m on the road. I can follow the movie word for word just by listening to the soundtrack. Even though Crow Killer and the movie have little in common, it’s still a great movie and a great soundtrack. It’s sad to think of the PC culture these days which make movies like this “obsolete”. Thank God I’m OLD!!!

When I learned I was going to be a father again, my wife asked me what I wanted to name our son. I replied, "I shall call him Caleb. It is a name I have always admired." She liked it, and Caleb is now 17 years old. I fell in love with this movie decades ago, learned to hunt and trap, and desired nothing more that living a life like that.

I need to throw in another comment....all throughout the movie when you hear the bull elk bugleing its so very cool....but nowhere near as cool when I moved to Denver in 78 and got to go hunting in 79 to my first combjned Bull/ buck rifle season and was down off the side of a dirt and gravel road high in the White river national forest where there was an animal trail down to a spot where I found a good place to sit and watch for movement. It was a little bit after sunrise and I heard a bull or two bugle from the far side of some hills in front of me. Ive never felt a bigger chill up and down my spine and never felt more alive than I did at that moment.
    Felt like home.

“I told my pap and my mam I was coming to the mtns to trap and be a mtn man. Acted like they was gut-shot. Says, “Son, make your life go here, here’s where the peoples is. Them mtns is for animals and savages”. I says, “Mother Gue, the Rocky Mtns is the marrow of the world. And by god, I was right”
There is no man made piece of art that speaks to me as this film does (sorry, Hem). It evokes something primitive in me, something kinder, something gentler. If you care to bear witness to the true savagery in this world, you need do no more than immerse yourself in modern civilization.

Film artistry on an entirely different level of high quality. Visually stunning, captivating and energizing are words that come up. This film exudes a reverent respect and longing for a primitive freeness back to a simpler time when determination, tenacity, skills, courage and survival were the priorities of each day.
“The Ballad” alone speaks of a life philosophy that transports your mind. The mountain men of that era were a different breed of free spirits that were the most rugged of the rugged, to match the environments and the harshest of what Nature confronted one with.
Movies like this aren’t made anymore. Redford crushed it with this one.
A timeless classic for the ages

I’m gonna be a mountain man when I’m older. Always wanted to, always will. I’m only 15 now, but it’s been my dream all my life. Growing up in Texas, and being away from the mountains has only made my love for them stronger. I will always come back to them. I’ve taught myself to trap, tan fur, hunt, build. I will do anything to get there. I will work a decade until I can buy enough land to live and hunt on. I will be a mountain man. Someday.

Yeah, "Liver-Eatin" Johnson was a real hardcore man of men, Same stock as Bridger ans Glass, and the other stout and stoic men. The way he tracked down his wife's assailants and murderers, was awesome. Crows were enemies of a lot of tribes. It was great though, seeing the larger Crow man, who ran away from Johnson, after Jeremiah finds them all, and he runs into the snow singing his death song..Hoka-Hey.

I've watched the movie three times in the last month and I only now tear up when connecting this to the true story, that after years of revenge and resentments and battle he finally has a crow Indian make peace. Call a truce. He fought for his wife and childs memory for so long and he fibally decides to lay it to rest with a warrior he met years ago. No more battle. It's not a moment of happiness but a moment of honor. Somthing so primal it's almost lost.
