Ralph said it after the race - "when they started here 20 years ago, most of the racers didn't even finish" which is clearly a hint for how fucking hard was the race in original Mafia.
When it comes to the race, your best bet to beating it is to turn on the speed limiter on the turns. It slows you down without braking so it is much harder to spinout.

The race is a cake walk compared to the later, Morelo in a plane mission. When racing, downshift (if in manual mode) and/or tap the circle ⭕️ (handbrake) on corners. Every car reacts different to handbraking, but it helps immensely going around corners in general.
Oh yeah I know exactly which mission you're talking about I remember the first week this game is out I raged so damn hard on that mission I honestly thought there was something wrong with my controller. Or that I accidentally turned off automatic transmission.
Loving this game. Can’t wait for Mafia IV. Hangar 13 seems to be improving. They just need to get character movement down. Tommy controls a bit choppy.
@@dauphongii They added it to use it for tuning cars, guns, clothes, good etc. Some of these could be robbed but some of them couldn't. It was fun. Why leave it out?
Right?! It's like a combination of Monza w/ the GP/oval configuration and classic Spa Francorchamps w/ the Masta kink. You just need to drive aggressive up front and then run a good line to stay ahead.
Fifth try for me though. Took me that much to get used to the car's handling. You just have to manage your throttle, while trying to brake as little as possible in certain areas of the track, and you'll eventually end up P1 in the second lap. And honestly, the cars are pretty easy to handle on CLASSIC...
Tip for the race, on the first corner go through the hay. If you hold left, with minor corrections, tommy will drift over the grass and get to the other side. It’s not quicker but it is more reliable. Also don’t break in the corner as the car won’t turn. Break before the corner then let go of both break and accelerator while you turn, get to the angle you want and accelerate again.
Another tip for beating the race on classic mode is to use the ram button to turn corners. (X on Ps4 or A on Xbox) The chances of you spinning out while using the ram button to turn corners is very unlikely compared to turning normally. You can aslo use the ram button to speed boost by pressing it rapidly and not turning the analog stick.
Aidan Austin - they’re ok, I am guessing you got the trilogy just like I did and want to find out what they are like, I will admit after playing mafia definitive edition I was hit hard with the change in mafia 2, but it is bare able and the story makes up for the graphics. I am yet to play mafia 3 but by videos I have seen on it it isn’t a lot of difference in graphics compared to the new mafia.
finished it like 10 minutes ago. It was good. I think I never finished story of the original one or it was so long ago that I do not remember. Really loved the remake. In the age where most of the games are open world and filled with a bunch of boring and repetitive side quest this was something refreshing.
Race tips: Don't try to go fast on the turns, brake before and accelerate out. Take the inside line and stay in control. Stay in 2nd gear unless on straights. If you are wheel spinning, let off acceleration for a second to re-grip road (you risk spinning out otherwise)
Also game reviewers get what’s called “review copies” they play the game before everyone else so people know what they’re getting. It’s very common practice
They don't have other jobs. They aren't cooking at a fast food joint part time while doing this theres 100 Workable hours every two weeks. The jobs are split between staff
they do it on advance, this game is like 10 years old, they have the script way way back , and the footage is when devs send it for reviewing purposes like A WEEK before release
@@nondescripthandle212 Definitely not. The 1-star icon is a ticket. It's the same in the original game. You just pay minor traffic violations on the spot.
I 100% completed the original game including ‘that’ level and free ride extreme and it’s probably one of my greatest gaming achievements. I think the race level took me every evening for around a month to complete but at the time it just felt kind of realistic, not broken. Such a satisfying game to master and definitely one of my favourites of all time. I haven’t played the definitive edition but highly recommend the game in general!
I effectively use covering in classic mode, you just have to let them shoot their entire magazine and then shoot them when they're reloading or moving places
Oh God, the race 😱 - I'm one of those who played the very first version 20 years ago, where you really couldn't change anything about the difficulty. I seriously started crying 😭because I was constantly flying out of one curve or another or otherwise kicking myself out of the race. But I loved Mafia so much at the time that I still wanted to somehow pass the race so I could keep playing the game. My attempt to play the game now on "Classic" difficulty took me back to the old days - but I'm 20 years older now and I didn't want to start the race over and over again for more than 5 hours, so I gave up and lowered the difficulty for the race - it's good to have the option, and there really are more important achievements in life than playing through Mafia completely on "Classic". I was really pleased to see so much effort put into the better graphics, and a bit more depth to the story too ❤. It's a shame this isn't done on more games, there were some that deserved it.
Pro tip on Classic aswell: If you do a critical hit(as I call it) like the shotgun clip where the guy is so hurt he just stands there for a while. Or if you’re using a bolt action rifle, and you hit a guy, while he is staggered. Just switch to a pistol and finish him with one shot cause bolt action ammo is a lot harder to find.
"So we have a game series known for it's very engaging story..." "let's give players a prologue and then 9 15 minute missions that each take a bunch of generic radiant activities to unlock then the game's over" "great idea"
This sounds drastically different then what Jake described the game. He said no mini games, no open world elements etc... sounds like you explained that here a few times.
If you remember the before you buy, Jake baldino said there are things in free ride he rather leave as a surprise, so he tried to make it less spoiler as possible
During the race i hit someone which caused a chain reaction and made everyone crash. So i ended up only having to race 3 other racers. Ended up winning on my first try.
I finished it in my first try.The first 2 laps weren't so good, but on the third lap i managed to finish first,i played on simulation driving mode.I slowed down in corners. The race was way harder in the original (it had 5 laps, you landed upside down, you die,no flip vehicle mechanic,4 laps being first and the last one could fuck you up cuz you flipped and landed on your head).
@@AlexxWWE15 But in the original you could easily left the other racers behind. Here you can't. They Always only about 25 meters behind you. It gets you pretty nervous after a minute.
Also, set your transmission mode to Manual. This allows you to take advantage of the higher power bands by shifting later, and engine braking by downshifting before a turn.
I found the race ok, starting so far back you have to dive-bomb the field into Turn 1 (a la Forza), if you drive cleanly after that you should win. The bit I got stuck on in classic mode was the armored police vehicle, mission difficulty seemed really inconsistent overall.
Forza Horizon 4 on "Unbeatable" difficulty is harder than the racing mission in Mafia on "Classic" difficulty (to be clear "unbeatable" difficulty is still very well manageable). Exactly like you said, make sure to get as far ahead in the beginning and follow the racing line but also make sure to not hit the brakes too hard because that will make the wheels lock and make sure to slide the car as little as possible (aka oversteer). Just keep the car at speeds and steering angles where you find a balance between understeer and oversteer and of course as fast as possible within those boundaries.
I'm still on my first play through, an I always do my first run on "normal" difficulty. I have already found that I prefer simulation driving an police though, except for "THE RACE". For that, I switched off driving simulation mode, and it only took me three tries.
I preffer walking in any kind of a game that have some proper walk control. It´s kind of a relaxing joy. For example RDR2 has some good walking mechanic. :) You can check in my gameplays :)
The race, and just driving in general, can be made a lot easier by using the ramming mechanic. The ramming mechanic gives you a short boost in traction, and can be used nicely throughout sustained cornering.
Just bought the mafia trilogy for £12.50, never played them before and I've just completed the 1st game. Amazing story and characters! Cant wait for the next 2.

What I'm thinking is that "the race" was never really harder than a boss in like Dark souls would be today, and the truth is were we all just kids and really bad at games. I mean, you can finish it if you try many times, very much like Dark souls.
The race was actually really easy in classic even. The thing that made me rage quit was the car chase after the shoot out at the farm. There was just no way to shoot cars quicker than the trucks health going down. Had to put it on easy for that mission.
Being a big Sim guy, that race wasn't jack compared to other stuff I've done, apparently everyone hated that race but it was easier than the live assetto 1000hp drift events I compete in😂
As a Classic Difficulty player here some console tips: Pushing left stick while aiming will switch left to right toggle. Shotgun is your best friend, Running and blasting enemies with the tip above can a fast way to clear a area. Lastly the RAM ability and tapping your normal brake in a turn is better then using your hand brake! Best of luck, Honestly the race mission is possible on Classic if your dedicated to it!
After watching """calming""" driving through city video, I have successfully come to the conclusion that BY GOD ARE PEOPLE BAD AT DRIVING IN VIDEO GAMES. I mean it's horrible, they never ease into the joystick, just immediately push it all the way to the left or right. When I play Mafia, I have the brake barely pressed while driving. I can do car pans and cinematic shots while driving no problem, then I watch the videos and it's horrifying. Speeding like crazy too then getting confused why they won't stop or turn in time.
The race is actually pretty easy in the remake, compared to the original. I did it on the first try, with simulation driving, with zero issues. First few times I ran through the original Mafia, I did have to try a few times, but later on they released a patch which introduced a difficulty slider for the race. The original, before the patch, was a challenge, mostly because of the car handling. It slid out at the slightest provocation, meaning you needed to employ a very delicate touch. You didn't have much room for error at the hardest difficulty / before the patch, so a single mishap was often enough to lose the race. The race car handling is way too easy in the remake. Just keep the throttle pinned basically all the way through and profit.
The funny thing about "the race" is the fact that it becomes a little easier if you use the ram feature in the turnes. It pushes you in the way your front wheels are facing so you could go sideways if you're not careful. Basically just ram while turning and you'll see the difference in grip. (works on all cars, not bikes though)
You don't really have to go to free ride to get the secret cars. After the infamous race Lucas bertone will tell you to come and visit him sometimes, if you do, you can go there when you just have to drive somewhere without a time limit, you get 4 postcards instead of 5 but you can still go and find the cars. The 5th one unlocks when you beat the game.
I like how the race basically forces you to learn racing lines in order to pull it off successfully.

i mean, the game is a remake of another game made in early 2000's
🤣🤣what?
@@_UglyBarnacle ?
The race is a cake walk compared to the later, Morelo in a plane mission. When racing, downshift (if in manual mode) and/or tap the circle ⭕️ (handbrake) on corners. Every car reacts different to handbraking, but it helps immensely going around corners in general.
Oh yeah I know exactly which mission you're talking about I remember the first week this game is out I raged so damn hard on that mission I honestly thought there was something wrong with my controller. Or that I accidentally turned off automatic transmission.
Easy race.
Loving this game. Can’t wait for Mafia IV. Hangar 13 seems to be improving. They just need to get character movement down. Tommy controls a bit choppy.
I am also looking into Mafia 4
I can’t wait until mafia 4 is released
Mafia: oil crisis
Mafia 1 and 2 were remakes, Mafia 3 was Hangar13's attempt and, well, Mafia 3 is.... not great.

After I memorized the track which took me three times I've never lost the race. It was actually pretty simple and quite fun.
everyone: tHe rAcE iS sO hArD
me who’s been playing racing sims my whole life: first try
were you playing on classic?
Second time for me. Gran turismo veteran
Took me like 20 or 30 tries on hard mode with regular driving. I kept on crashing and messing up.
Got so good at doing "the race" in original mafia from practicing, can do it so easy now just by muscle memory lol.
The remake changed how the driving worked.
That trick saved me from checking in to a mental institution.
Yeah it can really help you from spinning out. I figured that on my 15th try
Figured this out in mafia 3 I was so fucking happy they put it in this one too
Your car and spin out if overusing the Ram button on a straight. Only use it going into corners on Classic.
Who's watching this after beating the game🙋
Literally completed everything all secret mission (men in black), all achievements the story on easy, normal and classic mode
@@joecronin982 dang bro. How up to date are the definitive editions of 2 and 3?
Aidan Austin - they’re ok, I am guessing you got the trilogy just like I did and want to find out what they are like, I will admit after playing mafia definitive edition I was hit hard with the change in mafia 2, but it is bare able and the story makes up for the graphics. I am yet to play mafia 3 but by videos I have seen on it it isn’t a lot of difference in graphics compared to the new mafia.
@@joecronin982 gotcha thanks
finished it like 10 minutes ago. It was good. I think I never finished story of the original one or it was so long ago that I do not remember. Really loved the remake. In the age where most of the games are open world and filled with a bunch of boring and repetitive side quest this was something refreshing.
Race tips:
Don't try to go fast on the turns, brake before and accelerate out.

Pro tip on Classic aswell:
If you do a critical hit(as I call it) like the shotgun clip where the guy is so hurt he just stands there for a while. Or if you’re using a bolt action rifle, and you hit a guy, while he is staggered. Just switch to a pistol and finish him with one shot cause bolt action ammo is a lot harder to find.
this is what mafia 3 should have been - looked like at least -
That's what happens when publisher doesn't force the studio to release the game unfinished.
"So we have a game series known for it's very engaging story..." "let's give players a prologue and then 9 15 minute missions that each take a bunch of generic radiant activities to unlock then the game's over" "great idea"

Protip for the Race on classic: use the ram button during turns to take them tighter and quicker. Try it out it worked well for me
Also, set your transmission mode to Manual. This allows you to take advantage of the higher power bands by shifting later, and engine braking by downshifting before a turn.
The race is FINE in Mafia, the cars handle like prewar cars. Just expect a LOT of understeer and follow the racing line.
ok big hero over here
I found the race ok, starting so far back you have to dive-bomb the field into Turn 1 (a la Forza), if you drive cleanly after that you should win. The bit I got stuck on in classic mode was the armored police vehicle, mission difficulty seemed really inconsistent overall.
its just all the gamers with no experience playing racing games who rant about the race. the track is actually very good.
Also, they are on period-correct tires. They're not radials, not even bias-ply. They'll slide all over the place, so slow down before turns.
I'm still on my first play through, an I always do my first run on "normal" difficulty. I have already found that I prefer simulation driving an police though, except for "THE RACE". For that, I switched off driving simulation mode, and it only took me three tries.

Falcon, the only reviewer that has never said anything negative about anything.

The race, and just driving in general, can be made a lot easier by using the ramming mechanic. The ramming mechanic gives you a short boost in traction, and can be used nicely throughout sustained cornering.

Then you need to learn how a car works :P
I just think people are bad drivers, I never had a problem with “The race” in the original. Haven’t tried the remake
Great commentary on this video guide 👏 😊
