  • @darkguild69
    @darkguild69 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    Premise was ok but overall the story ending made no sense. Why would the guy start crying and whining and run to an open Communications terminal and start begging the humans saying that they surrender. It was just previously established earlier in the story that the humans were there to help them so why are they surrendering? I can understand if the enemy ships were sending that message saying they surrendered but not their allies.

    • @SciFiStoryGuy
      @SciFiStoryGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The author has several stories about humans and their unreasonable weapons. So this new, bigger, more unreasonable gun triggered some kind of psychotic break.

    • @Mesterick
      @Mesterick ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The speaker broadcasted in the open on all available frequencies. Even if they weren't trying to tender their (fleet's) "surrender" they might have been hoping that either the human ship took it as a universal surrender or that the Teranians would get the clue and surrender as well. Also, when you're talking about a gun that (apparently) shot a massive chunk of metal at a high enough velocity that it created a micro black hole which caught up several of your (fleet's) ships a mental break of some sort, as @SciFiStoryGuy suggested, would probably be in order for many species. Ships were destroyed by the secondary effects of the weapon, and under normal circumstances a kinetic energy weapon should **not** have secondary effects like that.
      Realistically speaking, if someone flying a ship that outmasses every individual ship in your fleet (implied) and probably outmasses a significant percentage of your combined fleet (again, implied but also probable) rolls in, easily taps into your your secure and encrypted tactical data network without permission in seconds or less, and then proceeds to fire what amounts to a black hole cannon, what would you honestly do?

    • @_AcatHat
      @_AcatHat ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well it is established in the story that the weapon is ripping through the universe itself. The narrator realizes this his whole race realizes this.

      @@Mesterick mass x velocity = death soo yeah i understand that reaction, the best weapon for peace is the one you never have to fire, or in this case just test to see what happens.

    That is not how railgun (even large one) works in space. Anything milimeter away from the slugs path will stay undammaged. But yeah, still a good story.

    • @Sidheavonney
      @Sidheavonney ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think, that it was implied that the slug was fired at close to c and a spatial distortion wave was pushed out by it. The blue lines on the outside of the ship were massive electrical lines that dumped all of that energy into the plasma trail left by the slug and sounds like it acted like an EMP antenna. Of course, I didn't write it but that is how I would've explained it. /shrug.

    • @Mesterick
      @Mesterick ปีที่แล้ว +2

      With known materials, yes. If you fire a collapsed matter projectile at .999c then I suspect its interactions with the universe are likely going to be on the "strange" end of physics. The whole thing reads like it managed to use pure mass and velocity to brute force a singularity cannon instead of generating actual black holes.
      That slug is also going to have "energetic" reactions to anything it collides with. Under "normal" sci-fi circumstances it's not an issue, but if the projectile has a high enough energy state it's likely possible it could have an effect similar to fission/fusion turning otherwise "solid" matter into radiation. This applies to both the matter of the slug as well as the matter the slug hits. The energy "backscatter" wouldn't be perfectly spherical of course, and this story has a highly stressed and not necessarily properly trained observer "seeing" what sounds like a spherical, or at least radial, damage pattern, but with enough e=mc^2 behind the slug it could theoretically account for those secondary effects.
      Of course that's all ignoring the question of whether or not the cannon fired a single round or multiple rounds and whether or not the single round stayed intact if that's what it fired. While the damage pattern would have been conical rather than tubular the witness is unreliable at best, but it would still have accounted for the AoE effects and somehow managing to destroy "half" the Teranian fleet which, unless the shot were lined up explicitly to do so prior to the human ship exiting FTL, a tubular damage pattern probably wouldn't have achieved unless the Terranians were stupidly close together.

    • @Sidheavonney
      @Sidheavonney ปีที่แล้ว

      Nothing, no material could survive 0 to just shy of c over the course of a mile. That slug was just a mass of quantum particles. That would be about 30,570,276 Gs if you figure a 1 sec acceleration time. At one thousandth of a second (all guesses, I refuse to do the math for acceleration over distance) you get a G rating of 30,570,276,292. @@zeehero7280

    Klingon bird of prey, carries two BFG on itself.
    Federation ship saucer section has floor or celling particle accelerators circling around to pick speed up to c. before firing.
    You have increases cube effect and you have reduce cube effect.
    Such as 1 cubic centimeter of iron, cube down to 1/8th of a millimeter. A speck/mote of dust you need a magnifying glass to see it let alone to pick it up.
    Two sheets of notebook paper with fine tight crisp writing explaining the steps, with that mote of iron dust traveling at or just below c. impacts with 2 stander ton yield of TNT.
    On a square inch covering. 2tons are normal what is used to take out a tank. ST phaser turret projectors have a sq meter emitter face facing. base on FX and whatever the writer was directed for book/tv dialog, that is a lot of tonnage impacting on a sq meter area.
    Now the math of Star Trek photon torpedo shell casing weight traveling at c. would measure at over 1,000 megatons compare to the stander 3kilograms of A/Matter warheads.

      It reminds me of the time I sent an opossum to its final destination for trying to get into my chicken house. I have a 16 guage shotgun that was originally purchased by my grandfather sometime around 1910. I fired 1 shot from about 20 feet and went back into the house. My wife wanted me to make sure it wasn't suffering so I told her that he was definitely out of my misery. She insisted that I needed to make sure he was dead. I had to tell her that everything from his shoulders forward was gone. I didn't have to make sure he was dead. I still have that shotgun. At 20 feet it will put a 6 inch hole through a target and pretty much shred everything that's within a couple inches around the hole. That's what they were making 114 years ago. They don't make them like they used to.
