Both sides committed atrocities but overall now the country has morphed into a capitalistic society that the communists fought so hard against. The "genuine evil" was and remains with the Vietnamese Communist Party and its sympathizers both in Indochina and the West. with particular emphasis on their capacity for propaganda and mass deceit. Madame Nhu was outspoken and made embarrassing and inappropriate statements, but she was correct in her analysis of the so called "Buddhist Crisis". Contrary to oft-repeated Communist and pro-Communist propaganda and general historical ignorance, the Diem regime did not persecute Buddhists; Buddhists served with loyalty in the military; Buddhists in general were NOT the majority religion in South Vietnam; the instigator of the so called "Buddhist" protests, Thich Tri Quang (secular name Pham Quang) was a long-time Communist sympathizer and activist; his militant followers were infiltrated by Communist agents (hence the phenomenon of so called "Buddhist" monks whose shaven heads were whiter than their faces); and the verdict of UN inquiry into alleged religious persecution in South Vietnam cleared President Diem of wrongdoing. If you wish to attribute "repression," "terror" and "genuine evil" at work in South Vietnam, then it is the Vietnamese Communist Party and their supporters who should be top of the list, not Madame Nhu and her insensitive remarks. She was not the one who told gullible monks a pack of lies and then sent them out to commit assisted suicide and burn themselves to death in time for the six o'clock news. All of this is a matter of historical observation and record (from the findings of the UN inquiry itself to the experiences of journalists worthy of the name), but it is buried under decades of repeated lies, distortions and foolish, false assumptions.
When a buddhist monk commited ritual suicide by burning himself, she was daredevil enough to say : Barbecue!!.The fate of South Vietnam was sealed with such an attitude.
She's a cunning and evil woman. Even her parents disowned her for her treatments towards Buddhists under the regime of President Diem.
