This was a great feature on John Deere tractors, had just enough pull to get you in the mud, than hit the relief and quit pulling leaving you stuck far worse than if you didn't have it.
Yes, the worst thing JD ever sold... My neighbour had a 3130 with HFWD... It was gutless, and wouldnt spin the front wheels when the tractor was allmost stuck when pulling a 12 ton maize trailer: Result was that the oil allmost cooked. He did one load and then swapped tractors with his Ursus 904 to finish the harvest.
Had 3 of these, 4040, 4440 and a 4640, they worked great on our 250 acre spud farm.

my dad used 2 tractors for 33 years changed a few hoses and module that controls the 4x4
well it just isnt for having it on all the time just if you hit a tough spot while ploughing or just anytime of groundwork

From what I remember, when you turned on the 4wd 30 horses immediately died, I think after these models jd went with mechanical 4wd.

I've had a sense that this a bad idea on a tractor.
