I’m 76 years old and remember Jim Bouton when he was a star pitcher with the Yankees in the early 60’s. He always took the time to sign autographs and converse with the fans outside Yankee Stadium. All around good guy. I was glad the Yankees brought him back for old timers day before he died.
"Contact ballet". 😂😂😂 Thank you for this. I'm not a big baseball fan, but saw Bouton interviewed on a 1977 "Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" tonight. He was certainly a philosophical poetic type. Then there's that knuckleball. Bonus in this clip is Pete Rose. Diving into that time and those two greats in a sport that generally holds little interest for me really was an unexpectedly profound experience. Thank you for making it possible.

Talk shows from back then seem so much more thoughtful and genuine.
Amazing interview with two guys who impacted the landscape of the game!
Wow. And Rose once hollered “Fuck You, Shakespeare” at Bouton. He was very gracious.

Jim Bouton truly loved baseball. Baseball treated him poorly.
Seems like Jim is giving Pete the cold shoulder, and Pete is at least trying to make chit chat with him.
