    I was the guy with the black dog that lived in victory square for 3 months back in 2016 . I didn’t know a soul in Vancouver at that time , I ended up homeless because I travelled all they way there for a job that didn’t pan out and left me homeless. It was both the worst and best time of my life . I met the most amazing people . I was never in any real danger , although I was right smack in the middle of it all , I managed to get myself off the streets . But my first night in Vancouver, was heart breaking to say the least . Never in my life did I see so many broken people I cried for two days straight. Asking the creator, what’s my purpose here . The answer was , I neede to lift up my broken family . And the only way I knew how was with my music , so I bought a guitar for 20 bucks of some guy selling stuff at the market and started playing . I didn’t play for money and if someone tried to give me money I would tell them I just need food . And I played every night in victory square. God bless all of you out there struggling . I’m here to say that not everyone homeless is an addict . I mean I slow my weed but that was it . But an addict I was not , am not and will not no matter how bad shit gets . I have been back in Alberta since 2017 and have been at the same job since then . Thank you Vancity I LOVE YOU ALL . Although I was homeless living in a tent , I was more at peace with myself then I ever was , up to that point in my life .. and yes I will be back but this time I won’t be homeless but I will be right there with and for you . God told me my job is to help the helpless . #iloveyouvancity

      They do infact choose to live like this. There's so many free programs for these people to get clean on taxpayer dollars, on top of that they get a little over $800 a month to aid them, which they choose to spend on their next drug fix, which is also taxpayer dollars. What bugs me is that people want us to do more for them, give them more money, but right now, they already make more that full time, minimum wage 9-5 worker.. it's absolutely ridiculous

    • @joeywheeler3838
      @joeywheeler3838 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AliceSinclair98 also what's ridiculous is that a large amount of our work force in this nation still qualifies for government assistance of the basis that the job doesn't pay them enough to properly live. You have to take into account that a lot of places straight up won't give you good hours or will just hire people for two and a half months then let them go.
      Conceptualize a wal mart opening in your town, destroying many small businesses and taking away niches for sales and then additionally hiring the bare minimum people at the bare minimum hours. Does that seem like a good idea to you?

      They aren't needy, they are want-y. They want drugs & have sold their souls & destroyed their families & are now homeless.

They have shut down a lot of SRO's and encampments at the parks. They just keep trying to move these people away but it doesn't look like they are going anywhere. Everyone deserves to have a place to live. The rents have increased so much that I really think we are going to continue to see more homeless people. The rich are getting richer and more people will be displaced.

      I'm from Vancouver so I can shed some light on it. E. Hastings is a mix of mentally ill, addicts, runaways and homeless from colder parts of
      Canada who came here because the weather isn't as harsh. It's got a mini economy as well. It's not dangerous in the way America is dangerous. I've walked through at 3 sometimes 4 in the morning and never felt like I was in danger.
      I've even sat down and chatted with some of the street residents late at night over a beer or two. And yes, if you ask around you can definitely get your hands on whatever you're looking for..... drugs or sex. There's also community outreach and we built community gardens that the residents tend to themselves. You won't get that by just looking at the walking tour. Don't get me wrong though, for the street residents in the sex and drug trade, yes it can be downright dangerous for them.
      It's a tough city from a housing standpoint because it's the only location in all of Canada with such a mild climate and ease of access to both the ocean and the mountains. Real estate is at a premium that's for sure.
      And finally, there's a good portion of the homeless that prefer to live on the streets. I know it sounds ass backwards, but it's true. The responsibilities for rent, utilities, taxes... etc are facets of life that they simply don't want. And, believe it or not, alot of the street residents have their network of friends that they share close bonds with. So they won't leave the streets anyway.

The decriminalization of drugs has caused a drug war and drug dealers to claim certain territory and sell their drugs and one of the District attorneys fought to get prisoners in jail for drug charges released from prison causing homeless to increase by 300% in San Francisco and make it much more violent because the drug users are also violent offenders. BC is crazy to follow in the same steps knowing damn well what’ll happen. Addicts need rehab not enabling.

    Here's the thing though? As an American tourist having grown up in Las Vegas and living in Phoenix az. I still didn't think it was that bad here when I visited a year ago. You guys have time to fix your problems and (maybe my standards are just fucking low) I was blown away by how kind the city was. And the overall beauty of the town. That doesn't mean don't care by all means you guys have a nack for the details. Just don't be so hard on yourself

    I'm shocked! I'm dreaming to be in Canada because they promote it as one of the best countries to live! And walla! This is unbelievable! Now I say, Dubai is way better than Canada! I'm still surprised! Really!

      bahaha Dubai is better than Canada? you have lost common sense. Dubai is expensive as all fuck and doesn't have 1/10th of our infastructure. Plus half the projects are borderline pipe dreams. Balanced on the head of a needle I say.
      our issue is that the safe supply/harm reduction experiment has clearly failed and we now need to change it up. that money should be spent on the cities not just it's addicts.
