If there was ever an award for “best placeholder ever”, it would go to BC Huffy. For anyone not wanting to spend the money on the “upgrade” so to speak, this figure is still very much a great G1 representation of this character. Plus, this is why the BC was selling for 3X it’s release price a year ago. Also props to BC for rereleasing this thing at its original retail release price. Maybe they should get an honorary point for that?
I can't believe Bad Cube won the transformation category... In my humble opinion that FT transformation is a thing of pure genius! But I liked your explanation of why: FT's smoother alt mode (plus the wheels are fully hidden in bot mode). Still, one of the coolest FT transformations I have seen in a while, perhaps ever. I almost bought the BC because of the shoulders, but ended up going with FT. I've never regretted a Fans Toys purchase. Thanks as always! Take care everyone!
The G1 cartoon really is the best commercial of all time. Still selling expensive toys 38 years later. Even of characters nobody really loves like huffer.
Though I'm not a fan of the super-cartoony designs, I like the weird shoulders on Huffer. I do feel like FansToys missed a trick on the shoulders - have the little blue cube parts move as part of the shoulders - sort of an accordion movement - which would help hide the joints. I prefer the FansToys version over the BadCube version overall, but it could have been a little more detailed for my preference (such as the details around the sides and back of Huff's legs), and it wouldn't kill FansToys to put more articulation on their figures, especially with the recent price hikes.
I dunno Bobby The Bad Cube didn't have a chance against Fanstoys. I dunno its a fair comparison from the beginning because a rerun toy at 64.00 compare to a 130.00 toy. The 65.00 additional cost should be better. I get why we are comparing but at this point we comparing a Mazda CX 5 to a BMW X series two different categories. Good review Bobby!
Nice comparison. I feel FT went the extra mile with Rig. The paint apps look so stunning, and I haven't seen paint that wowed me like that since Quietus. The alt mode look phenomenal, and getting the transformation to make a clean looking bot from all sides is a feat. And they gave it that G1 cartoon accuracy with the arms. There is something likeable about the BC Huffer. No doubt. It looks great, and I think the color choices actually look better on it. It's more brighter and adds some contrast on the main body. Regardless, both figures look fun to pick up and play with, but display wise I have to hand it to Rig.
Great video. One thing I would like to see at the end of something like this is how each of them looks in your display. Thank you for all the wonderful reviews and comparisons. I enjoy watching your channel.
Yes. I still really like the Alt mode of the Huff 1.0 myself. Too bad it wasn't build like Huff 2.0 as this would have been a different comparison to Rig. I loved the gimmick with the headlights on the Huff 1.0 always thought that was a neat trick.
I want to see that comparison too and I'm buying both but proportion wise from what I've seen so far FT bot mode is way better. It's going to be a close call but I still haven handled either so I just don't know.
Very helpful review! Both figures do a really good job. I go for G1 toon accuracy in my collection as that’s what I grew up with so happy I chose FT Rig :)
It's kind of weird comparing these, especially from the front. The FT looks exactly what huffer looks like. But the badcube looks better, specifically because it allowed itself to update the design. Arguably they're going for different things just as much as those two tape sets. Do you want an updated, asthetically improved design? Badcube. Do you want it to look like what huffer looks like, with all the weird, dumpy, awkwardness that implies? FT.
I understand were you're coming from and I agree that Bad Cube may have tried to change the look a bit but I don't agree that the Bad Cube one looks better or that it's the same thing regarding the comparison as it was with the cassettes. If one company was trying to go for the toy look and the other for the cartoon look or for a completely new and different stylized interpretation like Cang Toys are doing with their Predaking I would be agreeing with you. This doesn't seem to be either one of those cases it's just a subtle change in aesthetics but the main references are all there and I believe they're competing for the exact same spot. This is just my personal opinion, please don't take it the wrong way.
Fanstoys pipes will be a 100% new mold. No repaint on this one. The only engineering they might share is where the front wheels tuck away. Not really sure about that one.
Great video. It is entirely subjective but I just can't get past those shoulders on the FT. I reckon that sometimes 'toon' accuracy just doesn't translate well into physical models / action figures.
I kinda wonder if your wife is a secret defander. Some times in these vs I feel like she's trying to guess which one is the fanstoys. It seems like she gives a chuckle like, yup there's the fanstoys winning presence and just feels better too.
Seemed like an accurate assessment to me. If Fans Toys were to up their articulation game, while keeping their paint and sculpts intact, they'd be unstoppable, IMO.
I never thought so until seeing it next to the FT, but now I think the BC has long monkey arms - in comparison to the FT anyway. The face sculpt and the overall finish makes me very glad I kept the order for Rig and canceled Huff.
I'd go with the BC. Huffer's one of those designs from the cartoon that just doesn't work as a 1/1 translation in plastic form for me, and FT went full cartoon.
I enjoy both offerings and usually do when a new piece gets added to the collection. I rarely sell anything anymore and just separate them and have different displays. I have however thought about selling older stuff again just because so damn much has come out and is still coming out that I can barely afford to keep up. Great video as usual man.
Very fair review. With a four year headstart on this figure BadCube really did well. I would expect for the price FansToys wants and for the extra time to release this they could have done a bit more with the articulation. I really wish they included the toy head (with a bit of a modern twist) because I prefer the toy face to the cartoon one. If only X-Transbots was releasing this near the same time I bet FansToys would have added more articulation and an extra accessory or two.
If you look at Fanstoys Brawn, Seaspray and Beachcomber the transformations are downright SIMPLE. Not just simple compared to other Fanstoys figures, but simple. Huffer seems a lot more complicated and for little purpose. The robot mode is fine, the truck mode is fine, but it just seems like a lot of complication just to get to "fine."
You have to ask yourself whether or not cartoon accurate bot modes are what you're looking for, if so then Fanstoys cannot be beaten. If something else is your goal, then it gets harder to compare. I personally don't care if a bot can do a handstand or other ridiculous poses because they won't be doing that on shelf. Sculpt and presence are most important.
Tbh I’d rather have a beautiful/accurate looking figure, one that’s solid and as long as it’s able to pull off standard action poses, I would be okay with the basic level of articulation especially for the size
For presence I'm going to totally disagree and go with the toaster - one, its bigger, heavier and makes a real statement in the kitchen. Two, it toasts a variety of things, mostly carbohydrates (so to speak) and provides a valuable service to my family. Also, it's a lot less whiny than the titular Huffer.
Good review. I actually really like the FT version. I think BC is more for the People who want a representation, but not Cartoon Accuracy. I am in the super majority that I really liked their Cubex Huff 1.0 that got them into the game in the first place, but it was not a very good build. They had so many gimmicks and great transformation versus the XTB Krank, that I can't understand how people liked the XTB version better. If they would have made that figure the way they made their Huff 2.0 and had a better trailer attachment, it would have been the definitive stylized version of Huffer. I really think that FT needs to step up the articulation on their figures if they want to compete. I hear people who are big fans and buy all the FT stuff starting to grumble about no update on the 2 combiners and now they show 6 new preorders and not a peep of an update and people are still gobbling up their figures. If their figures don't start stepping up and XTB hits their stride they'll find themselves losing their marketshare and give themselves a bad rep. I hope we hear something soon about the Combiners. I have a feeling their is a SDS on that coming on that topic. Look forward to seeing what you have in the works. Take care!
First off great video, but i would like to address the proportions. Plain simple it's the shoulder joint location, one is toon accurate the other is human body accurate. But if you move the Fans Toys shoulders up to were it meets or levels with the collar of Huffer then Fan Toys takes it hands down. Now it also comes to how you want it to look, humanoid or robotic, it's up to the fans. I for have also thought that the design was off, but as kid said that he has pistons that gave him extra strength so that how i justified his design. all this being said Fans Toys for me
While my tastes differ on some of the subjective results, I don't think many people can argue with the overall score. I almost kept my Bad Cube, but the cartoon accuracy of the Fans Toys got me to buy it. I think I'm gonna keep my Bad Cube for alt mode because I don't like the amount of blue showing through on the back of the FT, but I've gotta do closer comparisons to the animation in alt mode.
FT is my fav 3rd party company but I can already tell it's going to be stiff & lifeless. Thts my guess. They are getting behind in terms of looking/feeling alive.
This was a tough decision for me. I actually ordered the Badcube, becuase of the wonky shoulders. But, after seeing everyones pics once it came out, the FT grew on me. It does look more like the goofy Huffer from the cartoon. If the head sculpt on Badcubes Huff was accurate, I probably would have stuck with it, but I ended up with a last mibute order for Rig, from a super fair site that still had 24 available. Cost me $102 after shipping fees. Now I'm gonna have a BadCube Huff to sell once they both show up. (Paid $66 and change for that one. Oh well. Should be able to make my money back on eBay. Hate to sell such a nice figure, but I don't have the resources to buy multiples of the same character. I can't even afford to get all of the characters. Not by a long shot.)
In my opinion FT wins the overall paint and sculpt category by 8 to 0. We think differently about the transformation because for me it's not only about being smooth, easy, intuitive, fun and enjoyable but about the end result which in my opinion is the main objective of every transformation. Being that I think Fans Toys achieved a better look in both modes with a more involved but still smooth, easy, fun and enjoyable transformation they win that category with no contest from Bad Cube. Other then that I agree with your assessment even though the end result for me is 9 to 3 with tie in two categories. I'm not saying Bad Cube Huff is a bad TF action figure but if it was the only representation for this character I would end up skipping it. Please understand that this is my completely subjective opinion nothing else. Thanks for your comparison Mr. Skullface. P.S. I've been complaining about Fans Toys articulation since they decided to increase their price point and reduce the articulation points and range, I still think they are the best but they could be so much more.
So tesla 2.0 is on soon release now 😅 one fast transformer slow Motion up ( look rl nice) but this waist just bait me out 👿 i’m ok with no butterfly joint if look beter for me but plus no waist is too much for me if Xbot look good too. It is far from ideal, but FT did show Tesla 2.0 has waist rotation. The red piece that blocks it flips up to allow it. However what they have shown is limited and it is unknown if the piece flips up enough for more rotation or not. But it isn't "no waist".

Agreed. Badcube Huffer, pipes, side swipe, and red alert are the best versions until they get beaten out like ft did here with rig.

Gotta drop by Agabyss this week to pick up my Rig. I'm not sure how I feel about his shoulders just yet but he does look fantastic

I can't wait to see Janssen vs. Tesla 2.0. That might be the tightest vs. ever...at least going back to Gabriel vs. Terminus Giganticus.

If we're being honest. MP-10-20 are too short for sure. They just recolored the figure before they settled their scale.🤷🏻♂️
