Hi. I'm a researcher from Brazil. I believe that diseases related to excessive repeats of the CAG triplet, can be treated with inhibitors of the enzyme methyltransferase. Let me explain my hypothesis: the methylation of cytosines in CAG codons, followed by a spontaneous deamination of said cytosine, will cause it to be transformed into the nitrogenous base thymine. Therefore, a CAG codon will become a TAG codon, TAG is one of the three possible stop codons. This inadvertent stop in the protein synthesis, explains truncated proteins, probably forming nucleus signal sequences of amino acids so that the truncated proteins get into the cell nucleus in neurons, causing damage.
