Also, the Miata world is so wide and vast (the creation of the car, it's racing pedigree, the evolution over the generations, and the tuning scene with turbos and v6s and v8s and kswaps - just to name a few). No pressure Jason, but this better be good :)

Couldn’t be more than like… $10k, right? Somebody want to start the GoFundMe?
I almost never comment on youtube, but just wanted to say thank you guys for doing this, I look forward to it every (well, every-ish) Monday. Congrats on 100 episodes and heres to the next 100!
Sorry about sending the Rover (lol), but I knew you guys would be interested in it. If it's survived this long then it should survive the drive. But also... CONGRATULATIONS ON 100 EPISODES!
You guys should have Hagerty sponsor your trip to Canada to get the SD-1, take a film crew and a chase vehicle, and do a Roadkill like episode driving the car back to California.
Cheers for holding out until a proper Piech episode. Translating the book will take time. Duct tape two i-phones to the dash of the Rover and film a Carmudgeon show during the trip.Discovery came with a 5-speed. And Derek got $7,250.
Congratulations on 100 episodes! Discovered you guys in my first lockdown in 2020, survived my second lockdown in 2022 thanks to you guys . And you are like having an online digital car club chat while walking around, thanks for bringing meandering insightful car chat to the masses Also thanks to Jasons various Hagerty videos I track the Lucid brand, bought the hot wheels and share the videos of them as often as possible...heard of their recent issues and injection of more investment from main backers and possible move into the CN market... I can only think back to the episode where Jason told them you've beaten Elon now go make that SUV so the company survives, I really hope they do make it .. and one day can maybe consider "Lucid swapping" one of my classics.
Is there any chance of a meetup somewhere in "moderately deep Canada" on your trip back home with the SD1!? Surely I can't be the only Canadian fan who'd love to meet the Carmudgeons and set eyes on their latest automotive inamorata :)
ONE OH OH, HERE WE GO Congrats on the milestone and the hours of f*ckery you've given us, here's to another 100 to come Whhiiich is about (probably) when the real Piechisode will please stand up 😁😁
wheres that video where the white guy here was explaining the laws that were suppsoedly made to lower emissions , but they are obviosuly really bad at that (probably because the people who pased the law dont actually care). for example, porsche used a bigger engine which made emissions worse , vs using smaller engine, becaue law has strict requirements per engine displacement or something like that, so th ebiiger engien passed the test better than the smaller one. another part was how dumb it was to adjust requirements based on vehical length and width, bu ti fi rerember right, they didnt tax height. they also gave SUV cars less requirement in how much it needs to be safe from rolling onto its side, compared to standard put on sedans, same with emissions. my idea; hybrid reduces emissions more than ev, it uses the worlds limited batttery supply, to reduce emissions where they happen most across all cars throught the rest of human existence, which is in low speed high torque ( stop and go traffic) without being heavy (which is less crash safe espcially for others in crash, and weight also worsens normal wear damage to road which cost emissions etc to fix). a small but essential part of the battery cannot be recycled after short lifetime due to high energy flow into and out of battery causing normal dendrite forming battery wear damage, this is why aftermarket electric cars go down in value as much as they do. see volvo study on how it suppsoedly takes more emissiosn to make electric car. mahle says its working on recyclable electric motor. its best to have small combustion charge battery size somewhat closer to optimal size for longveity , because more battery is exponentially more energy wasted which worsens longveity, ebcause yoru nto using all thee energy all that long range ev big battery mass carries, and current ev tech is much heavier per amount fo energy vs combustion. sir joseph center enegry and others are working on converting linear combustion energy to elctric drive , and maybe assited by hydrallic drive. bio fuels, hydrogen , e fuels, propane etc are all more sustainable tech than relying more on electric battery car, so only use enough battery to reduce emisions to a resonable amount for the sake of human health etc. it will more much easier to own too, cheaper, lightweight driving fun more similar to lotus exige mid rear engine weigth distrubution(for saftey and being abel to preserve momentum around turns, which is more effceint than regenrative braking), manual steering, a car structure that can give you precise feel of how car is moving , rear wheel drive (less regenerative braking , so more longveity of battery) etc. the seats can move so that when getting out of car, person is sitting straight up with no leaning back at all, to allow more space for legs to come out , and to go back into car when needed, while allowing smaller car electric car batteries of today and the past have not and will probably not be recycled if they arnt freshly dead when 100 percent full mass recycling that is also not too chemically toxic, becomes a real thing.... the batteries end up rusting and short circuiting at landfills . less weight per structural strength and crash energy absorbing material, is more safe, including saftey to those outside the car, while also reducing normal wear damage done to roads, which requires resource use, money, emissions etc to fix.. less weight also means leass possibly endrocrine disruptor microplastic dust and brakedust from tire wear, pushing less power at a given moment also helps. compact 4 seater with the rear seast facing rear (i cant explain too much it wont let me, but think of sports cars, access to rear seats, less space to heat or cool, aptera motors, etc) . the seats can move so that when getting out of car, person is sitting straight up with no leaning back at all, to allow more space for legs to come out , and to go back into car when needed, while allowing smaller car . people can take multiple trips to doctor insetad of taking whole family at once (they probabyl would have to for doctor office schedualing reasons anyway), and family road trips can be had in rented vans for the few times itll ever happen . even gordon murray t27 or aptera or cree sam sort of cars, could be resonale for the increasingly mentally ill culture of decreasing long term collaborative relationships , so less need to carry much people in car. making the car move up to height of a car its about to crash into , to protect its weaker parts from the structurally stronger parts of the other car, is possible by a explosive device creating ablity to move quick enough, while having a locking device to hold it in place. even better, if it somehow is integrated with a system that can increase height to make it easier for disabled user to put stuff (including herself) into or out of car , by less user joint and muscle movement. system would also allow light offroading. toyota active sway bar sort of ting could allow less stiff bumpy ride in straight line , but allow it around turns to be able to preserve more momentum around turns, to whatever extent user wants. this can also allow car to move itself at angle that absorbs crash in safest way, as audi a8 already does. FRIC suspension, as in mclaren f1. this advanced suspension ideally should be a optional thing that can be fairly easily added at dealership if user sells car to someone else and the new owner is willin gto pay for it, instead of selling new car. theoretically, to rent instead of sell the car with software to reduce monthly costs if driving in a low fuel, tire etc consumption way, can make it easier to maek high quality high budget build which makes car last as long as possible, but there would need to be legal protection against updated blagrock ESG score rules from making service provider say "were taking away the car , certain softwares in it, etc because spywaredetected you did something zatanworldorder doesnt like" .youtube channels: tony heller, suspicious observers, tom nelson, corbettreport at substack webzite , blackrogg clmate policy, dysgenic"affirmatiev action" poliyc, see ulez road use tax, general tax on productivity and independnece such as destruction of nuclear energy, etc
Request for future: Was thankful for you guys finally explaining the whole dog leg thing for us folks that didn't know, could you do a steering box episode/explination as well? Thanks
Rover-fetch trip = an epic crossover opportunity with 1-2 Roadkill crew. Congrats on your first 100 episodes - may there be many hundreds more! (Also, can't wait to see the Revelations on Miatas - cover spiritual ancestors incl the OG Elan, OEM, "OEM+" tweaks, K-swaps, and contemporaries like S2000, predictions of where roadsters will evolve...)
I'm so happy to hear that there are enough Über car nerds out there viewing or listening to this to keep Hagerty happy and keep The Carmudgeon Show going! It has become a ritual of my early-week routine.
Holy fucking shit, I live in Edmonton and cannot believe that you two bought that Rover! I was drooling over that ad as I am also a freak who loves sd1's. You guys should try to organize a meet n greet or something when you come to get it, not sure how many fans you have here but I will at least show up with my Volvo LOL.
I could probably listen to you two talk about cars a lot longer than an hour btw also can we get singing Jason back? I miss him and his musical references 😢
Please do an episode on all the experiences you had with your friend. It would be awesome to hear and be a great tribute to your him. On another note the Pontiac endurance test is hands down the funniest story to be told on here. I’ve been around since episode one was released and am so excited so see it keep going. Truly makes my Monday when I see it pop up after I get off of work.
Keep up with the podcast. I literally stopped listening to music in my upgraded audio system to listen to these podcasts every morning (got some backtracking to do) starting at 4:30 AM PST.
I ordered my 2017 VW Golf SportCombi 1,4 TSI 150 GT R-Line 6-speed with a factory-installed Webasto standheizung which can be controlled and programmed using an app. Best accessory ever! It is much appreciated here in Stockholm, but we don’t use the German name for it here because in Swedish that word sounds like ”erection heater”, which is NOT a commonly available factory option from any car manufacturer, even if the Sultan of Brunei gets a special deal on them for his custom Ferraris.
JRG ... that's richer than old man tan! Coincidentally, it was a smoke silver 420 w140 that started my Benz buying and carbating for the right one. I am still trolling for a 420 w140, lwb. My Webasto keeps my truck warm in sub zero weather. Basically, there is a fan similar to a turbo. One side circulates air in cabin. The other side is forced induction for burn chamber. An injector pulses into a burner that has something like a bit of coarse brillo pad. Since mine is diesel, I have to take it apart every 2nd or 3rd winter to clean soot out if internal fins in chamber. 1 gallon of fuel every 20 hours vs idling engine at .8g/hrs. With 4 AGM batteries, I have plenty of power to start 13L inline 6. I just have to remember to shut it off 15 minutes before releasing brakes so it can cycle down. Otherwise it will soot up MUCH faster and fail to start (think of 97 tdi intake soot buildup.) How could I find out when you decide the S420 needs a new home?
Totally understand the "Panasonic" reference, same camp. Love the "Canadian Tire" Air Canada reference. Great show. Pls film/share the road trip. Wow E39 530i for the 🍋 s, it's too nice, nooo, that had the best steering for E39. This was probably one of my fav episode, laughed thru it all. The mini furnace is a very normal thing in europe. It is just an open flame underneath a small chamber with coolant. It sounds like a little turbine. best podcast ever
Congrat on your 100th Bday! Yours and Lemans coming at nearly the same time! Nice, w124 wagon as well. I’ve got a 230TE 124 wagon that I’m planning a 2.3 16v swap into. My friend has a low mile one sitting in a container. It’s an auto but I’ll he has a 6 speed hopefully I will swap into it at a future date.
ABC debuted with the W220 and its level of complexity is beyond that of ADS. While ADS is linked hydraulic shocks with adjustable valving and the ability to control height, ABC replaces basically the entire suspension with massive hydraulic pistons that are all individually controlled by fairly advanced computer systems.
AAA policy works in Canada. vice versa my BCAA 320km towing policy works in USA. very handy when I go down to track days in Washington state from Vancouver Canada.
Havent done enough research for the piechisode? Since when do you do any research for this show😂 But seriously, i love the show been watching since the start always entertaining
Saw a rover 3500 in Daly city Home Depot parking lot over the weekend. A 90 year old looking man was driving it, you could not tell it was a V8 by listening to it.
You missed taking your rover to the Edmonton British car show since it was this past weekend. Maybe when you go to Edmonton could do a episode with a live audience.
rover sdi road trip!!!! please it would be absolute gold. TVR spec engine swap? The guy who did the engine did the metro engine and worked for jordon f1. I can't remember his son's name it was 30 years ago.
AAA and CAA are affiliates so you can get your benefits up here. Shouldn't be an issue if you need a tow. By the way, that Rover is up in my neck of the woods. Enjoy the trip to Alberta!
you have to go to edmonton? yeeesh Signed - Calgarian Also if you go pick it up in early july you can go to the calgary stampede, i want to see hyphen in full cowboy regalia
I haven't watched yet (will later) but I have a question for you two, and people with experience in the comments. I have track experience now driving both RWD and AWD car. Recently I rode as a passenger with a good driver in a FWD car and the different approach to corners was fascinating. So the question. If you were to buy a cheap FWD car for track. What would you choose? Let's say ideally $10k or less for the car and $5k for track prep. Expect it to get beat on.
92-99 honda civic, 94-01 Acura Integra, any trim works, just depends on how much power you want. They are extremely simple, have one of the largest aftermarket in automotive world, are extremely developed as platforms, are cheap to run, buy and operate and come with double wishbone suspension AND honda shifters are great. Also, everything about these cars is known, so there is not a single issue that cannot be solved.
I'm surprised no one has come up with an electric auxiliary heater to use in lieu of remote start. I'm guessing this is because the remote-start feature has no bearing on EPA testing.
Yes, you have plug in electric block heaters from Defa and Eberspächer. This is a pump, water heater and an ECU that talks to the Bosch ECU. So once it gets to 65°C it opens the flap for the HVAC and pumps the water around the block and cabin running the fans. But you need a domestic plug for your car, these have been around since the 60's here in Scandinavia. The stand alone ones work the same way but use petrol or diesel and now come with a Cat
Fun fact: the heater is literally called "Webasto" in Poland. I lived a huge chunk of my life thinking that means something in some other language before finding out it's a company name.
Panasonic & Technics were same company. One of my first jobs was to work as hifi mechanic for both back in 1998-2000ish. Panasonic was equal in quality to Philips that was real german powerplayer those times.
Piëch is rolling in his grave
Hm... i mean his idea, the Bugatti Veyron didn't come with 1000 PS but with 1001.
So 100 wouldn't be his number, it would be "more" ;-)
Episode 407.2 maybe
It's going to be on his birthday or passing day ... Probably August or something
His well appointed, soft closing casket with highly polished overly complicated aluminium hinge mechanism 😂
Piëch posthumously invents the single underground cam?

Closer to 2042 (including some none posting holidays) but love the joke hahaha
The piechisode will be at number 1001, in honor of the 1001PS of the Veyron

ABC debuted with the W220 and its level of complexity is beyond that of ADS. While ADS is linked hydraulic shocks with adjustable valving and the ability to control height, ABC replaces basically the entire suspension with massive hydraulic pistons that are all individually controlled by fairly advanced computer systems.
You guys going to film the SD1 roadtrip? you really should!
I'm outside Edmonton, let me know how I can help
I also have Hagerty and AAA
And a truck and a flatdeck
You are a scholar and a gentleman
They might need strait jackets and sedation if things go wrong...
@@Dtamscott I know
39:45 Jason, next time just say you tried to get Eras Tour tickets. Still, glad you're almost the owner of an SD1
Not sure how you’ll do it but please put euro lights on the SD1
AAA policy works in Canada. vice versa my BCAA 320km towing policy works in USA. very handy when I go down to track days in Washington state from Vancouver Canada.
watching the auto-generated subtitles try and make sense of some of the nonsense and made up words and whatnot is pretty entertaining
Derek, what about the bikes on the wall??? We want to hear your thoughts on those.
Havent done enough research for the piechisode? Since when do you do any research for this show😂
But seriously, i love the show been watching since the start always entertaining
The picture of the underside.... lol! Did the prior owner dust it?
its finally here!
DTS please! Tells us more on how to make a good rally
road trip episode!
hey, what up with the road bikes? did I see some downtube shifters on the black and yellow bike? that would be on brand!
The message about Bosch quietcast is about 4 years too late. I did that to my Benz and of course I'm not happy I ever did.
Road trip Vlog Please........
Also make a video of "pontiac endurance test recreated"
SD1 was stylized after a Maserati Indy.
Saw a rover 3500 in Daly city Home Depot parking lot over the weekend. A 90 year old looking man was driving it, you could not tell it was a V8 by listening to it.
If it's red, then it is a V8, I've seen the car before. Man looks ancient.
Sounds like a job for VINwiki. Surely Ed Bolian does Rovers?
Rover Road Trip!
You missed taking your rover to the Edmonton British car show since it was this past weekend. Maybe when you go to Edmonton could do a episode with a live audience.
I’m in Edmonton, let me know if there anything I can do!
rover sdi road trip!!!! please it would be absolute gold. TVR spec engine swap? The guy who did the engine did the metro engine and worked for jordon f1. I can't remember his son's name it was 30 years ago.
A Rover?!?!?!?!!!!! And i thought buying a 2014 F31/N47 with 123k miles on it last November was a dicey move! 😂. Wagons rule! 👍
AAA and CAA are affiliates so you can get your benefits up here. Shouldn't be an issue if you need a tow. By the way, that Rover is up in my neck of the woods. Enjoy the trip to Alberta!
I am 59 mins late to the (not)piech-isode!
Just about every sleeper cab big rig has one of those turbine heaters to heat the cab with the engine off
you have to go to edmonton? yeeesh
Signed - Calgarian
Also if you go pick it up in early july you can go to the calgary stampede, i want to see hyphen in full cowboy regalia
Looks like Hyphen's got some cool bicycles! And one of them still has toe clips so he can live out his youth with vintage technology?
Lol got me with the thumbo ngl
Honda Fit!
@Derek Tam-Scott I wouldn't have thought of the Fit. Great idea. Those are cheap, and I remember them handling fairly well.
Lucid be desperate..
But I'm glad the check went to you guys!
Datsun 510 , Legend
Fun fact: the heater is literally called "Webasto" in Poland. I lived a huge chunk of my life thinking that means something in some other language before finding out it's a company name.
I was so excited, and then so disappointed after reading the title haha
Follow the Pieching Order
We'll get a Saccosode before a Piechisode.
Panasonic & Technics were same company. One of my first jobs was to work as hifi mechanic for both back in 1998-2000ish. Panasonic was equal in quality to Philips that was real german powerplayer those times.
What’s the book that Jason is supposed to read about porch?
Ferdinand Piëch: Auto-Biographie
The Series 2, Vitesse variant, of the SD1 is a far, far nicer creature than the Series 1 - much less, the Murican variety. 😬
Live stream the show from the car!
So this episode is both on isimi and curmudgeon show channel?
VW Phaeton V10 TDI diesel is ultimate Piech car or VW W12 Coupé.
Powers Performance do a 5.3 Litre conversion for the Rover V8. Powers used to be known as "TVR Power", TVR's engine department....just saying
I literally am sad it's not the Piëchesode...
