Laura Bailey needs to get an Emmy for this episode alone. I could feel Vex’s heartbreak and rage with every line she delivered. She truly is one of the best voice actors of all time.
Remember, this show is an adaptation of a live-play game where dice rolls determine outcomes. So not everything is going to perfectly fit a narrative or thematic flow. That's part of why it feels so fresh. But that also means that "no, they wouldn't kill that character at this time " doesn't work here. They made a lot of changes to fit it into a narrative flow, but highlights and major events (such as a VM character death) are the anchors around which that flow is structured. This isn't written from scratch, and so not everything makes the same kind of narrative or thematic sense. Keyleth has been able to turn into a fire elemental since season 2 episode 5, when she closed the rift to the Fire Plane.
Hey Achara & Steph :) I agree with you that the pace of this season is a lot faster and that the season is a lot darker , I suspect that it is because they didn't know if they'll get renewed for season 4 (it was only announced mid season). And a personal observation if I may.... I feel that the long wait between seasons (and between watching sessions) without taking a moment to recap what you watched before , made guys you forget some key aspect of the characters and important previous events, it feels as if you're less invested in the show compared to the previous seasons (and that's totally ok :) , I get it , there's not enough time to do everything) I just think that it takes away from your experience of this season , but regardless I enjoy watching you guys :)
To be fair Achara kills her own investment in most things by trying to predict every line of dialogue and every moment that will unfold. Rather than being invested in the story itself.
Can't have humor all the time. Need struggles and character development. It gives heart to the story. As for Raishan, her title is the Diseased Deceiver. It was never meant to be a shock that she turned.
With Laura Bailey playing vex as dramatically as she does in this season y'all are going to be so confused when you meet the mighty nein, and jester specifically.
“He was just gone,” is how it is in game at times. No big set up. No neat tied up moments. Bad dice rolls can lead to this. It sucks because we care about these characters. What they do has real stakes to the plot and actual character CONSEQUENCES. This is also what makes these stories so good. The unpredictability of everything is actually pretty refreshing.
Interesting reaction from the ladies. These 3 episodes for me were the best of the series. Oddly enough I didn't cry much when I watched them the first time but I felt emotionally drained. I watched them again a few hours later and the tears came. I also know the story and Laura's performance was next level amazing.
Travis was really good at tactics, but with Grog being stupid he couldn't join in the planning. Sometimes he couldn't help himself and they'd wave it off as Grog not knowing what he said.
Part of the "is this the last season" feeling comes from the fact that they didn't know they were going to be getting a 4th season when this was being made. (it got announced when the this batch of episodes was released) So the team was trying to wrap up EVERYTHING and the hits just keep coming. That's probably part of why the death doesn't feel as heavy. It was well done but it was fast. And TBF, that's almost how he died in the campaign, but Ripley didn't get away. The rest of the team tore her apart. As far as Raishan, she's more ambiguous in the campaign than she is in the show. She helps in the fights against the other dragons and the rest of the Whitestone council know who she is (eventually).
Hey, could you please lower the part with the details about what happen in campaign down and post a spoiler? There could be a few people who are watching, or might watch, the Live Stream that would like how it is different in game to be a surprise.
One of the greatest final boss fights I have ever seen in my life. The action choreography, the animation quality, the true sense that anyone could die in this episode, and the incredibly cathartic ending of Pike using a Dragon Ball Z looking attack followed by Vax avenging his mother and all of the people they lost leading up to this moment by dealing the killing blow to Thordak. I just wish Lance Reddick could’ve lived to see how truly epic this whole episode and his characters death would’ve looked like in the end. RIP Lance, we’ll never forget you.
when Liam O'Brien got the kill on Thordak, when describing how he wanted to do it, he said "I hear the voice of my mother in the morning". and the way they animated it might be my favorite part of this season.
Love how you dive into the details and give such thoughtful analysis!👏 Your reactions make watching Vox Machina even more fun. Keep up the great content, CinePals! 🙂
Character deaths are important to the game as well as this series. I've played D&D for years and yes, when it happens, it can be painful to players that have put a lot of time in that character. But its necessary to know a character's life is finite. Which is one problem I find with the base rules of 5th edition D&D, its too easy for characters to survive major encounters. With that said, Percy's death was important and needed to be impactful.
Also I'm sort of amazed that everyone seems to go through the actual stages of grief when dealing with Percy's death. I can't remember all of them off the top of my head but clearly I saw a denial and bargaining.
As someone who’s been following Critical Role for years I’m living for Steph’s investment in these characters and story. Her “because you’re my ONE” sent me
Percy's death makes perfect sense and is probably the most realistic thing about any show I've watched in a while. You don't always get things wrapped up in a neat little bow, reality is chaos, life sucks, then you die.
Grog has his moments when Travis rolls really well :D Critical Role is all about those darker themes and people die that is DnD. Dark themes and dirty jokes that fits perfect to them.
Honestly love that they opened ep8 on Percy's funeral, cause fans really got into a sense of false security with the revival of Vex last season so they really had to convince people that you dont get to just hand wave away death.
I think an earlier commenter made this observation, but the gap between the first half of Season 3 and the 2nd half may have killed the momentum of the show. Percy's death was a surprise for me, but after the brutal fight scenes with Vorugal and that demon and Whitestone getting attacked by the young dragons, it didn't feel like a complete shock (I also never felt that anyone had complete plot armor, and I wouldn't be surprised if not all of Vox makes it to the end). Percy's death surprising? Yes. But I did enjoy the tone, I like how episodes 8-9 felt like something out of the Lord of the Rings. It gave me Battle of Helm's Deep vibes. Scanlan's "death" did feel a little bit like piling on. But trust me, all of this will pay off. The show is getting darker because the stakes are higher, which mirrors a table-top campaign. The show will probably maintain a certain level of intensity because season 4's Big Bad is probably at least as powerful as the Chroma Conclave. But the show you love is still there. Episodes 10-12 does dial down the darkness a little bit. And the season finale is worth it.
The problem we have here is that in the show they have stated that coming back from the dead is extremely rare, unlike in D&D where you just need a cleric of decent level and some material cost.
My guess is the show they are talking about is Arcane? There are resurrections after a fashion on that show as well. But those are very rare and extremely costly on Arcane.
It’s not the final season, their campaign had quite a bit of player death in the Conclave Arc (some of which was removed from the series). There’s a whole lot more to come if it doesn’t get canceled, and I’m fairly certain they announced a renewal for Season 4. Which would likely come in late 2025. And then there’s the beginning of “The Mighty Nein.”
If it helps contextualise, Green dragons [raishaan is an Ancient Green dragon, centuries old], are insanely manipulative and greedy, and generally evil, so whilst their intentions are extremely easy to read on the outside, in game, there are mechanics to checking if people are being deceitful, as a centuries old "diseased deceiver" by name - she is incredibly tricky to read in general. But whilst who was she not deceiving at this point 😅 you guys have the denial phase locked down with percy tho omg hahaha.
Oh no, Percy died girls. And I’m really shocked/disappointed that you guys didn’t cry. I cried when he died and even more on his funeral. This show destroyed me 😭😭😭
How you guys didn't rememberd Keyleth's elemental fire form from season 2? I mean I know that you watched season 2 a long time ago but Keyleth learning how to transform herself into elemental was one of the most epic moments in season 2
I watched the campaign and it was a bit different from the show. It’s just as good watching the show. They were intense I’m sorry they are intense. I really enjoy the both of you doing a review on the episodes.
I disagree with the idea that "Keyleth was right the whole time"; it's an idea that the show puts forth, and a lot of the fanbase agree with, but Raishan never lied about her motivations. From the start, she said that she only cared about killing Thordak, and her allegiance with Vox Machina only went as far as that goal. Meanwhile, Keyleth had a nonstop "thanks, Obama" reaction towards Raishan whenever *anything* went wrong, even when it was clear that Raishan had nothing to do with it. Keyleth resented the rest of the group for listening to Raishan's plans, yet never offered any alternatives. And the fact of the matter is that the party only prevailed over Thordak because of the Plate of the Dawnmartyr...which they only even knew about because Raishan told them. If the group had followed Keyleth's lack of plan, then Thordak's offspring would've hatched and burned the continent before Vox Machina was equipped to do anything about it.
"I love a bit of dick lightning" "Is that too much to ask for?" LMFAO you two are genuinely such a treat to watch. Your reaction to Percy's situation and honestly everything else made the runtime of this video worth it. Cheers!
Travis is a pretty smart guy (he's the CEO of CR) but Grog with his intelligence of 6, not so much. So when Travis comes up with a good plan, sometimes Grog gets a headache, or even takes some psychic damage.
The next season hadn’t been greenlit until after this one had started airing, so it was written with the very real prospect that this was the final season.
I love watching reactors see what happens to Percy. Some go at it with thematic storytelling involved. “That can’t happen it doesn’t make sense narratively and with the plot lines” And others are like “oh I forgot this was just a DnD game brought to life… narrative has as high of a seat at the rules”
You gotta remember, this is adapted from their irl d&d game. So as sad as it is to admit, sometimes lives are cut short, and you don't always get to have that happy ending.
I’ve seen the campaign so this caught me off guard. Then next episode I audibly said, “damn, ok”. To myself. There’s so many narrative beats different from the campaign. I just let em cook.
Its hard when you are dealing with board game/video game death. In a world where permadeath is so rare. You dont cry when the character you are playing dies, you just reload and retry.
Sorry to be the semantics guy but Ripley never worked "for" dragons, she did work "with" them to achieve her own goals. Even manipulated a dragon with her smarts. She's in a league of her own
The show has always been focused on “fate” Vax’s storyline deals with it heavily. Percy also deals with it. He was always going to lose. If he had stayed being the person he was and took out Ripley, he would have succumbed to Orthax already, or have died in the castle with all his friends in the desert kingdom. But, Percy is actually just a good guy who wants justice to be met for all people. So he died to Ripley. The game was rigged from the start. The matron says so, all things die but it gives meaning to life. Percy found the meaning in his life. That’s it.
that may be, but in the campaign, Percy said that he forgives Ripley, but that he couldn't let her leave the island - a recognition that even when you aren't acting out of vengeance, sometimes monsters like her need to be put down.

Matt: "Pretty easily, actually!"
barely an inconvenience

Percy is dead, but resurrection magic exists. You can bet your ass they're gonna try.
DnD death rule of thumb: if your body isn’t smashed, they can bring you back
The show has always been focused on “fate”
Vax’s storyline deals with it heavily. Percy also deals with it. He was always going to lose.
