  • One of the ways Adam has been getting through lockdown has been binging television shows, including Netflix's The Crown. And in the midst of his obsession with the show, Adam builds his own replica of the most important piece of The Crown Jewels: St Edward's Crown used for the coronation of British Monarch. Adam's replica is based on the stage prop made for the Hamilton musical, and will be the centerpiece for his King George costume!
    Materials for making the Crown:

As a jeweller, may I suggest a thing about cleaning brass from flux and soldering stains? One of the most effective methods I know is just soaking the part in dissolved boiling hot citric acid. Makes the parts clean and shiny in just a couple of minutes :)
Citric acid is dirt cheap and removes most of the stains extremely effectively. You can just watch all the scales and particles flow off your part, and go to polishing almost immediately after this treatment. Just make sure that the acid is really hot.
Also, you should "set" your flux with a blowtorch as you are applying it (or just apply it to preheated brass), so that it becomes kinda like a white foam coating. This prevents extra scaling and stain buildup and keeps your soldering joints cleaner.

Gem picking-and-placing hack: get yourself some dental wax from the drugstore for $2 and put a piece of it on a stick. The dental wax is sticky enough to pick up your gems, but less sticky than your adhesive. No more gems going *PINGpingpingping* across the room from your tweezers. One pack of dental wax will last you YEARS.

Specular = having the properties of a mirror.
Iridescent = colours that seem to change when seen from different angles.

    • @dawnchesbro4189
      @dawnchesbro4189 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Except most velvet is one color - bi-color velvets do exist. Iridescence is many hues (colors) that seem to change with light direction. The optical property of velvet is called bidirectional reflection distribution function. That is how the value (the relative dark to light scale of one hue) is optically perceived by the eye when it looks at velvet.
Iridescence = hue (like unicorn skin)
Bidriectional reflection distribution function = value (like single hue velvet or some flower petals)

I was the propmaker for our high school theater productions (and sound and light board operator)... and you Are So Right.
We did Grease one year and "Greased Lightning" was a golf cart with a thin cosmetic shell... which the actors could never not somehow smash against some piece of scenery Every. Single. Time.
Fortunately the scenery itself was 2x4 construction and just needed repainting... but I had to rebuild that shell after every show.

@22:45 Today I Learned: Adam has a proper blacksmiths anvil! With the Pritchel hole and Hardy hole both still in good shape, a cut-off shoulder that looks good, and the Farriers horn still pretty clean. And he’s using the Farriers horn for shaping metal in what appears to be the correct way!

I really like the editor's choice of putting Adam's occasional words over the time-lapse footage. I can get a little exhausted by the time-lapse-music, it gets pretty repetitive when used for too long. I like the time-lapse segments to BE long, it's just that the instrumental JinglePunks music doesn't always hold up after 30 solid seconds just by itself. So the talking-bits put over top is EXCELLENT!

The narrative arch to building things is something I've come to appreciate. There is a character development phase where everything looks like crap, and then a rising action where things start to come together, and a climax where things go wrong and get fixed and then the end result where you look at it and say "wow, that is done." and then for me there is always a 'denouement' where I cart the thing around for days loving it until I get sick of it.

I started out sceptical to the video, cause royal bling is not a thing I care for.
But this video ended up, of cause, very cool. I think this is a perfect "how props are made" video for anyone wanting insight into the world of how these things often are made.
Simple, cheap (producers usually don't wanna spend money on "stuff" if they don´t have to) and put together with a glue gun. Though it based on a play it have a bit of movie build feel to it more then a theatre maybe. (as I finish this sentence Adam starts to talk about theatre props vs movie props :) ) (yes, i DID nod my head even though I don't make that much theatre stuff)
Anyway, super fun to watch this build. And to be fair, part of the fun is always watching Adam geeking out and talk about all the surrounding stuff and technique.
