I've caught Kokanee in Folsom many times ,when it was planted but about 50 years ago i caught probably 60 or more Kokanee from Folsom, ,,, even saw a sturgeon roll in that lake . All happened back in the early 1970s all up the south fork in an area called bouy 7

When I was a kid we trolled Folsom lake in the south fork arm above the bridge. I caught a 4 inch long king salmon on a spoon.

Great video, as usual, and accurate. One of the most frustrating things about Folsom is what happens to all the planters-especially kings. Last spring there were 90+ thousand king fingerlings planted. This year I think it was 85k. Last year, yes, the large (size-wise) kings fishery was incredible- most amazing I've seen in 25+ years fishing out there- but it was an unusual set of circumstances that led to it and I doubt we'll see it again for awhile. But, you'd think there'd be a lot more bycatch of those planters from last year and this year, but as far as I can tell, that hasn't been the case. Where are the little shakers that have been so prevalent in years past. I wonder if, because there are so many cormorants and grebes out there, they prey on the smaller fish more than is maybe realized. Especially when you also factor in bass predation too. I think even planter trout adapt to the lake conditions and find their way into the rivers at certain times of the year, which is why it can be great for a few weeks, then it dies off. They become migratory. And when they're in the rivers, they're not as exposed to the diving birds or bass. But the small kings are out there all the time, and, maybe, vulnerable. I don't know, just one of the many theories I've concocted in my head that sound good on days I've gotten skunked over the years.

I went out with a guide recently and only caught one a 12" trout. I noticed on his fish finder that there was an incredible amount of baitfish out there. Fish at folsom just gorge themselves on them so they often aren't hungry enough to hit what you throw out...

Hello, and thanks for the information. I have never fished Folsom Lake but I do plan on giving it a try in the near future. I have family members that have recently moved up to the foothills near the lake and we are interested in learning the lake.

I’m always wondering how the water flows on this lake move the fish around. Do you use that at all when cutting down the lake?
