But the Fab Four do what they always do by giving you double meaning lyrics.I wasn't quite sure how to take the Nowhere man is like you and me lyric.

Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys once said that as he was watching the Beatles play this song during their last tour, which was extremely grueling, even above all the noise and chaos McCartney hit that last note dead on and Lennon looked over at him with a smile and a nod. Always giving their best.
I was there, too! And it was HARRISON, hitting that last chord when John gave HIM the nod, also bc of the way George struck the note!!

To understand where "Nowhere man" came from, we have to go back to 1965. The Beatles were on the height of their career and the band were introduced to another musical legend: Bob Dylan. Of Course the Beatles knew about Dylan and were full of praise over what he was bring to the table.
The admiration was mutual, Dylan was full of praise about the melodies the Fab Four came up with but, he argued, "Your songs aren't saying anything!" Songs like "She loves you", "I wanna hold your hand" and the likes weren't making a statement, weren't talking about real life. Of course to John and Paul, that was a challenge, writing songs about real life.
Paul began to write songs about the common man: "Paper back writer", "The fool on the hill", "Penny Lane"
John however decided to look in the mirror and started writing about the guy staring back at him and how he could barely cope with what it meant to be a Beatle.
- Grueling recording and touring schedules
- The fact that his marriage was falling apart and he barely knew his own son
- The fact that as a Beatle he was part of a money making machine
So the songs he came up with such as "Help", "Strawberry Fields forever", "You've got to hide your love away", "I'm only sleeping" were John expressing how fed up he was with all the madness.
"Nowhere man" is John singing about himself, how those tours would take the Beatles to the most incredible countries but how he couldn't even get out of his hotel room. He was going everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Losing complete touch with reality in the process. So he basically says to the listener, "Look at this man, completely lost, so please show some sympathy to him, after all don't we all have moments like that too in our lives?"
But it's also hopeful, "Nowhere man, don't worry, take your time, don't hurry, leave it all 'til somebody else lends you a hand." He knew that things would eventually be looking up for him in time.
I assume he was probably really just remembering an old comic book villian.

@@porflepopnecker4376 That may be so but his songs are legendary. Personally, I think Bob had to be at least a little unhinged to write such brilliant lyrics. :) I think that who he hung out with was a source of inspiration as well.

Exactly! John didn’t want everybody to read into all their songs so much! He wanted to write a fun song without any real meaning sometimes.
John said he was laying on a couch and thinking of his life and the Lyrics came pouring out.
John had said in interviews that the song Nowhere Man came about as he was trying to write a song, but was having writers block. After having a nap, John tried again to write, but couldn't. So, he started thinking about how he wasn't getting nowhere, and he started envisioning himself as a "nowhere man". From there, he was able to create lyrics to the song.
I think "Nowhere Man" is basically John Lennon being brutally honest about himself. He's baring his soul regarding his estimation of himself. It seems he was rather pessimistic about life in general. So many of his own songs that people would rave about he'd consider "throw-aways," he was so critical about his talent.

@@stephentoto6564 I believe that he wrote far better songs with The Beatles than he did after the breakup. I think he needed real validation by other musicians, and he couldn't get that with Ono telling him that everything he was doing was "great."
That said, I think that Paul and George lost the same validation after they went their separate ways too. To me the "magic" was gone for all of them after the breakup. It just wasn't the same anymore.

It's when you feel like your life is spinning around without any clue... It was certainly the feeling is was experiencing sometimes as we do as well

Lennon was a sharp tongue and often dismissive/aloof towards the other Beatles and even himself ... but one thing he was never wishy washy on was that Paul McCartney is the greatest rock n roll bass player in the world. John held Paul's bass playing in the highest regard.
There are many bass players much better than McCartney.

McCartney's playing style comes from the fact that he is Paul freakin McCartney musical genius. His playing style changed a bit when he switched to using a Rickenbacker bass that stayed in tune better than the Hofner violin bass. At this point in their recording career they started doing overdubs for vocals.
I remember our 9th grade English teacher making himself officially ‘cool’ by having the class listen to this song and then going into the lyrics meaning. In this song that teacher saw poetry and also that it spoke to the ‘Everyman’. Yes, there is a little of this in all of us. We may not have a point of view or a plan for life. And even those who do may in the end be making those plans for no one or no impact. And that is just one of many perspectives on this song. The world is at your command.

Nowhere Man was written by John Lennon. Beatle songs up until then had been about relationships, couples etc. This was the first song to break away from that. John wrote Nowhere Man about HIMSELF and how he was feeling at the time. He didn't want to be asked the usual questions about his opinion on various things. "Doesn't have a point of view, knows not where he's going to" If you listen to the song you will realize he's talking about himself and that time of his life. His marriage was not working anymore. There is a line in it "Take your time don't hurry, leave it all till somebody else lends you a hand" is about PAUL. He had been working on the song but he was having problems with it. That line meant he would just wait for Paul to lend a hand as they always helped each other. I always loved John's songs as he often wrote about how he was feeling at the time he wrote them. Nowhere man was simply John writing about how he felt at that time. In the midst of BEATLEMANIA. He's questioning why he feels like a NOWHERE MAN "The world is at your command" The huge influence they had was incredible, you had to be there to understand it fully.
P.S. I just love your enthusiasm for this music and I'm enjoying watching you discover these Beatle songs for the first time in 2021 after all these years.

I think this song comes out of John's depression. He actually wrote a song called I'm a Loser.
The lyrics are "Isn't he a bit like you and me", not "Isn't he like you and me". The word 'bit" is important, because it says we can all be a little like that, not that we are like that completely.
I agree with you about the harmonies. Please check out “If I Fell” for an early Beatles song with lovely harmonies or “Because”, which came later but will knock your socks off with harmony. As always, I love your reaction. 😍

There's a video of Dave Grohl playing some of his fave Beatle songs. "Because" is one and he talks about hearing it with the vocal track isolated in the Cirque du Soleil show "Love." Sounded like an incredible experience!
I always listened to this song and thought about a time in life when you are "stuck"....
My fav Beatles era is the Revolver and Rubber Soul era. The songs became more cerebral and the melodies more unexpected, but still beautiful. This is def one of my fav John songs..
The Beatles also did something no one had thought of....the lead guitar break is after the first verse! They fundamentally changed the way a song is structured. Another first .

As a kid it brings back memories of swimming at the State Rd. Pool, the mean nuns in grade school, fish fry at Koopman’s. Life was good listening to the Beatles.
For me, this song is about all of the time we waste dreaming instead of doing. We're introduced to this fictional "nowhere man" who is constantly making big plans but never following through. He's always going somewhere in his head, but never in real life; so where is he? He's "nowhere." Then we're gently reminded that we all do this sometimes - the Nowhere Man is us. "Isn't he a bit like you and me?" is a bit of sardonic wit, sort of like saying, "does that remind you of anybody?"
I love the Beatles and this is one of my favorite songs. The harmonies, the bass, the lead guitar break (which is actually two Strats played in unison through a compressor), all of it. It's sublime.

LOL Vocal harmonies and lead vocal are marvelous, amazing bass, iconic guitar solo. Lennon was talking about himself when he wrote the lyrics. He was sitting around trying to write a song, and he came up empty. When he gave up, this song came to him.

The Nowhere Man was also a character in the Yellow Submarine animated movie. His other name was Jetemy !
True, but the only music specifically written for the film was George Martin's instrumental score, and Paul McCartney's 'All together now' . All the other songs in the film were already written,( although not all of them officially released prior to the 'Yellow submarine' album) and the directors and animators created narrative sequences to fit the choice of songs. The film fulfilled part of a commitment and The Beatles had very little interest or creative involvement in it, they were certainly initially very sceptical of it's merits, but finally came around when they saw the finished film.
I love your reactions to Beatles songs! I first heard them when I was 14 years old and have loved their music for the last 58 years. The evolution of the music through their years together was amazing, especially considering they were only recording together for about 8 years. The influence they had on the music and culture of my youth was immense and I appreciate that you enjoy their music.

Their musicianship is also strikingly original and engaging with no need for excessive technical showing off but always with a tasteful and appropriate arrangement and production values. Unlike most temporary music, their elocution is so precise that I can hear every syllable clearly and the accompaniment is truly accompanying rather than distractive or unintegrated. But that was the basic approach for all popular acts in those days. Modern radio songs are too muddled and stuck in a rut. The Beatles rescued popular music of the late 50s and early 60s. Now the music of today also needs to be rescued from its stagnated state.
This was my first album, given to me for Christmas by my Dad, when I was 12. I still have it. My favorite group ever. John was the best song writer ever.

I have a friend who is a professional bass player. I once asked him what he thought of Paul McCartney as a bass player. He said that Paul was a "God" in that respect. I don't get hung up on the "a bit like you and me" lyric. I look at the song as giving a hopeful outlook, saying there is more to be had in life. "Nowhere man, please listen. You don't know what you're missing. The world is at your command."
As regards McCartney bass playing, yes a fantastic bass player, but playing the bass at the same time as singing! That's extremely difficult, but then again he is a genius.

John had a great sense of time (of course, they all did) and sang at the back edge of the beat. Never in a hurry and always in rhythm. Like his personality.
McCartney was a monster bassist. He played lead guitar better than most.
Paul is a musical genius. He plays every instrument superbly. He only played bass in the Beatles as John had the rhythm spot, and George was very good on lead. You need to review Paperback Writer. Amazing harmonies.
I went to a strict Cath. HS when this song came out, and they stressed figuring out math problems on your own. I'd get depressed and give up and wait for soeone to help me figure out the formulae, so the lyrics "leave it all till somebody else lends you hand..." reminded me of myself and I'd put a negative connotation on it.

@@stevenmurano7863 Unless I'm mis-remembering, this is the first song where George and John played their new Fender Stratocasters - they'd sent Mal Evans out to the music shop to get them a couple - he just pulled a matching pair of Sonic Blue ones off the wall and brought them back - I don't think anyone had guitar techs back then. To get that rather extreme "jangle" they were run from one channel of the mixing board with the treble cranked all the way up into another channel - also with the treble cranked all the way up - totally freaking out the engineer (Geoff Emerick?) with the amount of treble on the guitars. "We want them that way" they said. And they were right.
Hi Harri, you're actually answering a lot of your questions very well. The Beatles, like others at that time were quite busy going somewhere, surrounded by many smoking their time away as it were. What I think is impressive is John recognizing a little of the nowhere man in himself i.e not being overly critical of others. Perhaps the 60s Love revolution came to an end through a little too many with the nowhere man's attitude.

John wrote the song while he was trying to write a song and had no idea about what it should be. Nowhere man refers in special that single situation. In general it refers to his personal situation in that time (1965). He felt lost and without target, his marriage was going worse. The song is connected to 'Help' which refers to the same situation.
I saw in an interview with John where he said the nowhere man was written because he was fed up with people trying to analyse his lyrics and their meanings. So he wrote a song about nothing and nowhere and no one.
That was " I am the Walrus" after he heard schools were analyzing his lyrics.

I was in high school when I first heard this song and really liked it. I don't know what John Lennon meant by a "Nowhere Man" but it always made me think of Charles de Gaulle, the French leader. By the 1960's he seemed to be taking France in a contrary direction from that of the other Western allies. He had become somewhat aloof and obstinate.
At this point was when Paul started putting the bass forward. This changed things for many bass players. If you want to hear great bass playing by Paul, listen to the flip side of Paperback Writer, RAIN. It'll blow your mind. Another amazing bassman was Jack Bruce, of Cream . Listen to Im So Glad, from the album Goodbye Cream .

How John felt at the height of Beatlemania. Instead of singing "I'm a real nowhere man" he sang 'He's a real Nowhere Man". Very great song! 1965.
The Byrds were debuting with their stellar Mr. Tambourine Man around the time Beatles released Rubber Soul. Similar Folk Pop harmony songs but for my money, The Beatles were the finest act. Obviously an influence on The Byrds, both bands were Top Notch!

Nowhere man is from The Beatles album Rubber Soul that came out in December 1965 this song was also featured on the Beatles film yellow submarine from 1968 along with Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds strawberry Fields Eleanor Rigby it's all too much George Harrison song that song that was from 1968 hey bulldog Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and All You Need Is Love was in the cartoon film yellow submarine from 1969
Feeling lost and lone. I do have moments when I don't know what I'm efforting so much for, or that I don't belong anywhere. I think I kind of get the feeling of the song, it's not just depressive but a self scolding of sorts.
Same category is "Fool on the Hill".
For me,this is one of the most perfect 2.5ish minute pop songs.
Along with the rest of the songs on Rubber Soul (and Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out which were released as 45 single only),this is them at their best as the Fab 4,singing and playing together.
It was simply magic being alive at that time, and hearing those songs come out on the radio. Buying the albums (or finding them under the Christmas tree) and playing them till the grooves fell off. Our generation won the cosmic lottery, being just the right age to live through Beatlemania and get to love those songs for all these decades.
Well here in the States Day Tripper and We Can Work It Out was on the album Yesterday and Today which was a great album because it was a mix of the British Rubber Soul and Revolver albums .

Think of a man on an island on his own. He is just living his day to day life. This nowhere man is sitting in his nowhere land making all his nowhere plans for nobody. He doesn't have a point of view and he knows not where he's going too isn't he a bit like you and me. He's telling you to be this man, take time out and enjoy the ride of life without rushing or worrying. Be happy and enjoy life.
I was born in 1950 and can quite vividly recall the 60s' explosion in music very much at the hands of The Beatles. It was widely believed back then, and I still believe now that "Nowhere Man" was about then President Lyndon Johnson, in his bubble of nowhere advisers making world altering decisions based on nowhere information. (Vietnam War)
George Harrison lead guitar work here is stellar, its about enhancing the song, not standing in the spotlight all the f-in time. Yet it makes the song whole. Without it the songs stands alone, but VERY alone. These guitar riffs and [some of Lennon's and McCartney's also] on all the songs are now classic. A real band has teamwork...the Beatles were the epitome of teamwork. same goes for Motown musicians and Wrecking Crew Musicians. Except the Beatle were their OWN Wrecking Crew.
We are all a "Nowhere Man" somehow, because weare are all dreaming our little dreams that nobody else is interested in, making our little plans that nobody else interested in, but someday - remember John says "The World is at your command" - someday, we will be able to realize these little dreams and plans, and with them, we will change the world. :-)

One thing that stands out from paul as a bass player…he never plays the same fill twice in any given song. There’s always a slight variation.

You are thinking in 2021 instead of 1965. Rock music back then was just beginning to develop social conscience, mostly influenced by Folk Music that transformed society. These days life is all about social conscience while the music is just whacked.

The Beatles were destined to meet and become the greatest, excellent band nobody ever can ever touch!! George felt like he wasn't allowed to write and sing and felt it wasn't fair! One thing that George did was play that lead guitar with such expertise!! And as far as Ringo was concerned if he was a Beatle with such great timing and rythym!! I've always believed this song was about the Nowhere Man representing the "sheep" who follow without knowing anything about what they're following, living life without realizing the reality of what's happening, and who need to be woken up to reality.
I think there was a feeling in the 60s that people were emerging from a world of unexamined patrtiotism, unexamined careerism, and so on. It made the hippies sometimes rather unfair to their elders, but the song fits in well with a time when people were questioning why they were doing what they were doing. And John Lennon certainly had a lot of issues leftover from the losses of his childhood, so I can well imagine him wondering where he was headed.
Paul's bass playing is so underrated..
