  • Ultimate accessory to the die hard High Lift Jack.
    60" Hi Lift Jack: amzn.to/2HKtKLF
    Hi Lift Jack accessories: amzn.to/2GaKf6o
    These Hi Lift jacks can lift 7000lbs(3.5tons), so that is the force that is applied to the log. It had no trouble with dried 10" rounds of softwood and some hardwood. Definitely a lot less work than swinging an axe/maul but won't keep up with a hydraulic log splitter.

    My compliments on knowing how to make a video. All too often they tell you what they're going to make and you have to go to the end to see if it's anything you're interested in making. Showing the finished product at the start of the video makes total sense! Great idea for those of us who never go anywhere without a hi-lift. And having it serve multiple purposes makes a lot of sense.

    really well done - great thinking, designing and fabricating. I'm a beginner welder and really enjoy seeing creative solutions like this. I have a hi lift jack and am contemplating how to incorporate it into a build to lift my dirt bike on to a hitch stand (for transport).

    I saw this video and had to build my own variation of this. I have no welder, or plasma cutter... so nuts and bolts it is. I used an old ax head I found metal detecting as the cutting edge. Today is the day I try it out. I really like the 2 pin quick adjustment handle you made. Thank you for posting!!

    this is one of the very best idea that a person could come up with thank you now if you weld 2 long legs from top to bottom like a tripod and hold the bottom of the legs with 2 long changes so they don't move you don't have to use your other hand the back support of the legs would hold the jack for you. and on the bottom plate the holds the wood weld a big plate so it can hold any size of wood. thank you for this video

    The concept is good, but it is going to take longer than using a sharp or a hydraulic or gas powered log splitter. I do agree with your viewers that this would be great if your camping. Not everyone wants to bring an ax with them so this is a great alternative. Especially with the holders that bolt to your vehicle that they now make for these type jacks. Thanks for great video.

  • @handymanhoney-do6881

    Ok so if you make a C shaped base attachment to slip around a Jeep bumper and a vertical support (2x4, whatever) for the top end that has holes to put a bolt/ pin through the shaft, it would make this stable and horizontal--more like a regular log splitter. As for the splitting adapter-could you just weld a splitting maul to a piece of rectangular steel sleeve and drill pin holes aligned with the shaft? Also thinking there could be a way of having springs on there to make the setup faster between logs. Great modification!

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mild steel won't take any real hardening and always stays ductile. I made some throwing knives out of mild steel years ago and went through heating and oil quenching only to find out that it was pointless. Metallurgist guys who know way more than me about it say you can't noticeably harden mild steel due to the low carbon. I could weld a bead of high carbon hard facing onto the tip and it would be significantly harder.

    Brilliant. I can swing a maul like a gorilla, but at least half the population can't. This is a great inexpensive option for them. Also great for knotted wood. It deflects the blows. You really should sell them. I'd buy for double the cost of the metal. Maybe more.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking the same thing when using it . I built it primarily for camping, so compact and portability are key. However if is was bolted down to a solid surface, had a guy wire and longer handle; it would be unstoppable.

    SO COOL!

  • @thebanjoman1963
    @thebanjoman1963 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Freestanding like that, somebody could get hurt. it'd be much safer if it had a good stable base where you could use both hands to operate the jack instead of trying to balance the whole thing. I'd make a bracket to slide it into the receiver of your truck so the whole unit would be supported.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's going to make it's life as a camping accessory, so simplicity/portability is key. If it was bolts straight to the concrete or a 2x12 board will do very well.

    I don't know about that idea lol , Maybe good for the logs that the axe cannot kill
    Seems like it would take a lot of time to use lol
    But still a great idea! and be good in the truck for a backup tool

    Cool mod! Ain't fabbing fun?
    You could gun some lag bolts into a stump to keep it vertical, or fab a vertical with a hinge so you can gravity drop the jack on your target log and split it on the ground without lifting the log. Kick log under, kick pieces away, repeat. Check the zillion other horizontal splitters for inspiration.
    If you need to proof test it I volunteer my ex-mother-in-law's head but it might bend the beam...

    Put it side way so you will be able to use your whole body, easier to manage the log and you can put wheel on it

      It works OK. I wouldn't split a cord of wood with it but a few logs here and there.

  • @usdpaulp
    @usdpaulp 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not a bad project, but I don't think it's practical for use the way it is now. Maybe if it had some kind of bracket to hold the wood and also extend the handle for more leverage. I could see it really help older/weaker guys on a budget.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wanted to keep it as small portable as possible for camping. I had originally planned on a table/bracket but opted not to. However after some use I think I'm going to make a simple bracket to hold the log.

    You should make one to slide a hydraulic floor jack in .

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had a hydraulic jack model a long time ago. It was painfully slow at roughly 1/8" travel per handle stroke. It would split pretty much anything though.

    I wonder if you could lay it horizontally on top of a larger round to help break it down to more manageable chunks. or even use it to rive shorter fence posts (split rail)?

    • @sixtyfiveford

      I did try putting horizontal onto a log and it worked.

    As a fellow welder and fabricator I really appreciate the ingenuity of this project. However, I'm severely faster with an axe and maul. Great idea and build though.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      More of a curiosity than anything. It won't win a race but will make it's home next to the Hi Lift jack in my truck. I'm sure I'll pull it out during the occasional camping trip.

  • @ronyerke9250
    @ronyerke9250 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Slow but effective. If that's quicker than you can swing a maul, then you should work on your maul technique. Search for splitting technique videos. There are several.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      A maul is for sure quicker.... If you don't get too tired. This exerts a fraction of the energy. So this is a tortoise and the hare situation.

    • @ronyerke9250
      @ronyerke9250 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good technique also reduces fatigue. How much wood are you planning to split? There's only so much time in a person's life. I'll look for the video I found most impressive and put directions in another comment for you.

    • @ronyerke9250
      @ronyerke9250 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      UPNORTHOF60 has a video called: Use this technique the next time you split wood. I'd rather be heating my home and cooking my food on the wood I've already finishe splitting than to keep pushing a lever about 20 times as long, being cold and hungry. That's a dead tortoise. If you're giving somebody with disabilities a chance to help out, fine, but I wouldn't want to rely on that thing.
