I think that the Timpani can be the loudest instrument or also the softest instrument within the orchestra🎵
Is your grip German or French?
While studying in Boston, I was mainly using a French grip.
After studying in Berlin, I started to use a German grip with my hands turned over using less fingers and no fulcrum between the index finger and thumb.
However, sometimes when playing soft and especially for soft timpani rolls, I find it very comfortable to revert back to the French grip for better control and sound.

I feel that the German technique allows me to have a bit more power and stamina for loud playing.
Also, in contrast between the German and French techniques, the mallet angle and contact points to the timpani heads are a bit different as well. When playing on calf skins, a German grip feels much better for me!
