I arrived at my patient’s home, and she fainted shortly after opening the door while walking toward her chair. She is a retired white woman who worked her entire life. She declined to go to the emergency room, citing concerns about her mounting ER bills, as she had been there just days prior. Although she regained consciousness as paramedics were preparing to transport her, she again refused due to the financial burden.

My British gf was visiting here and a few years and had a medical problem. I took her to our local hospital in nowhere, Indiana. She only had her national healthcare card from the UK, which they couldn't accept.
They admitted her and treated her promptly. She was first amazed how clean our hospitals are and, second, shocked how quickly she was admitted and treated.
By the way, they never sent a bill to us.

Recently I visited my doctor. He went through a lot of questions (the normal litany of questions such as family history, any recent dizziness, etc.) that he needed to know. But there were a couple of questions he kinda guided my answers on. Not major health questions really either. When I asked him what was up with that, he smiled and said that the correct answer on these very minor questions would ensure my coverage. I love my doctor. He knows how to game the system. That said, if something catastrophic happens I don't think even he could win against the colossus of the for-profit insurance.

“In 2010, a private-equity firm purchased six Catholic hospitals in Massachusetts, under the condition that the hospitals stay open and their workers remain employed for a five-year review period. Mere months after that period ended, the land where the hospitals stood was sold, forcing the facilities to pay rent. According to a recent report, the financial strain led to disinvestment in staffing, surgical equipment, elevator repairs, and even clean linens. Patients increasingly languished in emergency rooms, and mortality rates for common conditions rose. The firm realized an over-all profit of seven hundred and ninety million dollars.
More than four hundred and fifty hospitals in the United States are now owned by private-equity firms. As Dhruv Khullar notes, “Health care is where the money is.” In the course of the past few years, corporations have learned to gamify the system in order to reap payments from the government, while simultaneously making necessary care more expensive for patients.” New Yorker essay, 12.12.2024

Ever wonder how hospitals and providers get away with having patients electronically sign a financial responsibility statement (you will pay any service your insurance denies OR services provided your insurance contract doesn't cover OR you will pay everything if you have no insurance) without that signer seeing or reading the document? Also, you must ASK for a copy of the document - they certainly don't offer it. (Guess the copies cost money.) Also, if you don't sign it's basically sorry about that - leave (unless you are unconscious and alone) - NEXT.
