I don’t know if you’ll read this since i’m watching it 4 years later, I came to this video after watching ur essay on eat your young. I’ve been feeling so out of it lately because i’m struggling intensely because of my mental illness which i’ve been recently diagnosed with but hearing you talk about art, music with so much passion & love is giving me hope again. Thank you so much for making these videos and talking about ur interests
Stuti, that's so kind! I'm so sorry that you're struggling with your mental health. I myself have a long history of various mental health issues so you're not alone and it's wonderful that we can share art as a way to connect and heal ❤️ Hope to see you around again soon! xx
To me, I always felt like in "Almost" he is still in love with his former gal, but he’s really trying to fall for the new one, but keeps comparing her to his ex. The same kind of music haunts her bedroom I'm almost me again, she's almost you I got some colour back, she thinks so, too I laugh like me again, she laughs like you She'll turn to me awake and ask, "Is everything alright?" I think it is also important to mention that during an interview he stated that the song could be summed up by the lyrics “I’m almost me again, she’s almost you”.
Yes. Identifying a problem is pointless if we don't rise up to make a change. Hozier is back to basics R&B, master arrangements, beautiful harmonies, most beautiful Male vocalist I've heard in my lifetime.
I always interpreted Almost to be a sad song actually, so it's really interesting to see an interpretation that's so happy. I mean, of course it sounds happy on the surface, but I always interpreted that to be a deliberately misleading, in kind of a parallel to the song's meaning/lyrics. I thought it was about the loss of a relationship of some kind, with the speaker trying to distract themselves from being saddened by this huge loss or deliberately covering it up to whoever "you" is, begging his heart to not ruin happy moments for him by reminding him of that loss or pain. He's able to act almost like himself but he's still not being fully healed or back to where he was before. He doesn't know where to start explaining his pain, perhaps thinking that whoever he's addressing will be hurt by or won't understand why he's still upset or not right.
I agree. My visual is a party he's attending with his new love and runs into the lost love. Everything is bright, but he's coping with the memory he is always trying to push down. That line, "I'm almost me again, she's almost you," absolutely kills me, as does the line, "I laugh like me again, she laughs like you." I felt for the partner who is in love with someone capable of deep love but who views them as a fill-in for someone else.
I found hozier very unexpectedly and like most of the people who adore him and his work, by the song called "Take me to Church" but ever since that day i have only loved and cherished him more and more. I was not in a very happy place when i listened to this album, which was in last march i guess, but i remember being completely tear apart and formed into something new when i listenened to it. The song "Nina cried power" was my absolute favorite and then, as it is with all of hozier songs, i fell in love with all of the album so much that it became very dear to me. I always urged my friends to listen to his music so that i could discuss or dissect it with them. When "Eat your young EP" [again in march, this seems to be a recurring theme] i was very stressed, but his music, his art helped me stay afloat. I am so glad, that i found somebody who really gets it, who really analyzes the themes he sings about. Who appreciates him as much as i do.
I'm glad you did this. There's dearth of female music reviewers on this platform and even in general. I'd love to see more from you and even a recommendation of female music reviewers if you do know of great ones. It's women's month after all. We need to be heard!
There DEFINITELY is a big lack of female reviewers right now. It does seem like sometimes we aren't taken as seriously as male reviewers. There's kind of that "boys club" mentality. There are definitely some girls out there if you're into pop punk like Liz Rogers, but I've searched low and high for girls into the same music as me with no success, unfortunately!
@@honorluca Even movie reviewers! The one that I only know of that's quite known is Grace Randolph who I actually can't stand. I dunno where Roth Cornett is anymore I liked her. I'm sure if there are more women out there there'd be a variety of opinions and attitudes that would cater to certain audiences and enhance the general zeitgeist.
I don't know why i'm even doing a paper presentation on Wasteland, Baby! in a conference when this video literally exists and I should just project it sdhasdhaskjdh
tHIS ALBUM IT SO FKING GOOD, cant not listen. Absolutely love Movement, No Plan... right down the list. This music is so middle child, to most. But funny, this was the last of His 3 I got.
Aaahhh I'm late to the Party! I love Hozier, and I just watched your video on the 'Eat Your Young EP' and I had hoped you had one on 'Wasteland, Baby!' The first time I sang To Noise Making, I remember that was the first time I understood that song. I remember tearing up.
Be is one of my favorite songs from his entire discography, i know its somewhat nihilistic but it also feels so empowering! it feels like finding comfort and strength in that one constant in your life, despite knowing that everything else around you is crumbling.
I really liked your interpretation of No Plan in this video. I think it definitely makes sense when I listen to the song with that context in mind. I did have a different interpretation of the song on my first listen though. When I was listening to it it really hit me as just him finding a relationship that's peaceful. There's no agenda, no goal, No Plan. You're just existing together and experiencing what life has to offer together. As long as you support each other and are there for each other there's no need to be worried or rush through things, you can just be.
I think your interpretation is not that different from the reviewer. In my view Hozier is talking about the absolute end of the universe when everything goes dark (“as Mack explained there will be darkness again”). He argues that this is just inevitable and there’s no plan for what happens before that and no kingdom to come, as religion makes you think. So enjoy live while you can and don’t feel restricted by all kinds of religious or cultural rules, just be you, live life in the here and now and don’t let anybody dictate how you should do it. “Be be be be be, be as you’ve always been...” (It’s another song, but the message is quite the same, I guess).
@@carolinavanderlande4904 Yea I see what you're saying, I feel like my interpretation is just a bit more inward-looking, like it's painting a picture of a moment in time during a really good comfortable relationship where her interpretation looks at the same core ideas just broadens a bit more to this more grand scale end of the universe story being told. Both definitely very valid looks at a very similar idea from the song for sure
LMAO 😭I didn't even listen to the album and I am crying about how beautifully he writes/sings about love, women and society😢. I have to listen to this album. I need this excellence in my life
Thank you for your interpretation of this album. I have been listening to this album nonstop and just saw him in November. His music is so unique and his lyrics are impeccable. His music has become my medicine!!!
just a few years late but a few of us queueing hours early for a hozier show were trying to decide the best hozier song to do the macarena to, we did conclude it is movement
I’m a kind of a person when listening to a song for the first time im more focus on the rhythms or the beat first then i listen to the lyrics and i have to admit i don’t really understand them and maybe it’s because english is not my first language so it’s a bit gibberish when i listen to the lyrics but your video really open up something about the song and made it more meaningful and beautiful than just the beat and itself and i really like your take in this album and it really made me fall in love deeper to hozier’s work because he’s really an incredible artist and i thank you for that :)
tysm for making these and breaking down all of the songs! I started with the unreal unearth video and im so glad you have so much more hozier content! I've casually liked hozier for years but never really read into the lyrics but I loved the vibes. I started binge listening to him again and then he announced the second leg of unreal unearth so i got tickets and now I'm trying to understand all of his songs more and to a deeper level so thank you for helping me with that!
also i know im several years late to the party, but I recently wrote an analysis on would that I for a class and had a sort of difficult time breaking it down at first but ended up coming to a little bit of a different meaning, it’s interesting to hear other points of view though. I wrote about how it’s describing a relationship where he is so in love with this person who he’s comparing to a fire that’s completely destroying his life and everything he loves but he’s so enamored with her beauty and toxic love that he stays with her anyway
Fabulous review! For me the album is Hozier trying to deal with the new while learning how to deal with the old. In this case this does not only refer to past and new love but also the literal end of humanity as on the title track, Talk, and Be. I adore his poetry and his allusion to Greek mythology is so cool!
Funny to hear your opinion on "Nobody." It's probably in my top five Hozier songs lol, that one and Shrike are definitely two of my favorite on the album.
Just started getting into Hozier lately, even though I've known of him since Church, and I have literally consumed every song since Eat Your Young was announced. I found your channel through looking up stuff of his, and omg, I love your analysis of his stuff, and how you're giving it as a conversation with us, presenting ideas and thoughts and facts as "...and what do you think about it?" I love listening to you talk about all of this, and I hope you have a long and happy career on YT. :)
I just found you, and subscribed! Oh man you nail Hozier perfectly. So great! To the point and so much info. You're awesome! I so agree 100 % with all you say. Hozier is my all time favorite, and took over my many favorite bands. I've lived for live music since I was a child. Hozier was the most amazing concerts I've ever seen. Not one mistake that I could detect. Perfection. Your great! Thank you
i’m not sure if you’ll see this since this video is a couple of years old now but i’ve been watching your videos on hozier and they’ve all really helped me appreciate his music more than i thought could even be possible
Very interesting review. I like your thoughtful interpretations a lot! I’m currently at a stage of exploring the album, but not too obessively, because I don’t want to overplay it. I noticed that, just like with his first album, I instantly like some songs and some others less. But that constantly changes. The “lesser” songs will grow on me and can even become new favourites. It’s kind of a journey that I don’t want to rush because who knows how long we’ll have to wait for the next release? Anyway, you gave me some food for thought for tomorrow morning when I drive to work listening to Wasteland, baby!
I find the exact same thing! I have an instant reaction to the songs I love but usually, ones that I originally didn't like as much become songs that mean the most to me. I'm so glad you found my review interesting, that's wonderful to know! Hope you enjoyed your drive to work x
Thank you, I did. I actually listened to Sunlight with your interpretation in mind. It is one of the songs that I haven’t delved into yet but the ‘ying-yang theme’ is definately there and it suddenly sounds quite different, which is interesting.
Carolina van der Lande I think something that was so interesting about Sunlight was the way it went back and forth from major to minor keys (which is seen in movement too) and it does support the songs idea of light and dark dancing with each other.
This video is amazing!! You put words to what I was feeling through the songs which is amazing! Please go in-depth with the songs because it’s so much more impactful when your really hear the music

The child in To Noise Making is Hozier as a kid.
Oh awesome! That makes me love the song even more haha
I sobbed so much the very first time i heard shrike. On top of that my first time was actually a live version onstead and you know how thay goes

this album is just so majestic and powerful. I honestly cannot express how much of musical genius this man is.
Right?! He's almost not of this realm haha
This is my favorite album of all time. I just relistened to it yesterday actually lol
Ooof. 'Almost' is so cute
Right?! It melts me
Please do a 45 min video of all 3 albums.
Great review! Very thoughtful :)
There's such a shortage of the reviews and reactions to Hozier material, ugh!
