I read in a book that TIP is an acronym for "To Insure Providence", originating in old English Monasteries. Monks were great brewmasters, and as such would provide drink and food. They would make 3 types of beer: one for charity (to give to the poor), one for purchase, and one for monks. The TIP box (then it was a wooden ) would fund their charity beer as well as help with the Monastery's needs, while the cost of the beer itself would cover production costs and further R&D (monks were obsessed with perfecting brews as they saw sub par beer as an offense to God). As the beer improved, they used the money to further experiment with more expensive ingredients as well as research techniques into mass producing. With all the money they would make, the Monasteries would fund other endeavors as well such as hospitals and libraries, which is why Monasteries were known to be great centers of knowledge. Once pubs and similar establishments began to open by non monks, they kept the concept.

The owners do pay their employees, so it's not like they are in need of tips. I agree, unless it's a barber or actual waiter, it's stupid and it's just tacky. If I was a business owner, I wouldn't let employees do that

    • @JoeJacksonGT3
      @JoeJacksonGT3 5 ปีที่แล้ว +36

@@morganfreeman5972 it has nothing to do with being nice. He's asking for a reason as to why he should tip someone that checked them out while he got out of his car, walked into the restaurant and waited at the counter. All that person did was take it from the kitchen and used a cash register...no tip for you!

    • @noidbusta1

I don't tip all that often, but that's because I can't afford to eat out all that often.
That said, one of my favorite restaurants is Subway and I usually leave at least a dollar bill if there is a tip jar. Why? At many Subways you are tipping the person who made your sandwich....and I have seen some do a "slapdash" job, and others do a great job. I even went so far as to compliment the person who made a Subway salad once because it was much better tasting than I thought it would be.
The "latest thing" is leaving a tip for your motel chambermaid....that one leaves me conflicted. It is the person's job, but if they did a better than average job?

I won't be told HOW MUCH to TIP, as brings it is by how one is as your waitress/waiter. I mean , REALLY, a waitress.waiter can be a really bad one, or extremely ruder and I am to be FORCED to TIP THEM, and a SPECIFIC AMOUNT. NOT EVER going to HAPPEN. My Siblings and I are very compassionate of HARD working waitresses/waiters and one's dedication making their patrons time of going out for a meal a very relaxing time and will do their very best of being great service to you, and is always pleasant or may be really trying to be as they made have had a more than un-usual very trying day and of a or some patrons earlier, or even that same time as been servicing you.We are very understanding of having such a job as that is as well as it is a very hard working job as also having to be on one's feet ALL DAY and all over the place all day long we DO show our great appreciation for all they do and ENDURE from such awful patrons who treats them as though they are their SERVANT. One of our Uncles TREATED EVERY person at every TYPE of PLACE as his EMPLOYEE. YES, he would tell super-market cashiers even "You are working for me", As we would start to leave I would stay behind some seconds and apologize to them for the way he had spoken to them and treated them. One time it was THE VERY LAST STRAW. When I got in the automobile I was so furious and so appalled how he just would not stop treating people like that. He FULLY well knew why I was so angry, though he pt on this whole "Hey, what's the matter?" When we got back to our Grand-Dad's an Grand-Ma's house my Sister had already arrived just earlier as we were gone, and as soon as she saw my face she asked "Why is she angry, at did you do?" "I don't know, I did not do ANYTHING" is what he said to her. She told him "No, you did something, look at her she is really mad at you for something you did or said, and I know how you are, so, tell me what you did or had said that has made her so angry at you that she won't even speak to you or anyone. I have never seen her this angry". SUDDENLY everything just SPILLED out of mouth as I just was started telling everything talking VERY LOUD and could not even stop to catch my breath. She turned towards him started speaking so very loud and angry at him saying "I knew you did something to have made her angry, she has never so angry like she is now". Acting like you did not do anything, I KNEW you had to have done something or had said something".

lol the first part I agree with STRONGLY, but the second part ouch haha I work at Baskin Robbins and there is soooo much to that part time minimum wage job it’s basically maid service combined with food service. Not to mention building and decorating custom flavored cakes while helping customers. My dad was like “I have to agree.” -_- I can understand the anger gen X and baby boomers have over tip jars but for sure I know for a fact the generations after me will once in a while be getting tips from me because I completely understand the frustrations of college life while working a minimum wage job. And no I don’t feel responsible or obligated to tip, just empathetic. The tip money actually helped me buy books for college! I never did get to experience the typical Hollywood partying at the dorms kind of life, everyone at CSULA is quite middle class and working to move upwards. It’s just the way it is today. I always thank my customers who I recognize have handed tips and returned to our location because they contributed to my future 💫 🎓 👨‍🎓 truly a great amount of customers are total sweet hearts, and then of course there is the occasional ultra rude and spoiled one too.

I've never put money in a tip jar. Anywhere there is a tip jar there is someone who is just doing what they are supposed to, nothing more. I don't even know why I tip my barber. Did I get an extra good cut today? Or do you want money because you ask me how my day was going?

For a service, some jobs are paid a lesser wage and you're supposed to have input on how much they earn, based on how well you think they did their job. This benefits you, good employees, and the management. Bad employees get bad tips, which combined with their lesser pay, incentivizes them to move on to new job.

@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 I think you missed my point. Its pretty rare that I see what I would call good or bad service. Its almost always "adequate" which is all I expect. You go into subway and they make your sandwich the same way they make everyone else's. I pay the price and I leave. Nothing special about it at all.

Starbucks, crosses the line with their tip jars. If coffee were just $3-4 no issue tipping a dollar, now a good coffee blend is $5-6 and if you want syrup oh dear another $.65 It’s bullshit.

There are even tip buckets on some drive through restaurants, at the window. Uh, no. No.
A tip is appropriate when used to ensure a certain level of service that the boss can't monitor. To make sure the waitress comes by your table often enough.. etc.
NOT FOR BEING A CASHIER AND HANDING ME WHAT I PAID FOR, OVER A COUNTER, or out a damn drive through window.
If a pizza man drives to your house and brings you food, then he deserves a tip for his trouble. Imagine a waiter driving all the way to your house.
If I drive somewhere and pick up my own food, then there's no service occurring that requires a tip.

I went to a place where you order at the counter, you pick up at the counter, and you throw away your own trash and when you pay with a card they ask for a tip.

The worst is when some people at restaurants or delivery people give you shitty service cuz they EXPECT the tip. And these others EXPECTING tips with their jars when they’re not even serving you at your table & you cleaning up table yourself. Lots of jobs pay minimum wage unfortunately, but the employees don’t have tip jars. Just like go-fund-mes.
