Have you tried doing a rubbing (piece of paper over top then shading with pencil)?

Take a paper put on top and take a pencil and scrape it on the paper in the image will come through on the other side then you got a better chance to read it we used to do this as kids I know you know how to do that

I luv mystery pieces lol. It's definitely a "slide lid wooden box". Looks like V J Hein but the bottom lettering, which is really hard to read, probably gives more clues as to what the box originally contained. I'm guessing it might have held a deck of cards or even match sticks. It looks very primitive so I doubt it was a gift box for jewelry.
