Here is how I do it. Learning vocab is always difficult, doesn't matter what language it is. For me, this method is much more effective than learning words alone. Here is how I do it:
1 - Read the entire paragraph. I don't search for meaning of words, I just guess if from context.
2 - Read the whole thing again, but this time I search for each word, what does it mean. Why this sentence is constructed like this.
3 - Read again for third time, stopping to look at translation of word if needed.
4 - Read at fourth time, usually this is where entire paragraph is embedded in my head. So this is the last step.
5 - I make sure to reread old material every day as much as possible. This way it goes to my long term memory.

@@mariashevyrova3730 Reading sentences is less boring than memorising lone words. Go ahead try it out. And this might not work for everyone, but learning from sentences is much much easier for me than learning lonely words. I also remember them easily when I need to use them. Infact, right now I just stopped learning lone words. I always read and read again. Its easier and faster also.

this is how i learned farsi in just over a year. if you think about the way you read books as a kid, usually you read your most favorite bedtime stories over and over. Your brain was actually learning how to read this way, and learning words in context. this is a very natural way to learn vocabulary.

I just want to share my experience in learning English as a second language. My mother tongue is Chinese. I was around 10 when I hardly knew English any more than the alphabet and some simple words. I was fortunate to have an aunt, who was a teacher, to get me a part-time tutor who could spend one hour with me each week. Obviously with so little time made available she could not teach me much in the traditional way. What she did has made me forever grateful.
She listed a series of books of abridged English stories and novels, and made me read them, with some strict rules: first, finish one book a week regardless of its length; second, do not translate or make any annotations; third, do not use a dictionary; fourth, ignore details; and fifth, report back to her by the next week the main theme or essence of the story, in English.
She told me to scan through each book from cover to cover once quickly, return a second time to the beinning and read through the book again slowly, and then if I wanted to, go back a third time to where I wanted to understand more.
I struggled through the first dozen of books and gradually I was able to figure out the meaning of new words, expressions, styles and nuances. She remained my tutor for about six months. After that I went through the whole school library in my first year of high school.

I'm Chinese too and have read roughly 10 English story books. It's a joyful and fruitful time if goes on a "heart flow" which means reading without perceiving the time. It has helped me a lot. All it started when I watched a video about "Comprehensible Input" on Bilibili. But verb conjugation still confuses me a lot 😂

Thy channel has proved essential to enhance my learning speed, thank thee and congrats 1000!
I am not a "classical" polyglot, actually I write rhyming poetries in several languages (now I am at 9), usually learning 2 languages each year. Now I am self-teaching Latin and Japanese, looking for Middle English and Tolkien's Sindarin in the future.
But thou have helped me in several fields:
    - Improving vocabulary swiftly: rhymes are the most natural and immediate things, but I need vocabulary to start.
    - Grammar: it has always been my weak spot. But I have followed thy steps to improve day after day. Patience is the best counsel!
Therefore, congrats for all what hast thou done 😊

Now I'm learning Japanese and Latin; I'm trying to encompass them simultaneously (it might be a sick idea though, idk 😅). Vocabulary is ok, rhymes already acquired, grammar quite a pain (I'm slow in that field).
I leave Middle English for future.
Any idea is welcome, thank you.
Anyway, good luck for your study and all! (I suppose you are also self-teaching)

Great explanation. Just made a video on this very topic that I think complements this presentation very well. Want to forget less and remember more? Watch and listen to as much English as you can, and make speaking or writing in English a weekly (or in best of cases a daily) habit. That's the "natural" way. If you want a "trick" figure out how to counteract the "forgetting curve" (really interesting concept I'd encourage learners to look into if they're curious). Good stuff Zoe!

your are the only one youtuber that i’m really excited to watch video you launch.
😊 my fav method is association and sum up what i learned from a videos, podcasts, music, games…
but even you make up associations and stories in your head/ mental palace , you must go over and use them as much as you can.
the only problem i have is, when i watch a video for exemple i pick a lot of unknow sentences and my list is so long , that i can’t go over and use all of them, how do you go through that, i know it’s just simply to pick up fewer words but i have the perfectionnist syndrome ( idk if i can use syndrme here sorry)

Hi, Zoe. I recently came across your channel and have been loving all the great information you've been sharing. I'm learning two languages at the moment and wish to learn each of them to mastery. Please do a video on how physical excercise helps the brain improve cognitive ability and learning. I, for one, love working out and have found following a regular workout routine to improve my health, mood, and mental well-being in a number of ways. Keep up the great work!

Honestly, I've been neglecting studying words in Spanish & I wanted to know am effective way. I'll try the story method. It's sounds like a great way to study the past tense.

This method of creating crazy associations for the vocab is the best. When trying to learn the Russian word for valley, which is "dolina", I created a visual association with a certain infamous character named Dollynho ("little Dolly") dancing inside a valley.
BTW, Zoe, was there ever a time you coudn't remember an Arabic word, but you attempt to start writing it and it turns out the shape of the word just pops out of your hands? As if your mind and muscles remember the word shape subconciously.

Hello Zoe your channel is entirely amazing, I love it so much it makes me feel motivated to put a lot of effort into learning languages, well I'm 16 years old, my mother tongue is Arabic and learned English for 3 years and now I'm learning Spanish and French, I hope to master them and speak them professionally, I'm also interested in learning more such as Japanese, Chinese, Korean, German, Italian, Russian, Turkish ect, but I should focus on French and Spanish first, my goal should be realistic and measureble, 😊, although I can't travel or even take private classes online with teachers, but I will be patient and hard working, good luck for everyone 😇
Merci beaucoup pour ton videos Zoe

If there's an emotional trigger you always remember the vocab very clearly. I used to write new vocabulary I heard in audio books with their sentence. I always have some kind of flashback into the book story when I hear these words
