The lake levels have been way up for the past three years. They're down a bit this summer from last summer. The lake levels are a result of how much it rains in the Great Lakes watershed. @@MichiganRocks oops yes, sorry.... the one in Cross Village with the rocky boat launch. In the beginning of August I was up in Petoskey and did pretty good finding Petoskey stones at Petoskey State Park. I drove up to Fisherman’s Island State Park to check it out. It was so beautiful, but just gray on gray rocks. Lots of imbedded Petoskey stone, like you found at Magnus. But not really any colors to speak of.
@@ModernDayPilgrim What do you find on the Cross Village beach? A couple other people said they like it there too. I thought the rocks were a bit blah, but I didn't give it much of a chance. There was only so much time in the day, and I wanted to get to Petoskey.
@@MichiganRocks most of the rocks I get from there are the bigger ones. I wish I could send you a picture. I use them in my landscape. Although, if you go left at the “rock dock” LOL and travel all the way around the bend on the beach, there is a lot of beach that isn’t as picked over. The colorful rocks are the bigger ones which I do collect and bring home. I also have a video up of my landscape with the rocks from there. It’s a simple display. I’m not an over the top landscaper... lol. But I had to do something with all these. I currently have two buckets of rocks that I am getting ready to use in my landscape. I don’t tumble yet. My hubs says I should. Maybe I will. I’m not experienced in that field and have no idea what to get or what I would need. I have to do a little research. But anyhow, have you been to the beach in GoodHeart? You passed through there on 119.
@@ModernDayPilgrim When you decide to get a tumbler, let me know and I'll help you pick one out. Is the Goodheart beach the one by the old church? If so, we went there last summer, but it was mostly sand. My wife and her parents were with me, so we didn't walk too far. Nice beach if you like sand though.
It's a fossilized coral from the Devonian Period somewhere around 360 million years ago. The scientific name is Hexagonaria. It's also the state stone of Michigan.
Congratulations Nancy on your retirement. Bad news for us rockhounders though. Bad enough with Rob, but with the two of you rock hounding, I imagine the Petoskey stone will hit the endangered species list, Chris and Lisa
I don't think Nancy will be out much more than she was before. She has always had summers off, so her time available for rockhounding won't be much different.
Great video. Looks very relaxing for you both. You have made me a very picky rock collector too 🤣 I think I need to take a smaller bucket out with me. Beautiful lake.
Lovely video. Congratulations on your retirements, and thank you for being teachers. It is difficult, important work that is seldom compensated adequately. I ended up retiring a year early because of COVID, so I never really got to experience my last year of teaching. I guess I did experience it, but I didn't know it was my last year. It happened sort of suddenly. I think a job would be much less stressful if you could go in each day knowing you could quit whenever you wanted to.
Great video as always! I always enjoy seeing all of the cool fossils in your area. Usually the most interesting things I find a Mary Ellen jasper and shell impressions.

Looks like you and Nancy had a great time NOT having to go to school! I’ve got a few years before I can miss the first day of school to do something fun. :) We didn’t have as much luck finding Petoskey stones in Petoskey, MI. I’m guessing it is because we just went to a couple of public beaches. You mentioned the Petoskey stones can be different on Lake Michigan than on Lake Heron. Are they all hexagonaria or are they different species type of coral?
Public beaches right in Petoskey are probably some of the worst places to look for Petoskey Stones. I kind of wanted to document some of those spots for people looking for beaches to go to. Petoskey Stones are the fossil Hexagonaria. There are nine different species of hexagonaria, according to Wikipedia. The Petoskey Stone is Hexagonaria Percarinata, but most people call all Hexagonaria "Petoskey Stones". I can't tell the difference between most of them. There is a lot of Hexagonaria in both Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. I'm not sure if Hexagonaria Percarinata is in both lakes or not. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hexagonaria
I have plenty of spots I still want to hit in the state, but I'm not opposed to traveling farther. I'm not sure Nancy wants to spend our travel time looking for rocks though. She is not as enthusiastic about long rock hunts as I am. She's ok for shorter excursions.
@@MichiganRocks That’s because you’ve been letting everyone know where to go! I had a good day at Leland today-found an awesome pudding stone. Yesterday I found an agate at the Point Betsie Lighthouse.
No, I went right behind the store. there’s little gazebo sort of thing there and I went down next to that. if there was a sign saying not to go there, I totally missed it. There are always a few other people on the beach there too.

Beautiful water and scenery
Oh good another turtle. Congrats on both retirements. Have fun. Enjoyed the beautiful water and scenery.
Another turtle?
@@MichiganRocks yes, another turtle. I remember the adorable turtles you made from Petoskey stones. You found the useable shape this trip.
@@rosalindhendricks6337 Ok, I thought that might be what you meant, but I wasn't sure.
Congratulations, well earned. Enjoy your time together!
Thanks!
Nice beach comb.
Enjoy your retirements
Thanks, Lorret!
So what exactly is a Petoskey stone? How was it formed? Is it actually a type of coral? Thanks for sharing 🤗 Congrats Nancy!! and cute shirt 😃
Congratulations! Good for both of you!
Thanks, Anne!
Congratulations 🎉
Great video.
Looks very relaxing for you both.
You have made me a very picky rock collector too 🤣 I think I need to take a smaller bucket out with me.
Beautiful lake.
I keep bringing a five gallon bucket, but I don't know why. I need to scale down too.
Yes I had a giggle at your bucket.
@@nicolagraynewzealandrockho8976 I'm an optimist.
At least when Nancy blew out her “flip flop” she didn’t step on a pop top and have to cruise on back home. 🏝
Beautiful day and nice video too.
She did sort of cruise back to the Jeep soon after. She also had a margarita at lunch.
Congratulations to your retirement.
Thanks, Denise!
@@MichiganRocks you’re both welcome.
Lovely video. Congratulations on your retirements, and thank you for being teachers. It is difficult, important work that is seldom compensated adequately. Did you end up keeping that little crinoid stem? I thought that was one of the most unique things you found this trip. I also look forward to seeing your polish on Nancy's Favosites find.
No, I left the crinoid stem there. I wasn't sure what I would have done with it.
Beautiful area you live in.. awesome on the retirements..I can retire in a yr but not sure if I'm ready yet ..it's nice to know it's my call from now on tho..great rocks !! I'd want to keep them all..lol
I ended up retiring a year early because of COVID, so I never really got to experience my last year of teaching. I guess I did experience it, but I didn't know it was my last year. It happened sort of suddenly. I think a job would be much less stressful if you could go in each day knowing you could quit whenever you wanted to.
You both look so happy, enjoy 😉
Thanks!
Great video as always! I always enjoy seeing all of the cool fossils in your area. Usually the most interesting things I find a Mary Ellen jasper and shell impressions.
Obviously I like Petoskey Stones a lot, but that favosties at 15:32 was really cool. I'm hoping that one polishes up well.
@@MichiganRocks That will be super cool if it does!
Congratulations! on the retirement. My wife and I are headed to Alpena to rockhound this weekend. We're Hoosiers.
That’s ok that you’re Hoosiers, we’ll still allow you to collect a few rocks. Good luck, and have fun.
@@MichiganRocks Any NON Secret beaches for some decent Unikite? Asking for a friend, lol.
@@kennethwright87 I can't think of a beach around Alpena that has lots of unakite. I have hunted at Thompson's Harbor. I'd park here: goo.gl/maps/GjNXPVaiejh2pcA19 and walk across the river right at the mouth. I have hunted here twice and found unakite both times. Here are the two videos:

@@MichiganRocks Thank you for the tip. We found a few pieces at Thompsons. Also visited Rockport, Seagull Point and Sturgeon Point. Thanks again!
Hi Rob and Nancy and congrats on your retirements :) I wanted to climb through that screen a few times ,especially when you picked up the chert :) I just bought a piece of Australian jasper . Nancy I just went for a walk a few days ago and though my shoe didn't break....I do not advise wearing open back shoes trail walking lol. Thanks for sharing your day with me I loved the beach and the travel there equally :)
We went for both reasons. We both enjoy going for a drive once in awhile.
Happy Retirement to you both! What a great way to celebrate Nancy's first day of no work. I enjoyed seeing the beautiful buildings along your way and the tunnel of trees looks really neat. Rock stretcher! 😆 Where can I get one? Thank you for sharing your day.
I think they sell the rock stretchers right near the bonfire smoke shifters.
@@MichiganRocks I think you're right! 🤣
Magnifique endroit très belle prospection bravo
Je vis dans un bel état et je suis vraiment reconnaissant.
Ever try Peterson Park on the Leelanau peninsula for Petoskey stones?
Yes, Nancy and I went there last summer. th-cam.com/video/VGSHOzH5TEs/w-d-xo.html
Ah, that beach in Petoskey is my home away from home. Spent many many weeks at the Tannery Creek condos just to the north side of the market!
The one behind D&W Market or Mangus Park?
@@MichiganRocks park at this spot then head SW along the beach until the beach ends near Reed St.
@@victorluc66 I'm not sure where "this spot" is. I tried to find Reed St. in Petoskey, but I don't think there is one.
I always learn something new on your channel. I had never heard of a Charlevoix stone before! Very nice!
It's the fossil "favosites", another coral fossil.
Now you guys can venture away from Michigan, for some world wide rock hunting.
I have plenty of spots I still want to hit in the state, but I'm not opposed to traveling farther. I'm not sure Nancy wants to spend our travel time looking for rocks though. She is not as enthusiastic about long rock hunts as I am. She's ok for shorter excursions.
@@MichiganRocks well you should at least hunt for Mexican Crazy Lace while visiting Mexico, it's on the same hemisphere as Michigan.
@@powerlinekid4296 Wouldn't that be fun?
You two are so blessed...retirement and off we go......and I wanna know where did Nancy get that tshirt? I need one! lol
Looks like you had fun!
We had a great day!
Now I need to check out the D&W. We had pretty good luck at Magnus Park a few weeks ago. Enjoy your retirement!
There were more people behind the market than I have seen before. It was much better in the early spring ten years ago.
@@MichiganRocks That’s because you’ve been letting everyone know where to go! I had a good day at Leland today-found an awesome pudding stone. Yesterday I found an agate at the Point Betsie Lighthouse.
@@joyceknitsandsews Yeah, I guess I could be to blame. Oops. I found an agate at Point Betsie this summer too! That was a surprise.
@@MichiganRocks I remember that video! We should start a club!
Went behind D&W in Petoskey and it said Tannery Creek no access to beach private property. Did you access from end of Hampton Rd?
No, I went right behind the store. there’s little gazebo sort of thing there and I went down next to that. if there was a sign saying not to go there, I totally missed it. There are always a few other people on the beach there too.
First in a new Rocks in a Docks series?
Ha! I like that!
congrats on retirement enjoy
Thanks, Greg.
