Chris' Favorite Pen/Ink/Paper Combos - Episode 1

  • In this video I show you one of my favorite Pen/Ink/Paper combinations: Noodler's Lexington Gray on CVS Caliber Paper in a TWSBI Go Fine nib! This is the first of an ongoing weekly series of videos where I will be showing you my favorite combinations I've found over the past 3 years.
    Gray is a favorite note taking (and process journaling) ink color of mine since it is neutral and I can add in other colors for underlining, highlighting, and contrast paragraphs and it still looks nice. Noodler's Lexington Gray is a bullet proof ink that dries fairly fast on this paper and looks gray not too dark not too light. It flows super well on this paper and feels smooth even in this Fine TWSBI nib.
    In the video, I show a bath test of the CVS Caliber paper with the Noodler's Lexington Gray and also I show you other options in this same paper.
    I'd love to hear about your favorite Pen/Ink/Paper combinations! I've got several more of mine I'm eager to share with you in this ongoing series!
    Thank you for watching!

      Hi Tammy -- oh yes the CVS Caliber paper is quite amazing! Always check for "Made in Vietnam" on any of the paper you get and it is more fountain pen friendly.

    Another great series! I think the TWSBI GO is the best quality pen you can find for the price - I have one in each nib size and, except for the EF, they perform beautifully. I look forward to the next installment. Thanks, Chris.

      Hi Sue - I'm truly hoping they make the Go pen in more colors - purple, especially! I have 2 of them with Broad nibs and they are my best writing pens with only the nib from Australia that came on my first Serendipity even competing! :)

    Thank you for this series. I watched this video the other day.The Caliber notebooks that you mentioned are really great. I happened to be at CVS this afternoon, and bought one of the Caliber notebooks that you mentioned. What a great notebook. It is truly fountain pen friendly. I never would have thought an inexpensive notebook like that would work so well with my fountain pens. Again, thanks for the series. It is so informative.

    I'm going to love this series. I'm going to use your format to keep track of my own favorite combinations. I may not have exactly the same inks, papers or pens as you or the next person, but the way you show how the relevant information is gathered and kept for reference will be invaluable

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Helen - I'm so glad this resonates with you! I used to use loose paper to run writing test but now I find that smaller notebooks of the paper work really well so that I don't lose them and they don't get destroyed - I have quite a few notebooks full or filling up!!! Also, if you have a paper type you'd want to see please let me know - if I don't have any I'll get some!

    I'm late commenting so I can only echo what everyone else has said - great idea for a series! And I know you've made notes over the years of pen/ink/paper (pip?) combinations that work or don't work for you. I really enjoyed this video and can't wait to see more.

      Hi Donna - thank you! I like focusing in on specific combinations that seem to work really well. I get in trouble when I think in general terms about ink brands or even pens. The magic seems to be in getting the combination of all 3 elements just right! :) PIP I like that!!!!

    Hi Chris, that's a nice combo. I really like that Lexington Grey - wow, it didn't budge in the water test and it looks good too! I've never tried any of the Noodler's inks, but I'd like to get a nice water resistant ink at some point. I like this style of video since I'm only just starting to learn how important it is to have a pen, ink, and paper that perform well together.

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi gadgetstop321 - I love Noodler's Inks! I have more Diamine inks but then Noodler's is the next most popular with me brand on my ink shelf! I had put off getting the Lexington Gray for a long time but it turned out to be such a great match for my CVS notebooks -- I just couldn't be without it! Oh yes, it's dramatic the difference just 1 variable out of the 3 can make ... an ink I LOVE on one paper in a specific nib can turn out to be a disaster on another ... that was a big discouragement during my first few years back in the hobby!

    Love this series idea. I don't go to CVS often but I've been meaning to stop by to get some of the caliber paper. There are some dollar general writing pads I like but they have to be the ones that say made in Indonesia. They are $1 each but they don't always have those. The stenos made in Indonesia are also good.

      Hi Michael - I'm testing out the iScholar Writing Tablet from Dollar Tree - I tend to like the CVS Caliber Tablet better but that's because I favor very Broad and stub nibs for letter writing. Still, the paper in the Dollar Tree tablets can't be beat for price!

    Great series idea! I want to get a TWSBI Go but can’t decide on the nib size. I haven’t purchased a TWSBI yet but am interested in the Go and the Eco.

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the one thing I wish was easier with the TWSBIs -- nib changing -- the feeds are fragile and I can't bring myself to pull them out. I love both the Eco and the Go but I find the Go more comfortable to write with and easier to clean and maintain.

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Selah - this is the video where I talked about it most: th-cam.com/video/QeZugKInkx0/w-d-xo.html Basically, my process notebook is one where I have permission to be messy and scrawl out notes and whatever I want. I use it closely with my bullet journal - but for me - I like to keep my bullet journal less personal and more like a planner/documenting my days. If that makes sense. :) Glad the new series is interesting to you!

    Thank you Chris . I wish i could get those notebooks but I've not found any in the uk. Lexington Grey also is an ink Id like to try because of its waterproofness makes it ideal for envelopes & such.
    I'm on a no spend still so , i did put it on my christmas list but my family are muggles with the exception of my Sister who is slightly less muggly , anyway i didn't get it . :-(

      Hi Matthew - I will send you a sample of the paper -- some people have said I'm nuts for liking it so I know it's not for everyone - and the ink/pen choice makes all the difference. I'm experimenting with other paper that says "Made in Vietnam" and finding out it's not all created equally too! I wish I understood more about paper making!!!! :)

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark - what nib size and what ink are you using? if you don't mind my asking. I do know that sometimes the nibs vary in their tipping material amounts and line width ... however I have not had that issue with any of my TWSBI Go pens so far.

      Chris Saenz I never bought my first Fountain Pen yet. To be honest I really wanted to buy a used pen off somebody but I don’t know anyone who uses fountain pens. Not really sure what NIB size I would like... I write big and small at times... depends I guess what kind of mood I’m in. I heard starting off with a F, or M is a good place to start

    Fine nib. Diamine aurora borealis.

    • @ChrisSaenz13
      @ChrisSaenz13  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark - I've only had one fine nib from TWSBI and I gave the pen away. No matter what ink I used I wasn't happy with that pen (nib) it was a TWSBI Eco T. But then later I learned that I could have used some brass shim material to open the nib up a bit and tune it myself to make it flow better. This is something I have not yet tried with a "nice" pen like a TWSBI but I plan to eventually. What I always do is clean a pen and fill it with an ink I've had a lot of success with in other pens to test things out - for me that ink is Rohrer & Klingner Cassia. That ink is saturated and flowy and for me I can tell if a pen acts up with that ink -- it's likely the pen/nib and not the ink. I've had great results with Diamine Aurora Borealis in a Medium TWSBI nib. I hope this helps a little. I'm by no means an expert - I just keep experimenting and seeing what works! There are so many things that affect the writing experience especially pen (nib really), ink and paper.
