For the people wondering why duplets are there… they indicate straight 8s. The normal 8th notes are swung. It’s normally better to indicate occasional straight notes in swing with duplets rather than text above the staff. Text above the staff also implies that the whole band changes swing style, which doesn’t happen.

Have you seen the video of the Wynton Septet playing "The Death of Jazz (The New Orleans Function)" at Dizzy's? Opens with a great Wycliffe bit that I've always wanted to transcribe but never found the time. Little more spooky, not quite as "fat"... but it is that time of year after all 👻

For those curious, Wycliffe is playing with a plunger mute, with another mute underneath (maybe a pixie, a trumpet straight mute, or something else, I can't exactly tell here). He's also humming/singing, just as close as you can come to growling into the trombone to produce that unique sound. He's amazing live, and he has an absolutely BEAUTIFUL sound, open or with a mute. Other trombone players (and trumpet players!) have been doing it since the 20s. You can hear other examples in these videos:
-Joe "Tricky Sam" Nanton, the absolute master of the plunger. No one has replicated his sound since: th-cam.com/video/qDQpZT3GhDg/w-d-xo.html (solo at :53)
-You can hear influences in the modern day, like this example from Cuphead: th-cam.com/video/nxB2K9l6S6E/w-d-xo.html (solo at 1:19)
-Charles Mingus' Black Saint and the Sinner Lady has many examples. But especially this part at 32:45 is absolutely wild, moving with such intense emotion: th-cam.com/video/zFA0FYQo0Gg/w-d-xo.html

@@Oli.V Wycliffe's in particular, I'm not too sure, but I think it's the real thing. But you can buy a plunger just from the store, and use it that way, which is what I do! They also have mutes in the general shape of a plunger, made specifically for the trombone, usually at a more expensive cost
