7th Place: Prelude Op. 11 No. 22 G Minor by Alexander Scriabin
This video features Natalya Sekerina, to whom Scriabin wrote this poem ("Romance"):
Were I by sweet dreaming
To dwell within thy soul,
Were I to turn thy fair head
To great thoughts of creation,
I would, dear friend,
Reveal to thee
A universe of delight.
Scriabin proposed to her more than once, actually. He reported he was engaged to her when he was ~20 years old (she was 15...they did things differently in those days), but Natalya's mother forbade the marriage. Curiously, at his insistence, Natalya's mother ended up helping deliver love letters between them. The last time he proposed to Natalya (in 1894), she told him, "I am not marrying you, because I love you less than I did at first." 😨 This prelude makes me think of how Scriabin may have felt in response to that rejection. Natalya later wrote, “That beloved man could never have had happiness, if I had been afraid to say ‘no’ to him. And what kind of wife would I have made him, a genius? My subconscious truly pointed the right path and led me to a correct decision.”
Like the previous video, I recorded this one before in my old "top 4 Scriabin" video, but in this performance I re-interpreted the climax to follow the score more closely. Also, this one has better mics and mic placement that give a more natural sound and wider dynamic range. In any case, let me know what you think!
