This song is about the way life can feel so tough sometimes for many reasons including grief, loneliness and despair; yet somehow we make it through and things will be ok. Even through your darkest times, sometimes a little bit of sunshine (joy) will poke through the clouds.

I didn't realize until reading your explanation that the UK celebrates Mother's Day in March, as opposed to the USA,where the observance is on the second Sunday in May.
