    Awesome, once again. I love that you show your experiments and failures as well as successes. That is very helpful to us beginners. I tried the blue/red LED grow lights and found the plants grew slower too, compared to an LED daylight flood light in reflector (they were on sale at Ace Hardware). But it seems the plants do better with both since I combined them, so I focused the blue/red on the central stem areas and then daylight a little higher (leaves were getting dried out with it too close, in spite of having a fan there) and now my plants seem much more productive and much happier. I also put 3 full length door mirrors on the walls of the white shower, so they get some bounce going. So far I have a zucchini, tomato, green bean, and lettuces in 5 gallon buckets (Kratky system), that were started under a T5 flourescent and put in the buckets as soon as the roots poked through the rockwool cubes. They all doubled in size after 1 day in the buckets, under those lights. The cat decided the zucchini stem looked delicious and tried to chomp it in half, so he is now banned from shower plant inspection (luckily he listens when I yell "Ehh!"...zucchini saved).

      Cryptopolis: fair question, LOL. The plants are in the guest shower. I don't want any guests anyway, so it works for me! There are NO plants in MY bathroom...yet...but even if there were, they wouldn't get the shower or sink space. Unless I decide to hang some orchids from the ceiling of the shower...hmmmm...and maybe a fern....yeah...and then I could get a fishtank toilet bowl and make an aquaponics tray to go over the fishtank part...YEAH! LOL

      only mylar is good for reflecting light. Also emergency blankets, while not as effective as mylar, are cheap yet still very effective. Actual foil can start a damn fire. Emergency Blankets are made to be fire proof. They don't catch fire easy as their not easily flammable.

    Try covering the inside of the bucket with aluminum foil so it reflects light back at the plant. That would make the light more even and reduce losses. Space buckets usually do that.
    I'm setting up one in a trash can, and I found spray glue worked well to attach the foil.

    10+ years ago i DIY'd grow lights w/ red & blue 1W leds off ebay. they worked well
    for seedlings. now though , sept 2021 , i wouldnt think of doing DIY any more.
    oh , i will still use the 1W grids for seedlings. but after that its '2000' level or larger
    of fixtures to grow into flowering. expect to pay 150 to 300 dollars.
    depending on the size of your grow tent.
    the lm301b leds alone to buy individually vs a led fixture already built using them
    and a meanwell driver are so affordable. you'll save loads of time and get
    your growing groove going without all the construction mess & bother.
    there's enough work and thinking - planning awaiting you. and research
    for what plant physiologists have discovered with experimenting with
    photoperiods , light intensity and other enviro'l factors.
    these are variables from one plant to the next.
    prepare to be dazzled with what you find out. how plants can
    be induced in growing ways that dont follow from the millions of years
    of evolution on this planet.

    I went to Home Depot and saw those clip lamps. I'm trying to minimize costs for growing my succulents. Trying to decide if I should get the 8.5 inch lamp or the 5.5 inch lamp.
    Home Depot also sells a 2 foot fluorescent light fixture with T5 bulbs included specifically for use as a grow light, but that thing is $50. If I buy four 8.5 inch lamps and a four pack of those CFL bulbs, that's $43.82, plenty of extra money for a couple extension cords and an outlet timer to turn the lights off at night.

    hey jeb, consider if the cfl plant gets hotter it will transpire more and suck up more water with nutrients and maybe speed up his metabolism, i have been studying tomatoes plants and there are some problems based on how much the leafs transpired and the transport mechanism of nutrients. If you can measure lumens of those 2 bulbs and keep the Tº at kinda the same, your experiment will be perfect :D

    • @JebGardener
      @JebGardener  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes the heat can be (and definitely was) a problem. But basil likes a little warmth too. Could be useful for someone who wants to grow some herbs in a cold garage. I have a thermometer in my next grow so I should have less issues. Also the plant told me it was too hot when I saw the rippling in the leaves. Thanks!

    Awesome video, love the editing. Do you think lining the bucket with foil would help diffuse the cfl light?

    • @JebGardener
      @JebGardener  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I'm doing that on my next grow. It acts as a heat trap too so the light must be put a little higher.

    That LED should output roughly 3 times less light than CFL. Though CFL also outputs green light, which is mostly useless, that's about 40% of luminosity.

    • @JebGardener
      @JebGardener  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also the diodes are directional which can increase efficiency

  • @IWantToBeThatGuy

    The difference in growth is probably due to temperature. Heat does plenty of plants good. The hotter light just replicates all the aspects of sunlight better.

    But how do you grow a bucket? I've seem to run short. I'm very interested.

    • @JebGardener
      @JebGardener  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could grow a tree and cut it down and make a bucket

  • @lopsumtathro

    now try with a fruiting plant , the white cfl is awesome for vegetative growth but flowers and fruits need the red spectrum or a good mix of both .

    • @JebGardener
      @JebGardener  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll try more of that. My cilantro went to seed under the 6500k fluorescent.

    • @lopsumtathro
      @lopsumtathro 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes they will work , u can just use white/blue ,but try tomatoes , use blue/white till they bud then add some red, try a control with just white. A cfl warm white would be slight improvement . If you use them right the red leds are good. Just not for leafy growth. You should find the space between nodes is shorter with blue, red will make long gangling plants as you see, if used for leafy veg. Think in stages , growth stage , flower stage, fruit stage,seed stage each needs something different, as the sun has hues through the seasons.

  • @Zekian
    @Zekian 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Suggestion... use 4 of those LED lights so you're using the same amount of energy for each plant. Also it might be interesting to put the LEDs at a 45 degree angle, rather than over head... Happy growing.

    • @JebGardener
      @JebGardener  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be super cool! But it would be pretty costly for one basil plant. I'm using even more aluminum foil on my next grow so we should get better light utilization.

    • @Zekian
      @Zekian 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps a different suggestion then... A metalic bucket?

      You can never have too much aluminum foil. It stops the alien space reptiles from teleporting into your cerebral ventricles. They're very small.

    Jeb,
    A 5100K LED (which also produces a white, daylight simulated light) could replace the CFL in order to reduce the temp. Awesome video!
