Yeah, I saw the Chaos inflatables in the background. It's a nice nod to those little creatures in the games. Though it makes sense because Japan loves marketing cute animals.
Shadow's creation was based on an ancient mural (Found in Sonic 3 & Knuckles) prophesying Sonic and was made to cure a disease that the girl Maria had. So Gerald made a ton of prototypes (some being based on Chaos) and made the biolizard (Villain of Sonic Adventure 2). Shadow was eventually created and made friends with everyone on board till a Government Agency called G.U.N killing everyone on board (excluding Gerald who was taken into custody and later killed by firing squad, dark i know) and which they killed Maria
Without spoiling too much, Shadow was designed to be the ultimate life form by Dr Gerald robotnik. He's able to manipulate chaos, which is why he's so fast and strong
