Free Churro and Fish out of water have really good connections. Free Churro is an episode where bojack talks the whole episode, Fish Out Of Water is an episode where he doesn't speak most of the episode. Free Churro was about Bojack saying the stuff he knew, Fish Out Of Water was about Bojack learning to actually apologize. Both of these episodes are just 24 minute jokes with a really tight punchline in the end.

This episode has the one line that’s stuck with me long after I watched it. “All we have are the connections we make.” It hit me so hard at the time, it ended up being a big reason I started speaking to an old friend of mine that I really hurt, making amends and reestablishing our friendship. Funnily enough, I always thought it was too late to reach out to her, but then found that she was more than happy to talk to me again. Sometimes you really do have to appreciate those you’ve connected with in life, and try to reconnect when you can.

I could have a lot of awesome people in my life right now but refused to go down that path. now all I have are books and words, but none of them are ever said back to me.

lxs You can lift that label off of yourself whenever you would like to. I think the reason you are afraid of being social now is because you are scared your peers will find it weird how your are social all of a sudden and mock you for it. Thats why you said they label you as the “quiet kid”. But the only reason your quiet is because you accept that label! I know it’s scary to be judged by people you know because you have put them on a pedestal mentally and figuratively live or die by what they think of you, but if you never care what anybody else thinks and go out there and be who you wanna be you will never be embarrassed again. Whenever someone judges you always think to yourself “Who is this person to judge me? They don’t know anything about me.” And they definitely don’t because you said yourself you’ve never talked to most of them. Remember this though, Once you start being social, you cannot go back. Even if you hit a road block and have a really awkward interaction where you feel like everyone is laughing at you and they all think your a joke, act like you don’t care because if they see that, they will eventually stop because they feed off of reactions, when you don’t give them one and brush it off as if nothing happened they will get bored/humbled and give you mutual respect for respecting yourself enough to ignore their hate. Sorry about writing so much I just felt the need to get this off of my chest, I hope you take whatever you can from this message to use in your life and I hope you are successful in making your life change for the better.

I feel bad for bojack but then I think like “should I?” He tries so hard to change but he constantly turns to his toxic traits and reoccurring mistakes
I never realized the nicotine patches and vodka at the end were Bojack regressing to familiarity. My story-struxtured little brain saw it as, "Bojack went through a journey, and life is rewarding his good deed." The themes in this show are paramount, thank you for putting them to words.
I think there's other stuff in this episode that hasn't really been said still. Throughout Bojack's life, one thing has proven to make him happy: the idea of a happy family. He pictures a life with Charlotte where they've escaped celebrity life and raised a kid, he constantly jokes and denies his abusive childhood to try and reflect only on positives (for a while, at least), and he takes actions to pursue his idealized version of a family. This episode is a really well-done showcase of that, because his time spent around the baby seahorse is some of the happiest we've seen him, ever. There are troubles, sure, but Bojack is consistently happy that he's able to take care of this child. The end of his time with the baby speaks volumes too. He wants to step in, to get some sort of gratitude, one more happy moment with the kid he's just delivered to its parent, anything, but the moment the child is reunited with its family, they all cast him aside. They move on without him, just like Charlotte, and just like every other attempt he's had at a happy family. Once again, his inability to speak up casts away a chance to be happy, and though I'm not saying he would've adopted the kid or stolen it or anything, he'd have been a lot happier if he came in and got some recognition, maybe by joining them for the meal that was offered to him. I'm not the best at wording this stuff yet, but there's a lot of symbolism in the show that hints toward Bojack wanting to belong somewhere, and he pictures himself belonging in a happy family where he's a caring father and has a loving relationship, the exact opposite of what his parents were like. In the season 3 finale, I think there's a double meaning behind the field of horses. Of course there's the symbolism of him wanting to step away from celebrity life, to find meaning in smaller things and live in the moment, but I think he also enjoys seeing those horses because he wants to be among them, to be included in the closest thing to a family he can have. I realize I'm way late to the party but I only recently watched this show and I absolutely adore it, and through all the videos I've watched on it I haven't seen any addressing that his main source of happiness comes being part of a loving family.
I think that what makes this series so great is the fact that Bojack represents a person we are all afraid to become, he lets everyone down including himself, he constantly wants to do better but ultimately never really tries and he always makes the wrong choices, he's stuck in an endless loop, basically the moral of the story is Dont be like Bojack
Her character and performance are the reason I love the season 6 episode Angela so much. She's clearly a very good businesswoman, and both with Herb and signing off the rights to his show managed to convince Bojack to do something he really didn't want to.
@@thememeteamdream It is ironic but not really hypocritical. The news about Herb got out and she realized it'd affect the show's reception. She didn't fire her because she didn't want him to be gay but she fired him because the public doesnt want him to be gay.
@@greentaigo2552 I respectfully disagree. I think it is hypocritical of Angela. We ultimately don't know her personal opinion about Herb being gay or him being fired for it. She was likely closeted or discreetly saw a partner in the 90's. If she were forcibly outed like Herb she would have been fired too, especially since she was an executive. I'm not saying it would have been pragmatic for Angela to risk her job for Herb, especially if she didn't know him. But she facilitated a culture that actively discriminated against LGBTQ+ despite being a member herself. The threat of losing her career, Herb's firing being 'just business,' or public pressure doesn't negate that fact. If I were to guess, the writers wrote about Angela's partner/sexuality to show that she was in a much more vulnerable position professionally and personally than Bojack realized.

She does say herself, they were trying to sell the network to Disney, a family-oriented organisation in a far more socially conservative time; and it’s not just the issue of Herb’s sexuality, it’s also that he was caught in a sexual act, possibly implied to be public, resulting in a sex scandal. That scandal put that sale in danger. Even if Herb was straight, it would’ve. I think Angela’s reaction to the news indicates that she was aware of Herb’s sexuality and that she did feel some guilt about what came next, but there was no way she could save him from what came next. In order to achieve what her job needed, what her bosses wanted, Angela had to get rid of Herb. It didn’t matter how she felt or how she understood. Herb had to go.
After this episode, I was reminded when diane said, “I don’t think anyone is inherently good or bad, I just think you are what you do.” And the fact that this episode ties back into that theme is very powerful to me.

Beautiful analysis. The show explores a lot of awkward subjects and explores the human condition unlike any other story in any other medium has done so.
Out of all of the friendships that Bojack screwed up over the series, Kelsey is the one that hurt the most. Mostly because she was the only one that made him cry. Bojack NEVER cries, despite being deeply depressed.
Downer ending doesn’t really need a deep dive explanation. It’s 90% just an acid trip with only a few more subtle themes. Times arrow would be great, but I would prefer this episodes counterpart, Free Churo.
Bojack Horseman Is probably my favorite show. I've watched it over and over and I've realized so many things that make Bojack... Bojack. He's guilt ridden and never knows what to do, even though he's the one who puts himself into those situations. Bojack is Bojack and he makes mistakes yes but whenever he makes his all to often mistakes... he can never fix it.
Sebastian Clerey I just think it’s so rare for us to see Bojack the “small” mistakes he makes. Obviously when life-ruiningly bad things happen like with Penny or Sarah Lynn Bojack spirals into deep self hatred. But we don’t see him have the same level of remorse towards other people he’s wronged like PC or Todd or Kelsey. So watching him struggle with this was really refreshing and one of the moments that gives us hope for Bojack to become a better person. That coupled with the visual story telling and the bond Bojack makes with the seahorse baby is just so hopeful. I could go on and on about this episode lol. It’s not my absolute favorite in the series but it’s up there for sure

I was watching this, and had rewatched the show recently, and then I realized Charlotte was "dating" Herb and I missed that totally throughout my watches. I'm just wondering if there were hints, that I missed, that Herb was bisexual, or he was just using Charlotte as a cover to prevent from being outed as gay in the 90s? I know it's horribly off from the topic of the video, but I had to get it off my chest lol.
In the 80s being openly gay wasn’t as accepted in society. We don’t know for sure, it’s possible that Herb knew and was covering, it’s possible that he was still trying to convince himself that he wasn’t gay given the way the world would react, but Charlotte has a telling line in The Telescope, when she says she “Doesn’t think she is what Herb is looking for”
@@Johnny2Cellos Oh wow thanks man, I wasn't expecting to get a reply from you! Thank you very much! I lived through the 90s and I definitely knew that homosexuality wasn't accepted even in that time period (when Bojack Horseman actually takes place), and I guess I auto-accepted that Herb was dating Charlotte as a cover for his homosexuality. I'm actually on another rewatch of Bojack Horseman right now and still on season 1, I'll keep a look out for that line from Charlotte!
I actually think the show did a great job at subtly portraying Herb as gay! There were just so many miniscule hints, like how he's almost never seen touching or being slightly affectionate with Charlotte (not that I can think of, anyway), or the time when he kissed Bojack out of "excitement" after telling him they're making a show, plus, what was already mentioned above. I don't think it was glaringly obvious the first time you watch it, but after finding out he's gay and rewatching - it all makes sense! Haha

I always think of this episode to be kind of kafkaesque, considering the fact that all he wanted to do for the entire episode was to sincerely apologize to Kelsey but there was always a tiny inconvenience that stopped him and in the end he finds out that he could've just spoken to her all along! It is such a great episode
I didn’t really start paying attention to the show until season 3 or 4. This episode, like many, hits so close to home and hurts a lot the way you explain it. I find myself wishing I was a better person. But thanks for doing the video nonetheless!

They really took liberties with the animation and it definitely paid off. I love the contrast of how beautiful the scenes are vs the regret that Bojack is going through. It parallels really nicely. This is my favourite episode. I love his slight personality change to figure out a way to apologise to Kelsey. His finalised letter hits me like a truck. And has become my motto in life.
This was my favorite episode so far - just the fun, cute adventure of Bojack and the baby and how Bojack's best side shows. I plan on watching to the end of S5 and then rewatching all the way to the end of S5, then watching to just before the S6 finale, then rewatching S6 and finally watching the finale.
I've watched this episode for more than 200 times and it never fails to impress me. I love this episodes because it shows us the underwater world for the first time. And for the first time, Bojack takes care of a child without under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He is completely sober for the entire time he's taking care of the little seahorse, and he takes care and loves the seahorse unconditionally for one episode much better than his father loved his own son his entire life. We see Bojack's caring side and it shows he really did have a heart, not like most episodes where he's cynical and condescending and manipulating. All he wanted was to take care of the baby seahorse and when the seahorse is reunited with his family, he doesn't even recognize or acknowledge Bojack anymore and that is so heartbreaking. One of the greatest episodes of television ever.
This was my favorite episode because, to me, this episode spoke the most to me more than anything else And yet, there wasn't dialogue They managed to get so many messages across but they didn't have to resort to the usual sad dialogue from Bojack To see so much be done with just the actions and visuals alone is beautiful to me But that's just my two cents on the whole thing

Great! And this is my take on this ep. if anyone is interested. When I focused on those lyrics in the final song, I realised that this might be a hidden little way to meaning of this episode. The part in the chorus: "You find me, in sea of dreams, where no-one cares about my words." got my attention. When I think of it, BoJack is always trying to talk his way out of anything. He uses words to self-pity, to bullshiting people, to offending people etc. So this time underwater "no-one cares about his words", so when we se BoJack who cannot speak, we see one of the most sincere parts of him in those first couple of seasons (how he takes care of the baby). And when he tries to put in the words something again (he writes the letter), it fails. I don't know, it feels to me like a deep and meaningful theme.

excellent video. i’d like to point out that the theme you mentioned of bojack “leaving things unsaid” and not trying to patch things up because he believes it’s “too late” PERFECTLY ties into what hollyhock says to her friend tawnie in season 6: *”you do this thing where you don’t think you can EVER be forgiven but i can’t even FORGIVE you if you don’t say you’re sorry.”* this was after tawnie did something that hurt hollyhock’s feelings, and after tawnie apologizes properly, and at the RIGHT moment, hollyhock says: “see? that’s all i wanted.” bojack, who watched this conversation and interaction between them play out before him, was utterly SHOCKED at the way tawnie apologized so quickly and the way hollyhock chose to forgive her immediately. i remember him saying “that’s IT?” when they made up, just goes to show that if bojack only learned this lesson sooner (owning up to your mistake, forgiveness can be granted if aren’t a coward and if you give a proper apology before it’s too late), then maybe he wouldn’t have lost friends like kelsey, herb, todd, etc
I came here to find out why this is my favorite episode from the show. This was the first episode I watched and its balance between dark humor, stupid humor, thoughts on human mental problems, and the fact that a person was unable to speak but still communicate made me want to know the whole story. what a brilliant episode.
my most favourite scene from the episode was when bojack returns the baby to the father and then just stand on the house's door, the father offered him food he said no, he offered him money, he said no, he asked him what he wants, bojack said I don't know,.... this is some serious storytelling because there was no dialogue nothing in the whole episode, still was able to understand what is happening. brilliant stuff!!
Normally we watch shows in the hopes that characters will better themselves. It's somehow so fascinating to watch the opposite play out, and yet not feel cheated or disappointed.
I also thought of it as a language barrier between people with different languages. Bojack could easily talk but doesn’t realize until it’s too late. Kind of like how people in real life could easily learn languages but it’s too late because of racism. He then starts accept their ways after growing attachment towards the baby seahorse
I really love that one of Bojacks greatest acts of kindness he does without anyone really knowing who he is or what he went through and he never really brings it back up later. It's interesting how when Bojack does things on instinct, he can show a good side to him, but when he lets himself talk (out loud or thinking too much) is when he makes his biggest mistakes, time and time again. Also gotta love how this one act of his is both brave and selfless, the exact opposite he usually acts, all because he couldn't talk his way out of it. (Sorry for long post)
This and "Free Churro" are my favorite episodes in the entire show. I don't really know why. I think it's because compared to the other episodes I liked more of the moments but when I watched those two episodes I knew they were going to be my favorite ones.

When you spoke about the pattern of BoJack screwing people over through his actions (or inaction) then abandoning them, I also thought of Sharona - as much as they weren't super close friends and we find out in S6 that she got help and got sober after getting fired from Horsin' Around which is great - but I still think it fits the pattern of how BoJack treats Herb and Kelsey too. I really appreciate your BoJack videos, thanks again. BoJack is beyond desperate to communicate the entire episode, whereas on land he avoided talking about things. When he can he doesn’t want to, when he can’t anymore, he needs to.
Commenting before I watch, I’ve watched Bojack at least 30 times through season 1-6. This episode struck me hard when Bojack brought the baby seahorse back. The dad kept trying to see what he wanted, food, money, etc, but all Bojack wanted was to see a normal family in action. Something he never got to see other than on Horsin Around.. this episode is one of the best.
Fantastic analysis Johnny. Your BoJack videos are seriously on point. There are so many great things you are covering in them, and the format in which you do them is top notch. I hope you continue making many more of these because they are a joy to watch! One thing I would add to this episode in particular is how great the music is. It's the only BoJack episode with a completely original soundtrack if I'm not mistaken, and it really carries out the story along with the visuals. Not sure if there is anything particularly important about how the music sounds, I just know it fits perfectly and I love it. The credits song, Sea of Dreams, is also a masterpiece.
for some reason, this episode spikes my anxiety through the roof because Bojack is getting late for his premiere. It's something with me that I can't sit through people getting late for important events. Like that one episode of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. TOW No One's Ready, I can't sit through that. That episode makes me wanna pull my hair out, like argh, get ready people! The same is with this episode for me.
I feel like a lot of the season one and two episodes end on some sort of joke that also doubles as a sad reminder of the realities of life. This theme doesn’t really continue through the rest of the seasons and this episode ends on one of the best depressing jokes of the series
At the end of this episode, I just said holy fuck outloud. I figured there would have to be videos talking about it. I have no words for what I just witnessed. This felt like a nightmare where I couldn't outrun whatever's chasing me. This whole episode is just fucking crazy.

I like to think that Kelsey gave Gina the role of Fireflame bc of her history with Bojack. I like to think that they sat down together alone and Kelsey did what she does best: draws out the raw emotional honesty from her actors. And she found out that the infamous choking incident was not in fact excellent acting and she helped Gina get help. Bc she knows how hard it is to work with bojack too and how badly he lets the people he says he cares about down. So she gave gina her shot and it worked out. And thinking about that makes me so happy.
I like this episode because Bojack isn't able to talk his way out of things like he usually does. His actions speak much louder here

damn. this kinda made me think about the way I wanna live my life. I've always been a loner for most of it and stuck my nose into psychology books. I could have a lot of awesome people in my life right now but refused to go down that path. now all I have are books and words, but none of them are ever said back to me.

lxs You can lift that label off of yourself whenever you would like to. I think the reason you are afraid of being social now is because you are scared your peers will find it weird how your are social all of a sudden and mock you for it. Thats why you said they label you as the “quiet kid”. But the only reason your quiet is because you accept that label! I know it’s scary to be judged by people you know because you have put them on a pedestal mentally and figuratively live or die by what they think of you, but if you never care what anybody else thinks and go out there and be who you wanna be you will never be embarrassed again. Whenever someone judges you always think to yourself “Who is this person to judge me? They don’t know anything about me.” And they definitely don’t because you said yourself you’ve never talked to most of them. Remember this though, Once you start being social, you cannot go back. Even if you hit a road block and have a really awkward interaction where you feel like everyone is laughing at you and they all think your a joke, act like you don’t care because if they see that, they will eventually stop because they feed off of reactions, when you don’t give them one and brush it off as if nothing happened they will get bored/humbled and give you mutual respect for respecting yourself enough to ignore their hate. Sorry about writing so much I just felt the need to get this off of my chest, I hope you take whatever you can from this message to use in your life and I hope you are successful in making your life change for the better.

I never realized the nicotine patches and vodka at the end were Bojack regressing to familiarity. My story-struxtured little brain saw it as, "Bojack went through a journey, and life is rewarding his good deed." The themes in this show are paramount, thank you for putting them to words.
I think there's other stuff in this episode that hasn't really been said still. Throughout Bojack's life, one thing has proven to make him happy: the idea of a happy family. He pictures a life with Charlotte where they've escaped celebrity life and raised a kid, he constantly jokes and denies his abusive childhood to try and reflect only on positives (for a while, at least), and he takes actions to pursue his idealized version of a family. This episode is a really well-done showcase of that, because his time spent around the baby seahorse is some of the happiest we've seen him, ever. There are troubles, sure, but Bojack is consistently happy that he's able to take care of this child.
The end of his time with the baby speaks volumes too. He wants to step in, to get some sort of gratitude, one more happy moment with the kid he's just delivered to its parent, anything, but the moment the child is reunited with its family, they all cast him aside. They move on without him, just like Charlotte, and just like every other attempt he's had at a happy family. Once again, his inability to speak up casts away a chance to be happy, and though I'm not saying he would've adopted the kid or stolen it or anything, he'd have been a lot happier if he came in and got some recognition, maybe by joining them for the meal that was offered to him.
I'm not the best at wording this stuff yet, but there's a lot of symbolism in the show that hints toward Bojack wanting to belong somewhere, and he pictures himself belonging in a happy family where he's a caring father and has a loving relationship, the exact opposite of what his parents were like. In the season 3 finale, I think there's a double meaning behind the field of horses. Of course there's the symbolism of him wanting to step away from celebrity life, to find meaning in smaller things and live in the moment, but I think he also enjoys seeing those horses because he wants to be among them, to be included in the closest thing to a family he can have.
I realize I'm way late to the party but I only recently watched this show and I absolutely adore it, and through all the videos I've watched on it I haven't seen any addressing that his main source of happiness comes being part of a loving family.

I think that what makes this series so great is the fact that Bojack represents a person we are all afraid to become, he lets everyone down including himself, he constantly wants to do better but ultimately never really tries and he always makes the wrong choices, he's stuck in an endless loop, basically the moral of the story is Dont be like Bojack

If there's an underrated villain in Bojack, It's Angela Diaz.
Her character and performance are the reason I love the season 6 episode Angela so much. She's clearly a very good businesswoman, and both with Herb and signing off the rights to his show managed to convince Bojack to do something he really didn't want to.
It's pretty ironic and hypocritical she fired Herb for being homosexual when she was a lesbian. She mentioned her partner in season 6.

We ultimately don't know her personal opinion about Herb being gay or him being fired for it. She was likely closeted or discreetly saw a partner in the 90's. If she were forcibly outed like Herb she would have been fired too, especially since she was an executive.
I'm not saying it would have been pragmatic for Angela to risk her job for Herb, especially if she didn't know him. But she facilitated a culture that actively discriminated against LGBTQ+ despite being a member herself. The threat of losing her career, Herb's firing being 'just business,' or public pressure doesn't negate that fact.
If I were to guess, the writers wrote about Angela's partner/sexuality to show that she was in a much more vulnerable position professionally and personally than Bojack realized.

She does say herself, they were trying to sell the network to Disney, a family-oriented organisation in a far more socially conservative time; and it’s not just the issue of Herb’s sexuality, it’s also that he was caught in a sexual act, possibly implied to be public, resulting in a sex scandal. That scandal put that sale in danger. Even if Herb was straight, it would’ve. I think Angela’s reaction to the news indicates that she was aware of Herb’s sexuality and that she did feel some guilt about what came next, but there was no way she could save him from what came next. In order to achieve what her job needed, what her bosses wanted, Angela had to get rid of Herb. It didn’t matter how she felt or how she understood. Herb had to go.
After this episode, I was reminded when diane said, “I don’t think anyone is inherently good or bad, I just think you are what you do.” And the fact that this episode ties back into that theme is very powerful to me.
How about analyzing Todd? I'm pretty sure that one is in the back burner for. Never the less good work on making sense of everything linking episodes.

Out of all of the friendships that Bojack screwed up over the series, Kelsey is the one that hurt the most. Mostly because she was the only one that made him cry. Bojack NEVER cries, despite being deeply depressed.

Downer ending doesn’t really need a deep dive explanation. It’s 90% just an acid trip with only a few more subtle themes. Times arrow would be great, but I would prefer this episodes counterpart, Free Churo.

Bojack Horseman Is probably my favorite show. I've watched it over and over and I've realized so many things that make Bojack... Bojack. He's guilt ridden and never knows what to do, even though he's the one who puts himself into those situations. Bojack is Bojack and he makes mistakes yes but whenever he makes his all to often mistakes... he can never fix it.

Sebastian Clerey I just think it’s so rare for us to see Bojack the “small” mistakes he makes. Obviously when life-ruiningly bad things happen like with Penny or Sarah Lynn Bojack spirals into deep self hatred. But we don’t see him have the same level of remorse towards other people he’s wronged like PC or Todd or Kelsey. So watching him struggle with this was really refreshing and one of the moments that gives us hope for Bojack to become a better person. That coupled with the visual story telling and the bond Bojack makes with the seahorse baby is just so hopeful. I could go on and on about this episode lol. It’s not my absolute favorite in the series but it’s up there for sure
Fun fact: this was also th only episode in the entire show that contained animals that were not anthropomorphic. Sea anemones are animals.

I was watching this, and had rewatched the show recently, and then I realized Charlotte was "dating" Herb and I missed that totally throughout my watches. I'm just wondering if there were hints, that I missed, that Herb was bisexual, or he was just using Charlotte as a cover to prevent from being outed as gay in the 90s?
I know it's horribly off from the topic of the video, but I had to get it off my chest lol.
In the 80s being openly gay wasn’t as accepted in society. We don’t know for sure, it’s possible that Herb knew and was covering, it’s possible that he was still trying to convince himself that he wasn’t gay given the way the world would react, but Charlotte has a telling line in The Telescope, when she says she “Doesn’t think she is what Herb is looking for”

I lived through the 90s and I definitely knew that homosexuality wasn't accepted even in that time period (when Bojack Horseman actually takes place), and I guess I auto-accepted that Herb was dating Charlotte as a cover for his homosexuality.
I'm actually on another rewatch of Bojack Horseman right now and still on season 1, I'll keep a look out for that line from Charlotte!
I always saw it as Herb not having himself fully figured out yet at that point. Many possible reasons though.

I actually think the show did a great job at subtly portraying Herb as gay! There were just so many miniscule hints, like how he's almost never seen touching or being slightly affectionate with Charlotte (not that I can think of, anyway), or the time when he kissed Bojack out of "excitement" after telling him they're making a show, plus, what was already mentioned above.
I don't think it was glaringly obvious the first time you watch it, but after finding out he's gay and rewatching - it all makes sense! Haha
The ending of this episode makes me laugh and cry at the same time every time I watch it. It makes me want to give Bojack a hug.

I always think of this episode to be kind of kafkaesque, considering the fact that all he wanted to do for the entire episode was to sincerely apologize to Kelsey but there was always a tiny inconvenience that stopped him and in the end he finds out that he could've just spoken to her all along! It is such a great episode
I didn’t really start paying attention to the show until season 3 or 4. This episode, like many, hits so close to home and hurts a lot the way you explain it. I find myself wishing I was a better person. But thanks for doing the video nonetheless!

This was my favorite episode so far - just the fun, cute adventure of Bojack and the baby and how Bojack's best side shows.
I plan on watching to the end of S5 and then rewatching all the way to the end of S5, then watching to just before the S6 finale, then rewatching S6 and finally watching the finale.
Stay away from my videos before you finish! I spoil a lot in most vids!
I've watched this episode for more than 200 times and it never fails to impress me. I love this episodes because it shows us the underwater world for the first time. And for the first time, Bojack takes care of a child without under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He is completely sober for the entire time he's taking care of the little seahorse, and he takes care and loves the seahorse unconditionally for one episode much better than his father loved his own son his entire life.
We see Bojack's caring side and it shows he really did have a heart, not like most episodes where he's cynical and condescending and manipulating. All he wanted was to take care of the baby seahorse and when the seahorse is reunited with his family, he doesn't even recognize or acknowledge Bojack anymore and that is so heartbreaking. One of the greatest episodes of television ever.
This was my favorite episode because, to me, this episode spoke the most to me more than anything else
And yet, there wasn't dialogue
They managed to get so many messages across but they didn't have to resort to the usual sad dialogue from Bojack
To see so much be done with just the actions and visuals alone is beautiful to me
But that's just my two cents on the whole thing

Great! And this is my take on this ep. if anyone is interested. When I focused on those lyrics in the final song, I realised that this might be a hidden little way to meaning of this episode. The part in the chorus: "You find me, in sea of dreams, where no-one cares about my words." got my attention. When I think of it, BoJack is always trying to talk his way out of anything. He uses words to self-pity, to bullshiting people, to offending people etc. So this time underwater "no-one cares about his words", so when we se BoJack who cannot speak, we see one of the most sincere parts of him in those first couple of seasons (how he takes care of the baby). And when he tries to put in the words something again (he writes the letter), it fails. I don't know, it feels to me like a deep and meaningful theme.
I get so much enjoyment out of your videos! Thank you for posting these! I'm kind of stuck in an endless loop of rewatching Bojack and the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films. i remember this episode very often. I've lived in a country where i didn't speak the language nor did i understand the culture. it was incredibly hard to find connection and what's even worse is that when you do find connection it feels impossible to keep it 💔
excellent video. i’d like to point out that the theme you mentioned of bojack “leaving things unsaid” and not trying to patch things up because he believes it’s “too late” PERFECTLY ties into what hollyhock says to her friend tawnie in season 6: *”you do this thing where you don’t think you can EVER be forgiven but i can’t even FORGIVE you if you don’t say you’re sorry.”* this was after tawnie did something that hurt hollyhock’s feelings, and after tawnie apologizes properly, and at the RIGHT moment, hollyhock says: “see? that’s all i wanted.” bojack, who watched this conversation and interaction between them play out before him, was utterly SHOCKED at the way tawnie apologized so quickly and the way hollyhock chose to forgive her immediately. i remember him saying “that’s IT?” when they made up, just goes to show that if bojack only learned this lesson sooner (owning up to your mistake, forgiveness can be granted if aren’t a coward and if you give a proper apology before it’s too late), then maybe he wouldn’t have lost friends like kelsey, herb, todd, etc
I came here to find out why this is my favorite episode from the show. This was the first episode I watched and its balance between dark humor, stupid humor, thoughts on human mental problems, and the fact that a person was unable to speak but still communicate made me want to know the whole story. what a brilliant episode.
my most favourite scene from the episode was when bojack returns the baby to the father and then just stand on the house's door, the father offered him food he said no, he offered him money, he said no, he asked him what he wants, bojack said I don't know,.... this is some serious storytelling because there was no dialogue nothing in the whole episode, still was able to understand what is happening. brilliant stuff!!
Normally we watch shows in the hopes that characters will better themselves. It's somehow so fascinating to watch the opposite play out, and yet not feel cheated or disappointed.

I also thought of it as a language barrier between people with different languages. Bojack could easily talk but doesn’t realize until it’s too late. Kind of like how people in real life could easily learn languages but it’s too late because of racism. He then starts accept their ways after growing attachment towards the baby seahorse

this is one of my favourite episodes out of the whole series mainly because of how much the silence says.
I always viewed this episode as him looking after his inner child lol
I really love that one of Bojacks greatest acts of kindness he does without anyone really knowing who he is or what he went through and he never really brings it back up later. It's interesting how when Bojack does things on instinct, he can show a good side to him, but when he lets himself talk (out loud or thinking too much) is when he makes his biggest mistakes, time and time again.
Also gotta love how this one act of his is both brave and selfless, the exact opposite he usually acts, all because he couldn't talk his way out of it.

When you spoke about the pattern of BoJack screwing people over through his actions (or inaction) then abandoning them, I also thought of Sharona - as much as they weren't super close friends and we find out in S6 that she got help and got sober after getting fired from Horsin' Around which is great - but I still think it fits the pattern of how BoJack treats Herb and Kelsey too. I really appreciate your BoJack videos, thanks again.

BoJack is beyond desperate to communicate the entire episode, whereas on land he avoided talking about things. When he can he doesn’t want to, when he can’t anymore, he needs to.
Commenting before I watch, I’ve watched Bojack at least 30 times through season 1-6. This episode struck me hard when Bojack brought the baby seahorse back. The dad kept trying to see what he wanted, food, money, etc, but all Bojack wanted was to see a normal family in action. Something he never got to see other than on Horsin Around.. this episode is one of the best.
Fantastic analysis Johnny. Your BoJack videos are seriously on point. There are so many great things you are covering in them, and the format in which you do them is top notch. I hope you continue making many more of these because they are a joy to watch!
One thing I would add to this episode in particular is how great the music is. It's the only BoJack episode with a completely original soundtrack if I'm not mistaken, and it really carries out the story along with the visuals. Not sure if there is anything particularly important about how the music sounds, I just know it fits perfectly and I love it. The credits song, Sea of Dreams, is also a masterpiece.

for some reason, this episode spikes my anxiety through the roof because Bojack is getting late for his premiere. It's something with me that I can't sit through people getting late for important events. Like that one episode of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. TOW No One's Ready, I can't sit through that. That episode makes me wanna pull my hair out, like argh, get ready people! The same is with this episode for me.

I feel like a lot of the season one and two episodes end on some sort of joke that also doubles as a sad reminder of the realities of life. This theme doesn’t really continue through the rest of the seasons and this episode ends on one of the best depressing jokes of the series
At the end of this episode, I just said holy fuck outloud. I figured there would have to be videos talking about it. I have no words for what I just witnessed. This felt like a nightmare where I couldn't outrun whatever's chasing me. This whole episode is just fucking crazy.

I’m sorry but not super sorry
I like to think that Kelsey gave Gina the role of Fireflame bc of her history with Bojack. I like to think that they sat down together alone and Kelsey did what she does best: draws out the raw emotional honesty from her actors. And she found out that the infamous choking incident was not in fact excellent acting and she helped Gina get help. Bc she knows how hard it is to work with bojack too and how badly he lets the people he says he cares about down. So she gave gina her shot and it worked out. And thinking about that makes me so happy.
It's a wonderful achievement, that episode.
