Love that final confrontation between Alejandro and Kate. It's not just him testing her to see if she'd pull the trigger, but also him not caring if she does because then he could join his wife and daughter. My favourite Villeneuve film.

Ed Calderon said that when he completed his police training in Mexico, the first task he was given was a call that said "Bring the bolt cutters," and he was excited because he thought it meant that they were going to cut off a lock to bust into a drug lab or something like that, but instead, they were cutting the chains off of some corpses that were hanging from a bridge. Everytime that she was given an out, she refused it, she just kept delving deeper and deeper into the whole situation, regardless of what it was doing to her. With the learn part it's phrased like she's here to learn about what the cartels are actually up to and get some insight into the bigger picture but really it's learn that you're just a rubber stamp for us to do the shit that needs to be done.

Fantastic movie that really has you gripped, one of the best movies to do that in the last decade or so. My other one I always recommend is Shot Caller (2017), a criminally overlooked movie starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lannister from GoT you know) - and he's fantastic in this movie - together with a bunch of other highly recognizable actors. Regular family man Nikolaj makes a mistake and winds up in state prison, and once inside it's basically sink or swim. The movie actually opens with him being released from prison after his time is up, and we follow his struggle to complete one last deal he can't back out from, while the time leading up to and including the prison sentence is shown in flashbacks. It's just a gut-wrenching depiction of what the US state prison system does to its inmates, and what the inmates have to do to not become a target, a victim.

I love Josh Brolin's characters condesending "Yep, that's why you're here!!"
Basically saying, after everything you've seen and all you've been thru, you still haven't learned what accomplishes results in this war!! Other than, you are a 100% a sheep and you don't belong in this life!!

It's just that we don't print it in our newspapers because it's way too graphic.

Yes the cartel does stuff like that all the time thats why border protection is so important we dont want the cartel coming over here and doing that here thats probably johs brolens job to stop the cartel from getting here or controlling whoever takes over ... which we also do

Flip flops in a formal meeting is a Delta-boy move - they do not give a f and they think they are better than everyone else in that room - and they are generally right.

I like to think everything she went through made that dent that she was craving, but sadly unless you can affect the demand while preserving the personal freedoms you value, the supply will move around to fill the need one way or another. It just won't be from Fausto. His biggest competitor will step up to fill the void left behind. Whether out of circumstance, greed, or whatever reason, there will always be people willing to cut corners and put themselves in danger to get rich and powerful as long as that demand is still around.
BTW, I don't have any answers. I think you have to keep playing whack-a-mole, despite the futility. It maintains some sort of stasis, despite the horror. Maybe legalize everything to get it out of the black market, but that's not a sure thing. There are a million and one ways that could make things worse too... Freedom is messy when people want to do things not in their best interest, but that's their choice, and really the whole point...

My issue with Movies like Sicario, the same with my issue with movies like Beast of no nations, Blood diamond and Black Hawk Down is, the real culprit is often the American government that incentivizes third world governments and communities against the interest of their own people. Then when that person leverages their ill gotten wealth and goes rogue, the same American government goes after them, then makes movies portraying those countries as Hell holes. As far as Americans are concerned, they are Rome. They are the light, and the rest of the world is darkness.
In reality, unless you believe every other culture and race is simply inferior, every nation strives for its equilibrium and happiness. The real evil is American Capitalism. But y'all arent ready for that conversation.
I can only imagine how these countries feel being portrayed as violent hell holes in every single movie. Arabs, South America, Africa. Over and over. For the consumption of emotionally-manipulated Americans.
