MAMA is a korean word which means Majesty (Your highness). The song is about the people, society, government, etc. Why must people hurt each other? Why do love/trust/respect slowly fades?
This is a really unique and powerful debut song for a kpop group. EXO's song is really diverse. They do try a lot of genre but still puts their own style.
Thanks for doing this explanation for those don't know Korean. It helps us to understand this song a bit in depth.

I told my mother that mama (what we say for mom here) means majesty. She likes it far too much
EXO's debut was the most expensive debut, at the time (I think still is???); they had two pre-debut releases (History & What Is Love) + like 23 teasers to introduce the members, their talents, and EXO's sound & concept. Their debut was pretty successful, but didn't meet the expectations people had for a group from the company they're from, SM Entertainment. They went on a year long hiatus, and fans weren't sure what would happen. But, when they came back, they were on fire~ Within a year of their return they revived the Korean physical album market from a 12/13 year drought, being the first Korean act to sell 1 million physical albums in 12/13 years!!!
EXO was also unique because the original 12 members were divided into two groups(EXO-K & EXO-M) so that they could attack the Korean market and the Chinese market at the same time. EXO-K sangs EXO songs in Korean and promoted mainly in Korea, while EXO-M sang EXO songs in Mandarin and promoted mainly in China. Both groups were eventually joined together & started promoting just all members mostly under the name EXO. The EXO-K MAMA mv mostly features EXO-K members with cameos from EXO-M; to see EXO-M's powers and hear them sing, you have to watch the EXO-M version of the mv~

Sarang means "love" and MAMA means "Your Highness" in Korean. They are asking why Earth has become a place where trust, communication and love is declining. So they are here to spread love. The two forces(EXO-K and EXO-M) EXOs fandom is called EXO-L for EXO-Love as the letter "L" stand in the middle of "K" and "M". EXO has mysterious concept since beginning. They are aliens from EXOPlanet and have SuperPower, like Frost, Healing, Water, Light, Fire, Thunder, Strength, Wind and Teleportation. Actually, the stories still continue since MAMA to Tempo (the newest EXO song MV), even VCR in their concert. EXO also matched their SuperPower in some song and choreo, they are really unique and amazing.

Thank you so much for your reaction. I think you are one of the few people that I know that they could appreciate MAMA from their first time watching. Usually it takes a while to grow on them. Also, please react to MAMA MV chinese version. In there they will be showing the other 6 members power, which did cameo appearances at the start of the video (the monk robes) and towards the end. The same will happen on the chinese version, but this time EXO k will make cameo appearances.

I just found your channel and i really like the way you pay attention not only the video and music but also the culture. Kpop is something amazing, i used to only listen to rock and i was judgmental to pop but after finding Kpop i was blown away, the commitment and quality is amazing, even the album packaging is in another level.
EXO is one of my favorite groups along with NCT and all SM entertainment groups always offer somethig fresh and have mark and shape kpop. Also you should check full albums or live performances, you won't be disappointed.

I loved watching this. I could truly see how much you enjoyed it. Besides the amazing vocals they have , their powers are one of my favorite things. I have no problem admitting I completely geek out over it when they use their powers .
That is where the iconic tree choreo came from.
They were split in two (exo-k and exo-m) when 3 of 4 Chinese members left all 9 of them perform as one group that is EXO.
In here this exo-k (Korean). Chinese version is performed by exo-m (Chinese-Mandarin)
Chanyeol's power exo-k( fire/phoenix) his counterpart for exo-m is plight/dragon. Another is Suho (K) his "superpower" is water) and Xiumin (M) his "power is frost. So in the video Suho is facing the mirror but the reflection is Xiumin.
From Mama almost all of their MVS are related up to Tempo.
In Korean MAMA is a term they use to address a leader or King or queen. Its a term of reverence and respect. It's similar to saying "Your majesty." If you watch very many historical Korean dramas you will hear the characters call the royal family and especially the head of the royal family or leader "Mama." So in this song they are speaking to the leader or deity who sent them to Earth, essentially asking, "Now that I'm here, Your Majesty what should I do? How do I fulfill what you have sent me to do? etc."
Now that you have seen the EXO-K version of "Mama" you really need to watch the EXO-M version. its important you know EXO's story and really pay attention to the introduction of this MV and the whole story in this MV to understand everything that happens from now on in all the rest of EXO's MVs. To truly understand EXO you need to understand that EXO debuted in 2012 -- So "Mama" is EXO's debut song and MV. It is how EXO was introduced to the world and it explains the group's concept.
From the very beginning EXO's concept is that they are aliens from planet EXO and they came to Earth with super powers to protect the Tree of Life from the Red Forces. Each of the members has a super power that is unique to them and almost every MV will have at least one if not all of them using their powers.
Exo, as in exoskeleton, means "outer," so as a member of EXO they are outside the ordinary.The groups concept comes from the real term exoplanet, which is a term that is used for a planet that is outside our solar system, so their name was chosen to represent the fact that they are stars that are "out of this world" when it comes to their talents. EXO's concept is also connected to real life planetary and solar events so all of EXO's comebacks and new song releases for the main group of EXO are all connected to when eclipses and other planetary phenomenons take place. For example, their comeback for their "War" album and "Power" album coincided with when we had a solar eclipse, etc. SM Entertainment (one of the big 3 entertainment companies in Korea and around the world), the company EXO is represented by, and its founder, Lee Soo-Man, has all their release dates and concepts planned out for years and it all has something to do with real celestial events that are predicted to take place.
In order to really understand EXO, you also need to know that In the beginning there was 12 members and they were split up into 2 groups EXO-K and EXO-M. EXO-K sang and performed their songs in Korean and EXO-M sang and performed those same songs in Mandarin Chinese. EXO-K had 6 Korean members and EXO-M had 4 Chinese members and 2 Korean members. So to really understand their full origin story you have to watch both the K and the M version of "MAMA," not just the K version, because even though both the K and M versions of "Mama" feature all 12 of the members, the K version focuses on the K members and their powers and the M version focuses on the M members and their powers. Plus, this is a good opportunity for you to hear what the song sounds like in both Mandarin and Korean. (I encourage you to watch EXO-M's version of "MAMA" even if you don't react to it and really listen to the introduction story at the beginning. Now that you know a little more about what it is trying to tell you, you will probably start to understand more of why EXO does the things they do and what makes them so special.)
However, since then 3 of the 4 Chinese members have left the group (short answer to focus on their solo work back in China) but there is still one Chinese member left, Lay. (Any performances or MVs you watch that took place prior to May 2014 you will see all 12 of the members. Kris and Luhan left in 2014 and Tao left in 2015.) However, now -- because they no longer have enough Chinese members -- they no longer do separate promotions where the group is split up, but they still produce all their songs in both Korean and Mandarin they just now promote all as one big group EXO with 9 members.
So not only does EXO have amazing MVs, but its always double because any time they have a Korean version they also will have a Mandarin version so it means they have to shoot two separate videos.Their fandom name is EXO-L because L falls right between K and M and I like to think it stands for Love. 😍
In the EXO-K version of "Mama", (the version you just watched) the members are using their powers to search for and meet up with the M members. That is why you see the K members traveling to find the M member. For example, you see Kai (the main dancer and a vocalist and sub-rapper) using his power of teleportation as he searches for the M members and you see Baekhyun (one of the most powerful vocalists in Kpop) use his power of light and Suho (the leader of EXO) with his power of water, Chanyeol (the rapper, who FYI also is a singer) with the power of fire using his Phoenix wings, D.O. (the main vocalist) with the power of earth and strength and Sehun (also a rapper of the group) controlling the wind. Because Xiumin (a vocalist and oldest member of EXO) is one of the two Korean members of EXO-M, you see him appear in the mirror because the K members are searching for him and he is being summoned, etc. As the story goes, when EXO arrived on Earth they did not all arrive together. Their story starts out that they were dropped on Earth in different locations all over the world and they have to search for each other and meet up, kind of like in a quest, before they can begin to figure out how to accomplish the tasks they have been sent to Earth to do.
The tattoos on Kai's face and body say EXO and also all of the EXO member's names, or at least the 6 EXO-K members names, as well as EXO's symbol and other hidden clues to EXO's origin story. (Everything EXO does is just one hidden message after another.)
Now that you have seen "Mama" and are starting to understand EXO's backstory, if you watch any of their other MVs, such as their "Power" MV, it should make more sense to you. if you keep in mind all the details about them being aliens with super powers and how they are on a mission, etc. The "Power" MV is all about how the Red Forces stole EXO's powers and they had to fight the robot, which was under the Red Forces control, to get their powers back. And once they got their powers back they were then sent to Earth. The one thing you have to keep in mind with all of EXO's MVs, and I really mean all of them (including EXO-CBX MVs, and even some of Lay's solo MVs), is that they are all connected and they all tell a little more of EXO's story and why they are on Earth, etc.
Understanding "Mama' should also help you understand their Ko Ko Bop MV better as well. (Ko Ko Bop is supposed to be about them just arriving on Earth and learning to master their powers.) Some theories even connect the story in their "Lucky One" MV to the story in Ko Ko Bop. In "Lucky One" EXO has been captured by the government or some authority and they are doing experiments on EXO to try and figure out what makes them special. In "Lucky One" the EXO members use their powers to escape the facility. So some theories say that the story in "Ko Ko Bop" is EXO trying to detox from the drugs they were given in the government facility and the blue Ko Ko Bop drink Shuo mixes and the members drink is to counteract the effects of the drugs in their system. That is why the members act so out of it and in a drugged state in Ko Ko Bop.
Unfortunately each part of the story is not in chronological order, so we as EXO-L have to become detectives and analyze every aspect of all of their teasers, MVs, songs, albums and live performances and piece it all together to understand the story behind it all.
To help you pinpoint the powers being used in their MVs and live performances here is a list of the members and what their special power is.
The members powers are:
EXO-K
Suho : water (Fun fact: Did you know that Suho in Korean means guardian, as in the guardian of EXO? That's why as the leader of EXO, Kim Jun Myeo's stage name is Suho.)
Baekhyun : Light
Chanyeol : fire
D.O : earth (dirt) which gives him strength/force
Kai : teleportation
Sehun : Wind
EXO-M
Xiumin : snow/ice (frost)
Lay : healing
Chen : thunder/lightning/electricity
(As you can see, Xiumin and Chen were given stage names that sounded more Chinese so they would fit in better in EXO-M because they are the Korean members of the Chinese group)

Kris: Flight (He was the leader of EXO-M when they used to promote as two separate groups.)
Luhan: telekinesis (control things with his mind)
Tao: Controlling time

No this was their debut song back in 2012, they were super young in this one, it includes all 12 members but overtime there’s only been 9 members left. They didn’t know that they would end up being so big & popular, their genre of music is unique on top being able to singing & rapping in Korean, Chinese, and Japanese while dancing! Mama MV is the introduction to understand everything that happens from that to rest of EXO MVs, stage shows, concerts, dance choreos. EXO debuted in 2012 so “Mama” is EXO’s debut MV that shows how EXO introduced to Earth and explains the EXO mythology.
They are aliens from Exo Planet, with super Powers, brought the heart of the tree of life to Earth to hide it from the evil red force until it is purified… (not destroyed… purified)

First set up was 12 member 6+6 Korean and Mandarin groups: EXO-K and EXO-M with the motto “we are one”. There were 4 Chinese members at the beginning of whom 3 out of 4 have left based on heavy training schedules. Lay the remaining Chinese member is one of the most loved and appreciated member of EXO for his selfless, devoted, loyal work. He stays under SM Ent although he runs his solo work in China and in USA.
Exo fandom is called EXO-L; stands for Love. (EXO-KLM)
As the story goes, EXO arrived on Earth separately; they were dropped in different locations all over the world and they had to search for each other before meet up.
Every little thing in mv’s or vcr’s have a meaning, a hidden message and metaphors.
Mama and Power MVs are in fact are telling the beginning and the current status of the story. They were kidnapped in “Lucky One” MV, they were drugged and their forces were weakened by red force. In KokoBop they were in a chill state, drinking the blue drink from their leader’s hand, trying to sober up… You can see them trying their forces, acting so out of it and in a drugged state.
After Kokobop they fought with the red force’s robot in Power MV and got their power balls back. Except for Baekhyun… his ball of power did not lit (He is the light.)Both Mama and Power MV’s started with animated clips continuing to tell the story.

No that is Kai’s power of transportation, they are have different/similar SuperPowers! That sub group you see dancing, singing and rapping is EXO K who does the korean versions of their music even though both subgroups EXO K & EXO M are in each others’ MVs! The position reverses when EXO M does the chinese versions of their music, they all do the Japanese versions together!
