The History of Bidston Court. The House That Moved.

- I recently found out about a great piece of local Wirral history that relates to the stunning Hillbark Hotel building.
I have created this video to show the history of the building, where it was originally built and for whom as well as when it was moved.

Great video. I grew up round that neck of the woods (no pun intended), would often play up there (we called it The Mops). Here’s some info…
The present entrance is through the gates which led to the stables and coach house.
The path from the gate can be seen to the right of the arch (which leads to the house location). When the house was removed, the stables remained until the second world war, when they were destroyed by a bomb. The foundations and floors of much of this block still remain and are what you see down the ramp behind the gate.
There are no signs that there was ever a building at the site of the main house, most of the site is now covered with trees, but it’s located up on the terrace adjacent to the remaining cart track directly behind the semi-circular wall. In front of this wall are the terraced formal gardens which still remain.
The buiding on Upton Road was obviously originally built as part of the estate, as there is a path from it to the house location, but I think it is unlikely to be a second coach house, more likely a guest house.

My father in law James Lister was boss brickie on this move. He rebuilt the barley suger twist chimneys. We have a pic of him on the roof timbers. All the bricks and timbers where numbered. When the job was finished James was left with a pile of numbered bricks. Looking through his notes he found he had not put in the priest hole, and had the floor dug out to build it. My wife`s uncle Sydney Watkin also worked on it and we have a pic of the whole brickie gang. There is an old movie of them taking Bidston Court down with James removing the chimneys but it belongs to a buisiness group. It is on utube somewhere. James lived in Arrowe Ave Moreton.

Really fascinating video, I had heard some years ago about this building being moved, but was a bit sceptical, so really pleased to have watched your video.
I love the old buildings of liverpool and their history I hope to visit this wonderful city one day soon, the corner stone of England & the envy of the world.

Great video, I used to mess about in there as kid but never knew Hillbark was originally there
Nice bit of history and landscapes. I worked on an old silver smith's in the jewellery quarter in Birmingham, making the building into flats and the place was really haunted from being tugged, whispers and tools being dragged across the floor when we were having lunch in room below. Never been on a job where so many tradesmen come and gone lol. Always wanted to go back and see if the job was ever finished and see if anyone actually living in the hot spots off the building.
The old stables were the bit at around 5:30 (in relation to picture at 03:00). If you look at the back-right of the picture, you can see the sweeping path that leads back onto Vyner Road S. The stables actually stood until the war when they were damaged during the blitz. The house stood where you first said, near the crescent wall, and the gatehouse you were looking for (picture 03:07) is actually still there on Vyner Rd S, as a residential building.
Spent a lot of my younger years up these ways and still wander through and always into the history. Top vid! Cheers!
If you remove all the trees by the circlular wall topographical speaking it's the exact foot print of the house, the house to the left along the track was the gatehouse not the one on Upton road, the stable block was the right side. The terraced path way was to the front of the house. There are old photos online so if you go on Google at look from an aerial point view the house matches the wall area exactly.
The gate that you went into led to the stables and the house was on the top of the terraced garden by that curved wall.
The location on Upton road was called the Priory which I believe is still standing and now called Phoenix Futures.
You can see the layout on some old maps, including the curved wall on one map which will give you a better picture of where the house was exactly. Unfortunately it will not let me post the link to the map.

I believe the semi circular wall was part of an ornate patio with spectacular views.
I also remember reading that in order for Bidston Court to be moved to Frankby, a new road had to be constructed to connect Upton (junction of Old Saughall Road) to Greasby Village. Prior to construction, it was just paths, hedgerows and field boundaries all the way to Greasby which was already connected by road to Frankby.
I knew the story of how the house was moved, fascinating and great to see all the footage you e put together.

WOW...I lived on the wirral years ago ! ....I never knew that the posh house in Roydon was moved there ? My brother still lives on the wirral and I can't wait to tell him !

There's a house in Germany built using the exact same architectural plans. The house begins with a 'C'.

Looks like the curved wall would of been a viewing point for what seemed to be a terraced garden, I had heard that it had been taken down brick by brick and moved to Frankby
