A Brief History on JAWA/Yezdi Motorcycles!

- Hey guys welcome to the another iteration of History on Motorcycles!
Today we are gonna go over the history on iconic Czech motorcycle manufacturer JAWA.
JAWA was founded in 1929 by Frantisek Janecek and is known for its legendary two-stroke engines.
The first JAWA motorcycle 500 OHV was a rebranded 500cc wanderer engine and the word JAWA was derived from first two letters of “Janecek” and “Wanderer”.
The predecessor was JAWA 175, a lightweight motorcycle with a top speed of 80km/hr.
During the 30’s, JAWA also produced number of cars and utility vehicles JAWA Minor and JAWA Minor Sodomka.
It wasn’t until 1946 when JAWA released its first dual exhaust in 250cc two-stroke motorcycle followed by a 350cc twin-cylinder motorcycle.
Two years later in 1948,
JAWA was merged with CZ motorcycles a branch of Skoda works.
In year 1952,
JAWA rolled out a new motorcycle named JAWA 500 OHC.
1960 was the year when JAWA started its operations in India. It was a technical collaboration between JAWA and Ideal Jawa.
At that time, the Indian roads were dominated by Scooters and Bullets.
To compete with Bullet, JAWA targeted its motorcycles towards youth with a tagline “Forever Bike Forever Value”.
The first motorcycle released in India was a JAWA 250 ‘A’ Type.
In 1968,
The technical collaboration between JAWA and Ideal Jawa ended and the name was changed from JAWA to Yezdi.
Later Yezdi released successful models like ‘Oilking’ and ‘Roadking’ which overtook every other bike in that period.
Other motorcycles models produced under the brand name Yezdi were: CL II, 175, 350 Twin, Classic, Deluxe and Monarch.
The company also produced variety of mopeds with two-stroke engines including JAWA 50 Jet and Yezdi 60 Colt.
The company was working on a new refined aluminium casting engine and a prototype named Yezdi 250 Supersprint but these never put into production.
Over the years JAWA released various models like; 2000 JAWA 125, 2005 and 6 JAWA 650.
JAWA Motorcycles are also known for their high strength endurance and had won 15 times World Trophy and 17 times Silver Vase Trophy in International Six Days Trial together with CZ Motorcycles.
JAWA continues to sell its iconic 350cc two-stroke twin cylinder engines
On 2016, Mahindra and Mahindra acquired the rights of JAWA Motorcycles through its subsidiary called Classic Legends.
To this day, the iconic JAWA and Yezdi motorcycles have a strong cult following for their legenday two-stroke engines and will always be owner’s pride.

My late father rode a 250cc Jawa from Punjab to Scotland in 1968. He had visited Prague on his way and was interviewed on Czech TV.

Sunny Garewal Yeah! The magazine “Dharmayug” did a feature on my father’s unique motorcycle trip. Since he couldn’t get a Pakistan visa, he rode to Mumbai, then went by ship to Kuwait and then rode from there to Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Germany, Belgium, England, Scotland. Yes, all on a 250cc, two-stroke, Jawa. He was quite a celebrity when he returned to Punjab!

"J" in Czech is spelled like English "Y" soo proper spelling is "Yava", same with company founder František Janeček, the surname spelling is "Yanechek". Nice video i didn't knew before that Jawa was exported to India.

5:38 that is NOT the 350 two-stroke engine, it is definately a 4-stroke. I came here because I came across the new models that have been launched, so I got interested in the history of Jawa in India. I wish the new models would be avaiable world wide, not only in India.

We had a 125 Jawa cz with a chrome tank motocross bike that we converted into a flat tracker in the 70s we actually won some races cool bike red frame

yezdi was produced in 1974 not 1968. till 1973 only jawa was available.
Good information about Jawa
We are seeing photos of 4-Stroke engines, but nothing is being said about them.
The first JAWA motorcycle shown at 0:47 is not a 2-Stroke.
The engine shown at 5:32 is a 2-cylinder 4-Stroke engine.
OHV means Overhead Valve. OHC means Overhead Cam. Both refer to 4-Stroke engines !
We have a jawa 250 which was converted to 500cc diesel motor back at 70-80s..but it is in bad shape currently....will restore it..♥️

1:38 Wrong pictures buddy... 1946 Was time of Jawa 250 Pérák and you have Jawa 250 Special That was produced 1934-1940 and second one is Jawa 350 OHV produced 1935-1946.. Original Pérák was introduced in 1946 and It wa boom... Good video and I hope that Jawa in Czech republic will make some nice oldschool Jawa again.. The new Jawa classic is good looking bike and Jawa should be ashamed that they give license to their brand to Mahindra and not make one them self.. I hope Jawa Made in Czech republic (or Czechoslovakia maybe who knows what will happen in future) will be as good as they were.

Seems like the history of Euro-Built-Jawa-CZ was neglected in favor of a pro-Indian focus. As an owner of a 1974 Jawa/CZ 175cc street bike, I was interested in learning more of that bike's history. I doubt I am alone in my view/desire of such.

When this motorcycle will be launch in INDIA? I heard that mahendra company was step forward to launch this motorcycle into the market on 2016 but still the motorcycle was not launched yet, did you know any information about launching this vehicle? Did you so give me a reply...

2:08 I have never seen that machine before, (probably somewhere in Europe), but that machine is from about 1980, (give or take one year), and after the more free Japanese put them out of business. This was not a production bike I am pretty sure, and maybe a last effort to be relevant in MX again. It is the most advanced CZ MX bike I have ever seen.
I want to know the history of the CZ factory, and I can't find it on YT. I wanted to know if the factory was once pretty free from communism, and then died under communism.
I guess I will have to find that information somewhere else but YT.

So looking over a historical timeline of Czechoslovakia, I see communism took control in late 48 into 1949, so I am pretty sure that is the reason why Jawa went to India in 1951.
Now I am sure some in India are figuring out, (as I did in the ISA), the more free market people can exercise, the more communism can take over.

The Jawa two stroke engine is most definitely NOT based on a Honda engine. It was developed in secret by the factory while being occupied by the Nazis during WW2. While your info on Indian built Jawas may be correct, you really should get your facts right if you are going to publish a video on the history of Jawa.
Also, you show photos of fourstroke engines and describe them as two strokes - do you actually know the difference?

Dear Yunus, I have a 1983 model Yezdi Classic 250 bike, bought @ Rs.8,048 all inclusive. I have driven this bike for 3,96,000 kms till now and it is doing still well with around 30 kms per litre mileage. Only problem is getting genuine spare parts and when I get the local parts, they don't lost long and very very expensive.

Why you not explain word jawa where come from ? Because word jawa have a lot mean. Jawa is populated island in the world. Located in indonesia. Jawa mean too a tribe and etnic of jawa. But i realise there are different pronounciation and how to write. In english V = W but in indonesia W = V . for example when you said jawa but as indonesian i heard java in other hand if you write java but you pronounciation as jawa . if don't believe me. JAWA is basically from Czech. Rep. (Czechoslovakia - Old name), At Cz J pronounced as G.. means it's real pronounciation is GAWA and writing is JAWA. I visited at Czech. Rep. 3 times and till today they love this legendary brand. Some old people keep these models in factory condition till today. They loves RE 350/500 from India too.
As per me, Old models of JAWA was good, morden design is not so much appealing....
Hey Rashnesh, thanks for pointing out your observations. I'm actually from the Czech Republic and I have to correct you a bit unfortunately. Jawa is not spelled Gawa here, Its more like Yawa starting same as yellow. It really sounds a lot like Java, the islad. It has nothing to do with it though. Its derived from name of František Janeček (Yanechek phonetically in English). Who bought the licence for motorcycle company Wanderer, he merged first two letters of each and thus the brand JAWA begun its existence. Best regards. Dominik
