This is a recording made by Vasantrao Deshpande on Sept 10, 1961 at a private residence of a friend [Appasaheb Inamdar - after Satyanarayana pooja held] - This is part of an audio letter, made for a Kumar-ji's friend Ramrao Deshmukh. On tabla is Appasaheb Inamdar - on tanpuras are Vilasrao and Jaymala Shiledar - and very prominent people in the small gathering, (Vasantrao, Vamanrao, N.R. Marulkar, etc) -- The other pieces recorded apart from this Malkauns are a new Nirguni bhajan and Gaara.
He was a philosopher of Music. "Thaynche vaibhav aaglech hote"! PL said. His grandeur was class apart. He did not care for BR or PVC. Great was his sense of humour! How much physical tribulation he went through! Said: I am not handicapped in losing one lung. God has given most of the things in twos! We need to light a lamp for those stood by him always: Vasundhara tai, PL, Rahul Barpute, Guruji Chichalkar.

When he died I read some where that there were merely 24 hrs of his recordings available . Thanks to generous souls like you I hve heard what I missed and belive me it is many times more than 24 hrs and credit goes to generous souls like you . I just can not not thank you enough .
I started liking his music when i heard him singing for Doordadshan when Mrs Indiara Gandhi was assiassinated. He was singing Nirgun Bhajans and there was something I liked instantly. and kept tuning in to transistor and Sangeet ka akihil bhartiya karyakaram and one programe on Sundays on national network of TV just to hear him once again . I could not listen to him live and that is my regret.
@drakv1952 Dear DrAKV1952, Thank you for your comment. What can be said about Kumarji other than that he was in a class of his own, the very best. Awards are mere trinkets of popularity contests and popularity is the hallmark of the mediocrity. For Kumarji's unparalleled genius, there is no contest.
Very very good - beyond description. I congratulate the Uploader. Many Thanks. I wonder why Kumar Gandharva was not awarded Bharat Ratna. He deserved it much more than others. Blame it on politics ???????????? in classical music too??

this is one of the best Malkauns i have heard. crystal clear voice of pandit ! whah ! The way he started "Ananda Manaa" is such a beauty !
