    Cool to see some softer topics like this on Computerphile! This is a hugely undervalued skill, and the tool seems pretty neat

    Data visualization is a great and diverse topic. It gets very interesting and challenging when you try to visualize relationships between things beyond a few dimensions/parameters. Hope to see more of this in the future!

    What a great vocal recording to back up a really interesting topic. There's something quite captivating in his delivery.

    I always find this to be a highly non-linear process, by the time I organize the data in a way that makes sense, my approach changes to suit what I've learnt so far. So I stick to low cost visualizations like a nested list in notepad since they get discarded often.

    • @lens07
      @lens07 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. The diagram showing the different stages (boxes) of sense-making actually has many arrows going backwards and forwards (not that obvious) in the video, indicating that this is an iterative process. A very interesting point about the low-cost tool, so it can be easily updated (or even restarted) as the understanding of the problem changes. Will include that in the design of the next iteration of sensemap.

    I loved this, I'll definitely have to give the extension a shot! This could be huge, data and analysis is what we're all about

  • @djyotta
    @djyotta ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Yup, my perseverance in searching out the "best" solution definitely determines my metric. After 30 tabs, I develop a metric which helps me reduce the tabs to 3 or 4. I pick an arbitrary set of "deal breakers" that whittle down to 2 options. Then I decide which one feels the "best". It's terrible logic, but gets the job done and I have some confidence I have one of the near optimal outcomes.

    • @jursamaj
      @jursamaj ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not terrible at all. In the 1st place "optimal" is extremely vague, because what we want and how much we want it is vague. And even if it were definite, you could research forever and not be sure of making *the* optimal choice. Your method avoids the things that would be a real problem for you, and gets you to something you're happy with for reasonable effort.

    It's a bummer that SenseMap is not available as a Firefox extension. Otherwise I would have liked to integrate the tool into my workflow.

    I really like great data visualization. In fact, I often complain when there is bad visualizations. For example people just do bar charts instead of histograms - or even violin plots.

    Whenever talking about data visualization, it's rather obligatory to mention *Edward Tufte's* book _"The Visual Display of Quantitative Information."_ Of course, Kai wasn't talking about data visualization in the traditional sense. As others have pointed out, the tool he demonstrated is a so-called *_mind-map._* I love mind-maps; I use them extensively for taking notes, analyzing issues, and making decisions. And yes-as Kai himself pointed out-the tool that he showed does require a lot more engineering to make it usable!

    I think this would be really useful if it could take in information on lots of users page views and output information about the different paths customers take through a product.

    The graph about the camera information gathering reminds me of all the classes in manufacturing technology as minor/major in engineering and how it all felt like extremely unnecessary hand-waving that is common sense put into "method" and analysed. Of course valuable in some contexts, but just observing it felt so empty of value. This graph however would indeed help the process if you were to compare cameras like I did with plenty of different models that were of the same line and such before I ended up choosing what to buy.

    • @jursamaj
      @jursamaj ปีที่แล้ว

      "Common sense" is so often wrong. A method to analyze stuff is much better.

    This will be very cool as Chrome/Edge extension. Basically a history of how you got to the current page on the tab. When exploring I find myself opening 10+ tabs from say a search then diving deeper and many times I just lose context from switching tabs and I have no idea how I got there.
    Edit: The problem really lies with Chrome/Edge, not being able to 'remember' the previous page when you open it in a new tab. Unlike 'duplicate tab' which does remember.

    This would be a killer app for my dad. He spends hours of research for any routine initiative. I never understood it. I just pay a bit more or hire a professional - never had a problem in my life

    • @tbird-z1r

      Sometimes I think people just enjoy the research.
      It's like when you spend two hours writing a program to automate something you only actually need to do once and it would have taken ten minutes. It's not the destination, it's the journey.

    but now by creating visualised data of ourselves considering a camera at $700 and marking it 'fair price'-even though our budget is £500, we have given the wife all the evidence she needs to begin schematising her next move. i think we should restrategize. there has to be an easier way.

    169 views for a channel that have 2 mil subies. I am surprised that it has 2 mil subies since the content overall on this channel is very technical far more technical than other knowledge sharing based YT channels. I can barely follow some of the videos and I have an almost finished degree in computer science.

    You have a major problem here. If the wife thinks £500 is good enough for a camera. If you are that child in 20 - 30 years time and look back, and that that best camera, what would you say to your parents? :-)
