14:39 The reason why your items didn’t despawn is because the chunks weren't loaded. It is also referred to as a ticking area. Which is basically the chunks of area around a player that are where time passes in ticks. In this area, crops grow, mobs spawn, and command blocks function as intended. But when the player leaves the ticking area, time stops. Crops do not grow, mobs won't spawn, and command blocks stop functioning. Spawn is always a ticking area, even when the player isn’t at spawn. So time will still pass normally at spawn. The 5-minute timer will only come into play when you have been in the chunks where the items were for 5 minutes without picking them up. Then they will despawn. I hope this answered your question!

quick tip, based from that fact, if you want to extend the time as long as possible when searching for the items, lower your render distance, that way you don't load the chunks too early. I'm sure someone will correct me if this is wrong

Around 14:45 when your items didn't despawn, it's because the chunks the items were in weren't loaded. Once items are loaded, then they despawn. It's why you can die in the end, run back to your portal, and retrieve your items even if more than 5 minutes passed.

its also why you should get at least the most basic gear before heading out to retrieve said items. unless you died in the spawn chunks or very close to your base (like a cave under it for example) you dont have to rush at all. get basic tools, some food and then go on. ive had situations like this in multiplayer, sometimes taking over an hour to retrieve my stuff and i just tell the other people online to not go where i died so they dont load the chunks with my stuff by accident. the only time you actually need to rush is when you get to those chunks so its best to be prepared then so you can be super fast about it

Yup, I died early in a world one time and didn’t have coordinates on so had no idea where I died but happened to go by the same place months later and my items were still there.

A despawn timer for items is only active if the item is LOADED. the entire world of Minecraft is not loaded at the same time (imagine a computer loading a million chunks at once). The chunk where your items were only got loaded back into the game once you got 8-16 chunks within the items depending on your render distance. That is when the timer truly began. If you died in the nether (away from the portal) your items would stay there infinitely, as long as no one ever went to where you died.
If the chunk is loaded not the item. The timer is 5 minutes in a loaded chunk

a tip from a walkin wiki: item despawn timer doesn't tick down when the chunk is unloaded, so if you turn the simulation distance down, the items will be unloaded for longer, especially if ur lost :D

the thing about the 5 minutes despawn is that the items despawn in 5 minutes if they are in a loaded chunk, if you are far away or in another dimension they never despawn (thats why you can take your time to prepare before going back for your stuff in the nether for example)

The items didn’t de-spawn because the chunks weren’t loaded. TLDR outside spawn chunks, the chunks aren’t loaded unless players are nearby or you have a chunk loader. Hope this helps

To answer your question as to why your items didn’t despawn (about 15:00 ), the timer only starts when the chunks are loaded in, so as long as you’re out of range of them they won’t go anywhere
