Mathew has the soul of an artist. Very touching to hear his advice and to listen to how he really gets into the subject in a deep way. Thank you for these interviews Jeff.
If Matthew doesn't teach, doesn't do commissions, but only paints what he wants on mini sizes, this is an incredible example of a full time artist making it purely on his own choice - artworks! This business model is a dream for most of us, the marketing side of it needs to be unpacked and sold as a book! Matthew's artwork is awesome of coz too!
There was a syndicated cartoon called BC, by the cartoonist Johnny Hart, which features a group of cavemen and anthropomorphic animals from various geologic eras. That description of prehistoric kids drawing on the walls of caves made me think of his cartoons. Some of them were pretty funny. Wonderful interview by the way.
The question with white, and when it dries, I have a friend who does super large paintings and he always mixes a lot of color and also ‘oils’ them out after they dry before he puts the second layer on.. it seems to work for him.❤
Jeff- where in Salt Lake do you get your ABS board for $25 a sheet? I’ve tried calling around a few places in SLC for ABS board and am getting quotes of $118-$146 for a 4’ x 8’ sheet. Great podcast by the way-
What about "oiling in" in order to get the right value once the paint has dried and sunk in, I just apply a little of oil or whatever medium I'm using diluted in a little solvent so that it's not forming a "varnish layer" If I am not going to paint into that exact area again and just need to match the value.

Great to hear how the artist approaches paintings 🖼️
Fun discussion. It was like hanging out with you two at the kitchen table! Color charts 😆

His work reminds me of Peter Poska. Really beautiful! I don't think Matthew knows how good he is.

If your using acrylic gesso and you want a less absorbent surface, mix matte medium into gesso.

This is not an issue of sunken in colors having different values. It’s an issue of the paint actually changing value ever so slightly.
And what is causing it to change value slightly?
The oil in the paint dries slightly darker than when in its fluid form.
Fun discussion!
Speaking of Graydon Parrish, could you please please please get him on the podcast??!!
Great stuff as always. Sir would you ever consider an "aviation" artist to interview on your show? Would aviation art be considered historical art?
You had mentioned a podcaster named Karen ( maybe Weine Burke ?) where can I find her? I do t think even your transcript caught her name right 🤪
Where do they sell ABS?
