  • Let's say I have a chart with 1 dimension and 3 measures. I want to make sorting the bar chart by any of the measures as easy as possible. In this tip, I show you how I use parameter actions to sort the bar charts based on the measure I select.

I'm struggling to find the contextual application. When might you employ this?

Often you'll have three measures in a chart for comparing them. In this case, we're comparing where a sub-category ranks in one measure vs. the others. The action eliminates the need for a sort button and gives the user flexibility to sort the data as they choose.

Another question Andy: I know every parameter needs at least a calculated field to function and mostly in these calculated fields, the parameters are mentioned/stated for the linkage. Where is this done in this case? Is that what takes place through the Action “change parameter values’ ?

The parameter gets populated with the action. The parameter is then referenced in the calculated field to determine which of the 3 measures to return.

Hi Andy, thanks for this tip. Now my question: How can one deduce he/she needs these calculated text fields (sales text, qty text and profit text)please? Does it come by experience? I ask because I tried to omit them and also list my parameters but I faced a hurdle and had to just go by your steps to arrive at the final goal. Thanks once again and God bless you.

Yes, I’d say it comes with experience. You need those fields because you need each action to work independently of the others.
