A side effect that wasn’t mentioned was the cost almost $4000 a month and no insurance will approve it so you have to jump through hoops to get it paid for and the manufacturer might pay for it for a year or two and then they’ll stop and you’re back at square one.
I am happy to see SPMS being addressed. Thank you for bringing this new medication to our attention! This is definitely a step in the right direction for SPMS patients by having an option for therapy.
Thanks so much! Just started Mayzent and this was so informative. I pray I just have a good outcome after trying other disease modifying therapies. I have had bad experiences and know that I have to be on something to slow the progression. This was so helpful!
Thanks doc, I'm a nurse trying to better explain to patients their treatment plan, well after their provider has prescribed this medication. Patients get uneasy when you start screening them prior to FDO, this breakdown with all the data included will definitely help with calming patients and even I understand it better now. Great work!
I used it after 8 years of Gilenya. I didn't last a year because with each Pfizer dose I got relapse😔 Switched to Mavenclad but got two horrible relapses because of the rebound effect. Now, my neuro is considering Kesimpta. This goes to show how MS and external factors make this disease so challenging to treat at times
@@DrBrandonBeaber yes, my health insurance took over a month to authorize Mavenclad. I was about two weeks without medication😔 I know that there isn't supposed to be a wash out period, and my neuro was explaining that to the case manager. Unfortunately, my health insurance company didn't comply. Their ignorance on autoimmune diseases/ rebound activity not only affected me, but also friends of mine who were previously on Gilenya.
I’m getting prepared to start this med as just moved to SPMS. THANK YOU for this video! I’m a tad nervous but this made things a lot clearer! Shared w family.
Wow lot of downsides with this drug. Not much to pick from having SPMS I guess. Cladribine seems to be a much better choice? Love to see a video about rebound effect in general and your thoughts about all the possible mechanisms at play. Thx for the Vid
Thanks for the video suggestion. I'll make a note of it. This phenomenon occurs with "immunosequestrants" (medications which entrap lymphocytes but do not destroy them).
Thank you for this informative video (as always!) I am about to start Ponesimod, so I would be very interested in a video how/if the different S1P1 receptor modulators differ in terms of efficacy and side effects 🙂 !
Hi doctor, I have been following you since ages. Your videos taught me a lot about MS. I really would you like to know your opinion in something, please. I have rrms since 2019, I never went on medication. But now, my neuro made me think of joining to the study of comparing Evobrutinib with Teriflunomide (Aubagio) with no placebo-only arm. As the study is blinded, no-one would know which medication group you would be placed into. I really want to take Evobrunitib but not sure taking Aubagio is a good idea. Your video about Aubagio is pretty old one, I assume this drug is not even so popular. What should I take into consideration about Aubagio?
Hello Dr.Brandon..on November of 2022 my left side started feeling it took 3 weeks to recover after few studies in March I was diagnosed with MS ...between June and back to Nov I had few episodes not like the first one minor ones ...I started on Mazent about 2 weeks ago I feel the same or even worse in other personal matters ....my main question to you is .How long I have to wait on the medication to feel a different on me if is going to work for me ????
Dr. Brandon, what's your opinion on taking Mayzent after experiencing a junctional heart rhythm after taking Gilenya for 11 years? I immediately changed to Aubagio when the heart rhythm abnormality was noted, but ended up with a relapse 11 months after switching. When I had the relapse, I switched to Ocrevus. I really loved Gilenya and lived well on it for a decade, is Mayzent an option? My cardiologist said it's not a "never again" but he is wary of the heart issues coming back.
I can't give you personal advice, but you can read the product label of mayzent section 5.3 on this topic: www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2019/209884s000lbl.pdf
I can't give you personal advice, but there is a possible link to skin cancer. "An initial analysis estimated the likelihood of developing any skin cancer on a given drug after accounting for age, gender, country, use of immunosuppressants, corticosteroids, and use of multiple DMTs. Results showed that Mayzent had the greatest association, increasing the likelihood of skin cancer by 9.7 times." multiplesclerosisnewstoday.com/news-posts/2022/02/22/more-skin-cancer-reported-patients-oral-dmts-gilenya-mayzent-fda-real-world-data-analysis/#:~:text=An%20initial%20analysis%20estimated%20the,skin%20cancer%20by%209.7%20times.
hello dotors well the does not work my feet But I treated many doctors in Pakistan, but he says to me that this is a neouro disease callad multiple sclerosis
Thank you for the great information Dr Brandon, I always enjoy your explanations on the different dmts. Listening to what you said about this particular therapy I think I will stick with tysabri for now.
I was excited about a new MS drug. From what you said sounds good but then the side effects... I have been avoided all MS drugs. Expect for copaxone, they all got crazy side effects or you can get a incurable brain disease.
what are you doing Leisha Heili : posting a link on a Mayzent video by a neurologist .I assume its inapproriate since your comment says only for over 18s .Shame on you !

Yikes if you were my doctor taking about how there’s benefits and risks and that you recommend your patients to get vaccinated, I’d walk out the door in a heart beat. I got nothing against you but I hate this concept where we have to weigh benefits and the risks, I was one of those people who ended up taking a medication and was told that exact line and I only gained cons so I find it disturbing you’d tell people when your job is to make sure people are healthy, if you play russian roulette with people’s and see adverse events as just numbers, you are no somebody id want to see for professional help.
I'm not sure what you mean. Virtually everything has some risk. According to one source, "Each year, the side effects of long-term NSAID [over the counter medications like ibuprofen and naproxen] use causes nearly 103,000 hospitalizations and 16,500 deaths" www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2005/01/050111123706.htm#:~:text=Each%20year%2C%20the%20side%20effects,cancer%20in%20the%20United%20States. Sorry to hear about our experience. Out of curiosity, was there a significant gap between mayzent and mavenclad?

Dr. Beaber have you had patients with difficulties after coming off Mayzent? Cardiovascular or rebound?
Great educational video Doc. Ty for covering the meds that are contraindications with it.

My opinion is that they have very similar efficacy and side effect profiles.

Thanks. Tysabri is likely more effective overall than S1P receptor modulators.
Do any MS drugs have the potential to impact the aorta?
Specifically the Aorta? I can't think of any side effect of the aorta with any MS DMT off the top of my head.
Data for Cladribine for SPMS is actually very good, cf Barts, London, protocol
Stick to MS. You're not a judge of who is and who isn't anti-vax. Prasad is absolutely anti-vax and it becomes clearer every day.
Thank you very much for this overview of Mayzent. Greetings from Europe from a fellow physician :)
