Steve and Sara, I think there might be a couple of solutions to your chair rail issue lying flat to the wall. 1. Use shims to take up the gap. Either wood or styrofoam like material. It's the stuff that some ceiling medallions are made of. You would try to insert with the narrow end going downward behind the rail and trim off the excess at the bottom. You paint them and it will be far less fiddly than trying to shape the rail to the uneven wall. 2. Terry and Ash at LaLacelle made their own molding using some kind of poured latex like material that was actually tons better than it sounds. Personally, I would use shims. I cannot believe how perfect that wallpaper and paint color goes so well in that room! Bravo and brava!
A BIG CANADIAN CONGRATULATIONS!!! Just a stunning job, and LOVE Vincent's reaction, as well as the puppy's. If you haven't found a solution to the wood chair rail moulding gaps, there are (not so bad as many might think) plastic or polystyrene trims that easily bend and contour to even the worst wall conditions. We've had to use similar even in brand new construction homes. Terry and Ash from Chateau Lalacelle have used them incredibly successfully in the restoration of their property. GREAT JOB to you both!
You could add a quarter-round piece of trim to the top (and bottom as needed) since caulk won’t fill enough. Once painted it should look fine. Try a couple different diameters but i think 1/4” should do it.
Add a thin strip to the rail that is more flexible. [Doesn't have to be wood - the guys at La Lacelle use it alot.] That being said, IT LOOKS AMAZING!!! 👏👏👏
Hey guys, nice job. Look up the work at the Chateau de Lalacel , instead of wood they buy trims of some plastic flexibility material that makes easier for them to apply to funky walls. They go over with the color they want and it looks like wood
I believe that is the most beautiful wallpaper I have EVER seen!! The pattern is not overwhelming & I love that there is a break in the pattern at the top!! So many designs of wallpapers are so busy & dizzying. You have chosen well! The room will be stunning! Your meticulous & careful planning have paid off!! Bravo, Steve & Sara!! 🇺🇸
No panic! There may be a solution for the chair rail. Drill holes in the rail and the wall and put plugs in the wall. The use long screws and screw the rail tight. Make sure the screws sink a bit into the rail. Then fill the holes over the screws, sand, paint. Make sure to use the glue on the rail as well for extra strength. I did the same once, worked perfectly!
We have renovated 11 houses and have done exactly that on wobbly brick walls. One has to decide on dado that has ins and outs versus packing behind, as one viewer suggested and hoping glue will stick
That may be asking too much of those old walls, which were often built from sand, straw and mortar... a tight screw may end up popping out a section of the wall plaster...
I love the wallpaper and trim color. A beautiful job! Tiny thing I'd change....ivory candles to replace the colored ones on the gorgeous hanging light. You two are amazing!
From the gorgeous paint, to the exquisite paper down to the finest place settings in a dining room fit for some of the finest people I've ever seen. I fell in love with you both on Chateau Diaries and look what you've done! Bravo! Bravo!
I have no idea what to do with the trim because I would still be crying trying to do the math for the wallpaper! Absolutely beautiful and you two have the perfect personalities for this. Congrats on another great project!
my non mathematical brain would join your tears. lol. I was much impressed but having panic attacks about it. lol. Its ok for me to say that.. I DO get diagnosed panic attacks. lol.
Seriously, this is one of the most beautiful rooms I’ve ever seen. Bravo! I’m also amazed at how well you work together-my husband and I could never accomplish what you did!
I LOVE the wallpaper! The room looks beautiful 😍 But you should consider, changing the name. Chateax don't have Cafés - they have diningrooms and breakfast rooms 😉 If you notice, Vincente even called it the breakfast room😁 Now, the room really just needs a nice guilt mirror (could even be round or oval, if that means no decapitated birds😉), over the fireplace, and a romantic, guilt mantel clock! 😊 And I will have to agree with several comments, that the breakfast room is now the prettiest room in the Chateau. But... That just wont do... The Dining room should certainly compete for that title, so I really hope Vincente had some ideas and inspiration for that 😁😁😁
@@mariahoulihan9483 If its called the "café", that would probably make sense- but I have actually not heard them say that either. To me, because of all the storage, I would think it was actually a butlers pantry - but it does seem very large for that. And I don't think it has been altered. But anyway, that is why I went with Breakfast room. Especially with the new, beautiful paint and wallpaper! And it would make sense for a Chateau, to have a seperate dining- and breakfast room 🙂
Steve and Sarah - incredible! The wallpaper is a work of art in itself but makes the room so serenely beautiful . I can’t believe how all the extra touches from lights to table setting all tie in to the theme. Wonderful, well done both of you!👏👌🥰
Congratulations guys! As a fellow Canadian ( who happens to be terrible in Math) you have my greatest respect and admiration! It’s just PERFECT!! 👏👏❤️🍷💐🇨🇦
What a beautiful job guys 🎉🎉🎉 and Steve, so well done for the plan!! I loved Vincent's awestruck reaction 😊thought he was going to cry!😀 The gifted lamp is now complemented by the decor 👌 When you get a solution for the chair rail, that will finish it off beautifully 💜 All the best, Suzanne
I think the room turned out beautifully. I also think that your chair railing could benefit from some extra depth and dimention. It seems out of proportion when taking in the height of the room and the scale of the paper. I would add another horizontal piece, perhaps another 3-4" to increase the total vertical height of your chair rail. I would also bump it out into the room slightly, perhaps 1" to 1.5" this would allow you to shim the entire length of chair railing parallel to the wall, as if the wall was straight. Then you could scribe the top piece to match the wall, and caulk across the bottom as this would not be as noticable. It's hard for me to discribe, but you would have three pieces of trim total that act as one. Two verticle to the wall and one horizontal to the wall on top scribed to fit the wall.
Regarding the wonky wall where you are trying to apply chair moulding to the wall. Think like a seamstress that you are. Can you make small slit cuttings to the back of the moulding to allow it to bend to the surface of the wall? Like the small cuttings you make when sewing a curve. Then possibly fill with wood putty. Good luck.
Hi Steve, wonderful job. You could paint a faux decorative moulding on the wall, like Michael did at Lalande. You are an artist, you got this. Same with the little gap, you could pull it together with a little painted design which would make the gap unnoticeable. 💕🇦🇺🤪
Oh my giddy aunt, your cafe room is so beautiful! I thought your surprise guest was going to be Dee, but wonderful to see Vincent and his expert admiration. 😊 I can imagine that Stephen’s layout planning could become a component in Little Greenes wallpaper sales program. I agree with the suggestion of shims to settle the chair rail issue. Wonky walls galore, your nemesis. Ah, chateaux problems! I loved your before and after shots, the before wasn’t as harsh looking as I had remembered, but the after is a revelation! A suggestion- pat each other on the back, less chance of injury! ❤ Enjoy your new sunny space!
Oh it's fabulous! Steve that was genius working off that plan you created. Wish I had a suggestion for the wood rail but I'm sure one of your viewers will come up with something. Very well done! Maybe Amaury at Le Lande can give you a tip since he works with wood so much.
Of all the chateau owners I follow this is my favorite room ever...only you will know there is a boo boo in that corner...it's simply stunning...GREAT JOB
The room looks stunning, and everything perfectly matching. On the trim could you embed some screws through the wood then fill with wood filler and paint, maybe cork on the top edge . Maybe talk to Escape to the Dream guys as they have had similar problems with there walls.
I, personally, promise to never look at the wallpaper mess in the corner. Ever. Cross my heart. 😂❤ What an amazing difference between the purple, and yellow, and the beautifully magical garden. Well done, both of you. What a vision you had.
Make wooden or mdf shims by fitting a plank accurately to the irregular surface to get the profile then cutting off the portion that will be used to pack out the back of the dado rail. This will be glued to the back of the dado. Another method would’ve to kerf cut the dado rail halfway through from the back with a fine saw at regular intervals so it bends easily. The kerfs are later filled before painting.
My suggestion for the dado rail gaps: Add masking tape on the wallpaper at the top and bottom of the dado rail then fill the gap with expanding foam. I’d then trim the foam level with the rail once dry and then paint the foam to match the dado rail.
The room is simply gorgeous. The colours are perfect. I was impressed with the placement of the branches in the wallpaper pattern; in fact, I thought you were painting the wall at first glance! Not many people take this care and the effort shows. Congratulations, Steve and Sara. Job perfectly done! I will use this method if I ever wallpaper again. Thank you!! I wish I could help with the chair rail issue, but I'm sure someone who is watching knows what to do. I love the radiators you've chosen. They disappear. The colour of the floor is like a forest floor and finishes the effect. Lovely.
Add another small "coved" piece of moulding ( Flat top, curved face) to the top of the existing moulding and fill the join with putty and paint to match.
Get some tubes of caulk and a caulking gun. Tape on the wall above crack to protect paper. Clean carefully with damp paper towels. Paint caulking to match moulding. Terry and Ash used a flexible, moulded moulding on their current project. Check it out for future wavy walls.
WOW! What a transformation! Remembering it with the cupboards open and all the stuff on the table.... it seems huge now. Terry at LaLacelle used chair railing made of polystyrene. It's flexible, so you could bend it and glue it directly to the wall.
The room is MAGICAL!!!! Very, very well done, you two. The paper is gorgeous and goes so well with the marble of the fireplace. Anyone would feel amazing having breakfast in that year round Garden Room. No imagination needed, just warm bread, butter, and hot coffee! All the best to you both.
One solution will be to install the moulding with thin screws and anchors and then fill up the holes to cover the screw heads and repaint. It will take time but it will push the moulding onto the uneven wall and the gap to feel will be narrower.
Hi Sarah & Steve, I am in awe and totally amazed at the end result of the wallpapered cafe. Scrap the painted wood and get poly...something which is a lot more flexible. Also it may be a better idea to use a nail gun to attatch the trim. I think the end result is perfection. Mark & Scott
Compressor nails, can hold that wood molding in place, have seen other castle owners do it because the walls are crooked... I LOVE the flower look. ❤❤❤
Awesome papering skills. Mine are average but many years ago we went to help 2 friends wallpaper their lounge. We prepped the walls etc and measured up and cut the first drop on a pasting table in the next room. Suddenly realised Christine was missing. We found her in the 'cutting room' looking very triumphant and with a stack of wallpaper beside her. "I have cut all the rolls to the right size so they are all ready for you" Indeed they were all the same length but it was a patterned wallpaper with an 18 inch repeat! 😢 Cue much cussing and swapping round. We only had to buy 2 new rolls in the end! I will never forget it though!
Absodamn lootley you should be proud. Clever brains at work, saved your sanity! Since you asked! I think the floor needs to go darker, less red. Re dado gap. I suggest silicone behind to fill in some of the larger areas. Can tint silicone , paint over too to match walls .
I think paintable silicone is an excellent idea. In the largest gaps that won’t glue, try gluing a thin slice of wood to the wall, then glue the chair rail to that. I’d add finishing nails as well. You could also talk to Terry at Chateau Lalasal about flexible molding.
I loved Vincent's excitement as much as I love the new room!! This room is absolutely stunning. You both are to be congratulated for your patience and skill!!!!
Just STUNNING!! You two are amazing and such perfectionists - I'm sure your future guests and friends will absolutely every minute they spend at this beautiful chateau with such charming and congenial hosts 😍
A low expansion door and window frame foam could fill the gap partially. Then fill the remainder with wood putty. Also don't just glue, glue and then nail so the trim doesn't pop off the wall.
Steve can paint an optical illusion rail like Michael did at Stephanie's perhaps?? And a bit of light green paint in the gap behind the pipes perhaps? Looking very good! Tres Magnifique!
The transformation is amazing. Nothing beats good taste, a good eye, and know how. Planning the wallpaper ahead via the computer is not for the faint of heart. You might be finding yourselves with work ahead that you hadn't planned on--- people wanting your services !!! Bravo what a beautiful room.
Escape to the Dreams Chateau owners, Terri and Ash used a polystyrene trim for their current 401? Suite when wood material was too inflexible and could not bend. You might contact them as they were able to paint the trim exactly to match other materials in that room. This was just recently in last month's vlog. They would be happy to assist!
You could use polyurethane trim that will bend to the wave in the wall and be light weight and easy to glue on. Ash & Terry have used it in their 400 Suite in their chateau and it looks beautiful.
The most beautiful room that you've done so far! Simple and elegant. Would love to see wall sconce lights flanking the lovely mantle! That vase is stunning! My favorite room.
Now whats the next DIY ? That tooooo yellow kitchen? Maybe do a slightly lighter "green" so that the rooms 'FLOW" together ...love the wallpaper..good job.
You should be proud of yourselves! Could you use a small wallpaper or even a fabric steamer on the moldings to give them a little more flex? I imagine the two of you having meals in this room when it's just the two of you. ❤
We have an oak floor that is treated with Bona lacquer which is very hard wearing. You can get, different finishes and for us lasted over 7 years without refinishing. I clean it using the Bonacleaner and their microfibre applicator/mop. It protects and shines, is quick to use much easier than a mop and bucket and dries quickly.❤
An idea for the dado rail......there are flexible and semi flexible moldings with lots of different patterns that can be obtained to attach to your wavery walls. I'm renovating a bedroom and found these on Etsy. My house was built in 1945, not plumb, and a little wonky.
You should be darn proud of yourselves! That room is absolutely stunning! With respect to the Dado rail, could you slice the wood from behind in small sections (where it wouldn't show on top) vertically to your wall to allow it to "flex" to the wall surface? Otherwise, I'd say make a mold and use the latex product that Terry and Ash used to make a flexible molding. A lot more work, but then it would be "perfect." I'm so glad you got rid of that lavender. I like lavender, but it has it's place and it was just too much of a dichotomy. The green is so much more quiet! And of course, the lamp now goes with the room!
The room turned out beautifully! Enjoy !NOTE: railing... buy flexible railing OR use the wood you have and silicon the gaps, and painting the filler the same coor as the wood. Works/looks perfect every time!
WOW, stunning! I cant believe how amazing this looks! PLEASE MAKE YOUR NEXT PROJECT taking down that wallpaper in your entrance! Let the light in that beautiful room. Seeing this………I know it will be spectacular! IT is simply a giant job! But it is one of those things, THAT WILL CHANGE EVERYTHING ❤ 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I’ve used Ekena brand moulding here is US that is more flexible. Alternative is to scribe a flat piece to the wall and mount your trim to that- fill the top seam with wood filler/caulk and paint. It Would result in a greater projection from the wall and be painstaking but could work. Flexible moulding seems the easiest route. The room looks stunning.
Great job! Benoit the Carpenter over in the last episode of "How To Renovate a Chateau" was just putting on trim in the new Master bedroom and he used a nail gun, no glue!
Great work! It looks beautiful. My one thought is that the fireplace looks very small in the room now. It seems that a large mirror above the mantle would help remedy that and also bounce even more light around the garden like room.
Quarter round which s used between Base Boards and the flooring is although wood extremely flexible. I bet if you add a strip of that over your chair rail; it might be flexible enough to bridge the gaps at the top of your chair rail.
Well done! The paint colours & paper are gorgeous together. You two appear to work very well together, with great results. Stunning. Congratulations on a beautiful room. 👍🏻🇨🇦
Congratulations! Little Green should buy your program to use for other buyers of their patterned paper! It sure pays to know the tools one can utilize to be a perfectionist!
Use tiny wood nails to nail in place, putty over the holes, sand and paint over with slightly damp cotton ball to make it blend in with already painted wood
I think you will need to create a caulk with your sawdust to fill the gap, but the paper looks stunning. Hope you both sit back and reallt enjoy it together..
Amazing room! Maybe Steve could paint a bit in the corner to "complete" that area. Suggestion...a bit more of the pink and blues, greenery, on the mantle would help the falling birds stand out. Stacked books?
Scribing the trim piece is probably the best solution, assuming the wall is stone and you can't easily drill into it.. Unless you can find a strong super-fast-drying adhesive and just glue a small portion at a time. Or fill the larger gaps with backer rod (foam tubes) and caulk over top with paintable caulk or sandable epoxy - once it's painted nobody will notice, and you may not yourselves either! The room looks fabulous now, and I bet you wonder how you lived with it until this amazing transformation!
Have been waiting to see the wallpaper go up. It looks fantastic and I'm in awe of your mathematical skills in figuring out how the different panels were going to work. A beautiful room - enjoy!
Franciscan Ivy dinnerware (used on the TV show 'I Love Lucy') would look terrific in this room. Maybe a paper boarder instead of wood for the chair rail.
I love a great ‘before and after’ and yours is amazing ! Such a refreshing room! I have done a number of wallpapering projects but have never tackled a corner so treacherous ! Wow! So happy for you clever people ! ✨
Wow wow wow Sarah and Steve, the paper is beautiful and the whole room is spectacular . Steve you are certainly a bit of a genius working out the maths . Sarah the prep work you put in to the room was amazing and without that the it would not have been as effective . Well done you guys. 😚🇨🇮
Steve and Sara, I think there might be a couple of solutions to your chair rail issue lying flat to the wall. 1. Use shims to take up the gap. Either wood or styrofoam like material. What an amazing transformation. It looks utterly amazing.
That is the prettiest room in the whole chateau!
I think you should do mini models of each room as you renovate and then you can make a doll house of your chateau. Now that would be joy.

I was just about to suggest the same thing! They’re an excellent solution to wonky walls!
You could add a quarter-round piece of trim to the top (and bottom as needed) since caulk won’t fill enough. Once painted it should look fine. Try a couple different diameters but i think 1/4” should do it.
Worth trying... I think the widening & narrowing might bug Steve, but we'll look at it...
Add a thin strip to the rail that is more flexible. [Doesn't have to be wood - the guys at La Lacelle use it alot.]

"I have cut all the rolls to the right size so they are all ready for you"
Indeed they were all the same length but it was a patterned wallpaper with an 18 inch repeat! 😢
Cue much cussing and swapping round.
Thanks Joyce!
I think paintable silicone is an excellent idea. In the largest gaps that won’t glue, try gluing a thin slice of wood to the wall, then glue the chair rail to that. I’d add finishing nails as well. You could also talk to Terry at Chateau Lalasal about flexible molding.
I've been out all day so I am 6 hours late. Have you tried removing some of the back of the trim peices so they are closer to the wall
Put another dado rail on top upside down it will hide any imperfections.
It is so beautiful, you did an amazing job!
The walls are so pretty!!!
You could cut the moulding in half along the length so each piece is more bendy then glue them separately the fill and paint the join
The most beautiful room that you've done so far! Simple and elegant. Would love to see wall sconce lights flanking the lovely mantle! That vase is stunning! My favorite room.
The room is a triumph! The paper and the paint in this sunny room is magnificent.
Now whats the next DIY ? That tooooo yellow kitchen? Maybe do a slightly lighter "green" so that the rooms 'FLOW" together ...love the wallpaper..good job.
To be answered on the next vlog....
What an amazing room now! Who in their right mind would paint a room purple? Truly fabulous.
You should be proud of yourselves! Could you use a small wallpaper or even a fabric steamer on the moldings to give them a little more flex? I imagine the two of you having meals in this room when it's just the two of you. ❤
I absolutely love the room it is a gorgeous, wonderful job, you two.
Stunning transformation, that last shot of the room with the table set- absolutely beautiful should be in the Little Greene brochure
Oh my goodness, how beautiful that room is! It absolutely works, gentle but chic perfectly suiting the chateau. 🍾🍾🍾
Billy Pethrick uses I believe Osmo products on wood at their chateau and convent. It looks very easy to do and gorgeous.
What was once a garish unpleasant little s pace is now a most ethereal garden . Well done. You two are getting better and better.🎉😊
You can cut little lines across the back of the dado rail to make it bend. Sort of like sewing a curved seam.
WOW, stunning! I cant believe how amazing this looks! PLEASE MAKE YOUR NEXT PROJECT taking down that wallpaper in your entrance! Let the light in that beautiful room.
Seeing this………I know it will be spectacular! IT is simply a giant job! But it is one of those things, THAT WILL CHANGE EVERYTHING ❤
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏.
Stunning! An absolutely brilliant job you two. Bravo!
I’m stunned at this makeover. I absolutely love the result. Very well done. The attention to detail is seriously impressive. Love this room. 🇨🇦
Thank you so much!
My idea for the rail gap - Shim and tack nail - wood fill the nail hole and paint over. I LOVE that paper and you guys have done so well! Bravo!
The danged tiny nails just slide out of the old plaster...
You can use scrimp tape. It's a self adhesive gauze tape. Costs 1 euro, & will solve your chair rail dilemma.
Good luck guys.
🙏❤
Use glue and small screws to hold your railing down to the wall. You may need to fill the screw holes and repaint your railings. Best of luck!
