- People talk a lot about how less is more in horror, but what about when more is not only more, but too much?

My favorite heartsinking moment from this game:
Ive taken damage and have no hud, but I've downed all the nearby enemies and can make my way towards a repair station.
The power goes out.
I realize I have no flashlight
I realize I have no distance to objective marker
I realize I have no enemy nearby distance marker
I realize my only squadmate is on the other end of the ship
I try to use the muzzle flash to light my way enough to navigate
I realize that's worse than just staring into the black
It's just me and one exterior window to space waiting for the black abyss to do whatever it's going to do.
love it and I've bee there ;)
@@benjaminclement8437 Word. It's when the darkness grows teeth, interested teeth, teeth with eyes, that I truly feel at home.
The actual "forced to watch the screens while everyone dies" part is pretty much the story of a breaker camper. Really, while stories of normal marines are thrillers, the story of that guy can range from a "slice of life full reel o' nothing" to a tragedy. He's keeping his team nice and powered on that 1/8 failure chance, but in doing so he's forced to just watch their feeds as they make a slip and get shredded to pieces, step into a fence, get crossfired to death or any combination of the above with a period of running around practically blind until something gets them. And then he has nobody but himself to keep the power up for. And he has to move out and try to finish what three couldn't.
As someone looking into this game to buy, I have to say, I couldn't have been happier with your video. It was informative, showed what I was after, and actually had me looking forward to it. Nice video, mate.
I find it very unfortunate that both the game and your channel gets so little attention, for something well crafted.
don't worry about it, i make these for fun!
if people like them, they'll tell other people, and i'm just fine with that~
@@DrCurlyPhD well im gonna do that
This review resulted in 3 outcomes.
1. I bought the game
2. I subscribed to the channel
3. I had a chuckle.
"...It's good" just sold me on a 4 pack for my friends and i.
Your video is basically a love letter of Alien fans to Space Beast Terror Fright. I love it. You explain perfectly why we love this game because it successfully implant all element what a space scifi horror game should had like what in Aliens Movie.
Wish your channel and the game can get more attention
Managed to just stumble upon this after typing out the longest youtube comment I've ever made on a scathingly negative review of SBTF from 2015, and I still failed to bring up how the claustrophobic HUD/Visor, obnoxious effects and such - some of the reviewer's biggest complaints - actually work in the game's favour. This is an excellent breakdown.
people are very reluctant to suggest that media might be doing things on purpose!
contemporary criticism seems fixated on the idea of one-upping the material, which i find very weird!
@@DrCurlyPhD You'd think people would've learned from Dark Souls that the pain and suffering before you begin to master the rules of the game is the whole reason for its difficulty, the learning curve and knowledge seeking is an inseparable part of the experience.
Space Beast Terror Fright is absolutely a game that puts you in the shoes of one of the marines from Aliens, always a hairsbreadth away from getting his shit pushed in by an endless stream of one-hit-and-you're-dogmeat-pal monsters.
Meanwhile, if you'd prefer to simulate the role of Lieutenant Gorman from the same movie, look up the game Duskers. You're a person at a command console, watching a small team of remotely controlled drones follow your explicit orders on a schematic of whatever derelict you've matched airlocks with. There might be one or more of a few "infestations" hiding in the next room, but there are ways to figure it out.. and you'll have to adjust your tactics as the drones, their tools, and even your own ship deteriorate around you. Duskers is a game where finding out the bigger picture takes a definite second seat to just scraping together enough fuel and scrap to survive another few jumps.
This is absolutely my favorite video on Space Beast Terror Fright, and I've come back to watch it a few times. Fantastic work.
I would like to hear you prattle on about the state of development support as a marketable feature!
Wil Cornish I'd second that
Fantastic as always. If you made a patreon, I could promise at least one contributor
Late to the party, but this was phenomenally good.
An excellent breakdown and analysis of two of my favourite pieces of media.
I really enjoyed this video. I bought Space Beast Terror Fright back in 2015 and I've played it almost every day since then. It has some of the most intense and rewarding co-op play I've ever experienced. A masterpiece of minimalist game design.
On the few times I've played this game I've loved it. It legitimately feels like if spacehulk from 40K was a first-person horror game
Great job on the review!
I believe I did originally see this recommended in relation to Space Hulk - Deathwing, which is similar in a number of ways.
This review is a piece of art
3:01 Don't think I didn't recognize that Metroid music. That's ingrained into my mind from years of experience. (Good choice!)
It's funny how absolutely right you are about this. At least specifically to the feeling/experience of Aliens.
Another fantastic video essay. Thanks for all the content!
Despite the video being a little older I still watched it a few times because they're just as valid with very much less explored concept of horror rather than depriving you of information instead throwing so much at you you simply can't process it all.
At first isn't really too much of a problem when things are calm but I guess when you have 30 or more alien monsters running down the hallway at you and your helmets bombardement of information basically causes every alarm in your head to start screaming at you and cohesive thought and reason tends to get thrown out the window and replaced with a lot of screaming, panicking and gunfire sometimes in that order sometimes not but always in very large amounts.
Just squeeze the trigger as hard as you can walk backwards and hope to God you don't run out of bullets before the aliens run out of bodies or that your back hits a wall
Definitely getting this game with friends at some point, probably look back at it as a fun experience once the adrenaline and pure fear wears off XD
P.s. loved this video and the monkey escape one you did definitely going to be watching more, you're definitely up there in terms of quality with Jacob Geller
An update on the game, it has been out of Early Access for a while now. And with a good handful of updates, if you'd like to take a gander at it again.
really? i know the dev said they wanted to call it finished but it's still marked as early access on steam and as far as i know there hasn't been a news post saying they're done updating it. i've stayed playing it mind, it's still a belter
@@DrCurlyPhD I must have misremembered, my apologies. Although they have said that it should only take one (or two) more updates before they call it 'done' at the very least.
@@goodhit59 yep, i love this game to pieces so i'd love to see both this game finished and what - if anything - the dev does next
A great video. Super well crafted, you are fantastic!
Can't wait for you to get more subs, these videos deserve a large audience!
you and me both pal
Wow this channel is so amazing, didn't expect that really!
Jinkies you weren't kidding about flashing lights
This video is amazing, actually, high quality and great editing.
Excellent video essay. I've gotta say this game looks ridiculously fun to play. Does anyone know if it has bots for those of us with IRL friends who are sticks in the mud or-- gasp! -- are not PC game players?
alas! no sign of bots as far as i'm aware. it's a one-dev team so i can understand why they're not a priority.
I would like to hear you prattle on about the state of development support as a marketable feature!
You, my good sir, deserve all the subs on the internet. As always, very well-made video (simple but extremely well put together). Very good use of soundtrack (is that Super Metroid I hear?). The narration and ideas presented are all top notch. You are now my hero. And now I can never meet you.
Bob the Hollow why not?? did i die???
Curly Brace isn’t it a saying? That you should never meet your heroes (as they can’t possibly live up to expectations)?
ah yes that's a fair appreciation, judging by how little i meet my own expectations i can only imagine i'd disappoint others
thanks for watching my stuff
No need to thank me. It's a genuine pleasure. Couple of questions, if you wouldn't mind: do you play AAA games and (I really have to ask lol) have you ever played Dark Souls or Bloodborne?
PS: my wife never likes anything I show her. She liked this video. Kudos mate.
Bob the Hollow yeah i play some tripleA games, they're pretty expensive is the thing. there's a whole let's play of bloodborne on this very channel!
p.s: hi bob's wife!!
An awesome analysis. I like your perspective.
10:23 what other games can you recommend? The only ones I've played that reminded me of Aliens were Dead Space and DOOM III.
i think this game is probably the best i've played for capturing the spirit of the movie, but if you want something else good that has a similar energy you might want to give Duskers a try, it's a favourite of mine
This video got me interested so I searched a bit more since I commented here. For anyone else interested, try out Natural Selection 2. It's not exactly a horror game, but playing as a Marine on max graphics and lower brightness can be very fun :D
I can't get enough of this review. I've watched this about a dozen times, and YES. The game is EXACTLY THIS. Space Beast Terror Fright has finally exited Early Access recently, and I'm COMPLETELY SATISFIED even after all these years.
I can't shill this game enough, it is intense and has literally infinite replay value in many different game modes, it even has a weekly random "campaign" with highscores as well.
Netcode was stabilized and we even have a map table now!
I'm an eternal fan of this game, I have the same infantile hype for it I had for Quake 1 back in the 90's...
In fact, I've even made a Quake map that attempts to evoke a similar experience.
the map table is so fucking good
@@DrCurlyPhD Yes I'm rewatching after shilling it... again. :D
@@DrCurlyPhD And again. XD
And again. XDDD
I'm sold. That was an unexpectedly good watch.
What game is this that I show at the beginning, The 2D game or is it Space Beast Terror Fright 2D??
that's footage from Teleglitch, a game i covered in a previous video on my channel
I don't ordinarily like horror games too much as I already have anxiety and paranoia issues, but uh...this kind of reminds me of a really jacked up Zero Tolerance from the Genesis and that makes me wanna check it out.
Nice usage of the DmC OST
Excellent, simply excellent video . Love this game!
@9:50, you mention the evac crashing, its explained pretty clearly, with scenes. As the evac was in one spot and than came to get them, a Alien snuck aboard and killed the 2 crew members mid flight. As I have only ever watched the 3hr directors cut..is this not in the theatrical version?>?? seems like a scene that would be needed.....or yes you would be asking "uh..why is the evac just seemingly just crash landing for no apparent reason"
I remember that yes, they showed somehow that a xenomorph had snuck aboard. Maybe just from a terrified reaction shot of the pilot which suddenly went to a black screen IIRC.
we the viewers know why it went down. "Your evac crashed for reasons that were never made clear" He was describing that *from the point of view of the marines*. They didn't watch the director's cut, or the theatrical cut. They didn't see scenes of xenomorphs sneaking aboard or killing pilots. It just crashed, for reasons that were never made clear *to them*.
"If you're a normal person like Private Hudson however, let's just have a look at how your day is going"
Subbed, sorry that you didnt get much attention with this review, ive shared it.
I shit bricks whenever I play the game. Fucking visceral mate.
Hey mate! Nice vid!
Found this video because I wanted to know if the game is worth the money.
Stayed for the Super Metroid music.
And gushed at Aliens.
Really like the torvas bog theme durimg the aliens rant.
It's hella underrated though
Awesome video!
this is SO GOOD holy crap
This game is still in early access...the heck
no. it is done last year
what was the game he said at the beginning? Hotela glitch?
This is a request to hear you prattle on about the state of development support as a marketable feature
What an interesting and we'll made review
Damn good video!
Glad you've played Universal Paperclips.
Believe you reached the ending, right?
this is the aliens:colonial marines we should had...
When's the next video essay? Their excellent and really thought provoking!
you're very kind! i let the current one get away from me but i'm working on it right this second, hopefully it'll be out tomorrow evening or friday morning!
i've also done some work on a format that's less than ten minutes long, so stay tuned!
Curly Brace that's great, can't wait for your excellent work!
Love this.
Good review.
This video. It's good.
Really good!
Great video, I don't know the main topics of your channel, but if you are interested in study horror/sci-fi/claustrofobic/no-hope ambientation than I suggest you to go and search for the Universe of warhammer40k. great video
This was so we'll made
What game is on first minutes of the video ?
that's Teleglitch, an indie roguelike you can get on steam that i love very dearly
you can buy it here: store.steampowered.com/app/234390/Teleglitch_Die_More_Edition/
and i did a whole other video about it here: th-cam.com/video/gRtVZsS8gMQ/w-d-xo.html
Great game but doesn't feel very Alien to me because of how weak the xenos are compared to a few humans with guns. Alien Isolation is the only true Aliens game made to date.
I reckon you're right in the sense that it's not an Alien game, but it is an *Aliens* game.
Alien Isolation perfectly captures the feeling of the first movie, while SBTF captures the feeling of the second movie.
Turn off FOV FX. Doing that increased my mission survival a lot. Try it.
You assume that optimised play is the desired goal.
that muzzle flash is god awful
