Nice review, Joe! I've been really impressed with the Leuchtturm notebooks as well, especially all of the little 'extra' features you pointed out. Thanks for the vid :)
I've enjoyed Moleskine notebooks as of recently, because before then, I used any old notebook to record my thoughts and ideas. I never realized the difference in having a better notebook until I discovered Moleskines, but I also purchased a pocket blank Leuchtturm and I'm excited to crack it open and see how it is. Also you've inspired me to name my notebooks, so thank you haha.
It's so cool that you're using your grandpappy's old pen. Also one fo the better notebook reviews I've seen, and I'm a shameful notebook nerd. Pretty into the cahiers right now, kind of moving past the old thick hardbounds, but excellent review.
I have to say, this has been by far the most informative and enjoyable review I have ever listen to, ever. Simply a joy to watch, listen, and ultimately answer my question of, whats the difference between a moleskin and this new brand called leuchturm. You just got 3 more subscribers. Ive just got into journaling and I'm coming to your channel for all my questions. Excellent work, keep them coming!
Frank Morris Oh how lovely - thank you, Frank! I'll do my best for you. With feedback like that I feel driven to record more videos. Good luck with the journaling!
Joe, I love your video here. I do have to say that I just started writing my novels and short stories in Moleskines. I was just using my computer, but I really enjoy actually writing all of my thoughts down. I do have to say that I will probably stick with Moleskine.
Hey Jake, could I ask what wins you over on the moleskine notebook? I'm just asking because I recently bought a moleskine notebook. I didn't really know much about the notebooks and I haven't started using it just yet. Still, I'm excited about using it and compare to the other notebooks I've used, I feel the quality of the moleskine is much better. But I want to try the 1917 and see how that goes as well. Still, being that moleskine was my first notebook, I'm a bit inclined to stay with them. I wanted to know what makes you stay with moleskine.
Thanks a lot for your review! Helps a lot to decide which one I will give a try! Don't have any experience with the better notebooks, but will give the Leuchtturm a try now. I am sick of the cheap ones that fall apart way too easily.
Great stuff. I like a Moleskine Reporter myself, but I'm certainly open to other makes. One small note: the Moleskine Reporter also features perforated rear pages that are easy to tear out and share.
Thank you so much for your detailed review of the Leuchtturm! I'm sold and will most likely buy one. One thing I do like of the Moleskines, is that they have more 'specialty' options, such as the Style, Recipe, Gardening, etc. If Leuchtturm would add more of these to their arsenal, then they would catch me on all fronts. Thanks again!
Ah yes, good point. I don't tend to go for the 'specialty' notebooks, but I can see their appeal if that's the way you organise your notes. Glad you liked the review! I've just put up a new video with 3 other notebooks to think about so you might find that useful too. I hope so, at least!
The Leuchtturm covers seem very similar to the Moleskine covers. Perhaps they're very slightly softer, but I never really noticed any difference at all until you made me check for one with your comment! Thanks :)
Hey, thanks for the great comment. You can get my books from any book retailer (shop or website). And you can get SIGNED copies straight from me via my website. Thanks for the great support! Don't forget - Jimmy Coates: Blackout is out on June 6th. Spread the word.
Great video Joe. I love Moleskine but I can`t write with my fountain pens and bottled ink in them because the cheap paper causes ink feathering and bleed. I just ordered a Leuchtturm and am waiting for it to see how the paper takes the ink so thank you for this video because before it arrives you have answered that question for me. I`m looking forward to seeing how my J. Herbin ink works on the Leuchtturm paper.
Got my first moleskine 3 weeks ago and love it. Should I go for a leuchtturm next?? does the extra 0.5 inch of height really matter that much? I really don't like the date label on top of each page but I haven't seen a leuchtturm in person. Does it really stand out that much?
I am so glad I came upon this video! I adore notebooks. (And pens, as I used to do calligraphy.) I've been toying with the idea of starting a book journal for 2015. I've kept track of my reading on an online journal for years, but... I don't know. I miss writing by hand. To my horror, I've noticed that the quality of my handwriting has declined through the years, simply because I never have need to write by hand anymore! I've gotten used to journaling online, so I don't think I'll go back to written journals. I can't write fast enough to keep up with my thoughts anyway. But maybe a journal specifically for the books I've read in a year might be doable. The only fancier notebooks I've ever seen are the Moleskine ones, so I did not even know there were other options! From all you've said here, the Leuchtturm ones seem superior. One question that came to mind was bleed-through of the paper. Is the paper thick enough for that not to happen. Although... I haven't looked at the price yet. Maybe they are out of my reach. Darn, I hadn't thought of that.
The prices of these two types of notebook are very similar. In some places, I've noticed the leuchtturm1917 is even a little cheaper than that moleskine. The paper is definitely thick enough to avoid any issues with bleed-through, though it will depend what kind of pen and ink you're using. If you're worried about that and you use a fountain pen, I strongly suggest you check out my newer video, which is about a couple of amazing notebooks which use 'Tomoe River' paper. That kind of paper is miraculously thin and light, but takes ink better than any notebook paper I've ever tried - no bleed-through, and so, so smooth to write on. A real joy. Hope you find the notebook you like! Let me know what you think :)
I've been trying to decide between the Moleskin and the Midori MD....but after your video...I'm going to get a Leuchtturm. Love the archival tape idea.
I've never thought about it... but I don't think I've ever been more interested in notebooks in my life :) Also discombobulated is 100% my new favorite word
Thank you Shari, I'm glad you liked it :) Let me know how you get on with your new notebooks! Also, take a quick look at the follow-up video I made, if you like, with some other recommendations.
Moleskine v Leuchtturm1917 - for ten minutes. Yup, I go on about it for TEN MINUTES. By the end you won't believe I'm still talking. But you will know what to buy me as a gift this year...
I'm an unpublished writer with 9 awful novels to my credit (and my current novel which seems more promising). I've filled a lot of notebooks because I write out my notes and first drafts. I agree completely that quality paper makes a big difference. I've never tried Leuchtturm 1917, but I can get just as excited about Apica and Kokuyo, my two favorite brands. It's easy to talk about something we are excited about or care about.
Leuchtturm 1917 North America No problem. Delighted to help spread the word about your beautiful products. I have a few other brands of notebook to look at now as well, so I'll probably be mentioning Leuchtturm1917 again in videos to come. Very happy to support you in future so keep in touch: joe [at] joecraig [dot] co [dot] uk
***** I now use mainly fountain pens too, so I've explored quite a few other notebook options. Haven't tried Quo Vadis yet so I will! I'm going to make another video soon to talk about some of my favourite new ones. Have you tried these two: www.nanamipaper.com and paperforfountainpens.com? Wonderful paper and notebooks.
***** The Tamoe River paper is beautiful. It's unbelievably thin and light, but somehow the ink doesn't show through. Wonderful to write on - a soft glide.
Ah, wonderful. So glad you like it! Paper and notebooks can be such a personal thing, with the feel of the hand, pen, ink and so on. I'll try out those others you mentioned when I get the chance.
To the best of my recollection, Moleskine notebooks also have perforated pages in the back, at least for their pocket-sized notebooks. However, I may be mistaken, since I haven't touched my Moleskine for at least 6 months. Sadly, I've learned that I can only bring myself to use pocket notebooks if they're reporter-bound, and Moleskine paper does indeed work a bit poorer than... well, actually it's not great paper in general, so I can't bring myself to buy a Moleskine I might use.
Very useful video for notebook nerds like me, nice to hear other producers try to come up with little improvements to the familiar stationery. I mostly use Moleskines with my cool flat Moleskine pen that clips to the hard cover, but will probably try a Leuchtturm the first chance I get after this video. P.S.: The paper on some of my Moleskine journals and maybe even notebooks (not sure) did bleed through in the past so right paper is a concern.
I think the paper is a little better in the Leuchtturm. If you're using a fountain pen, check out a video I just put up with some new notebooks which are perfect for fountain pen users. Some wonderful paper in those.
Thanks for the comparison. I thought of going for moleskine but now i have decided to go with leuchtturm instead. I am spoilt with colors of the book cover. I wonder how many will i end up buying if i cant make up my mind XD
Look. Dear Joe Craig, I would like to get ahold of these books. How much would you be able to give a copy of all Jimmy Coates books. They are the best books I have ever read. You are a genius my man. Please reply ASAP
+EJM3 I haven't tried finding them online yet but I'm in London and they stock them in a few stores here, like art stores and even a couple of good bookshops.
+Joe Craig ah ok I live the United States so I'm guessing it will be harder for me to find them in some stores, I always see moleskin but i'll keep looking around, if I can't find it, I might have to order it online.
Good luck with your search. If you do manage to find some on sale in the US then be sure to let us know because I think I've seen similar comments from people in your position!
Yes, I've found the same. Thanks for commenting! If you mainly use a fountain pen, there are some notebooks in my follow-up video you might like, so check it out if you're interested.
"I don't know if you can see but I tend to name my notebooks after US presidents. i don't know why I started doing that." hahahaha this made me laugh. Thanks for the input though, I'll have to try a leuchtturm next!
I FEEL SO STUPID I CANT BELIEVE I DIDN'T THINK ABOUT LOOKING UP A REVIEW BEFORE PURCHASING A MOLESKINE! I thought MOLESKINE would have amazing paper quality but after this I'm scared to receive my MOLESKINE in the mail! Excuse me while I go cry and question my decisions in life :(
Don't panic Edward! Moleskines are still really good and loads of people use them every day and are very happy with them. I still have a small pile of them myself. So I'm sure you'll love your moleskine. (But next time, ask me first, OK? Hehe.)
One thing that keeps me going back to moleskine is the dimensions are just absolutely eprfect, and when one fo their competitors trying to edge up on them by being a wee bti bigger or a wee bit smaller it doesn't do it for me. Moleskine, for me, totally nails the dimensions. Plus I don't know of any decent cahier type threadbound noties, because threadbound all the way.
i totally switched too. I did a review on comparing Moleskin and Leuchtturm1917 as well, but more focused on the Leuchtturm1917 weekly planner on my blog (it's in Chinese otherwise I'd share). anyways, hooray love Leuchtturm1917
i agree! I think because of the famous people that used the Moleskine - it has been overrated. However, i'm sure if Leuchtturms existed back in Leonardo Da Vinci's times, he would use these instead.
I've been wanting to kick Moleskine in their butt for years because of the thin paper. I have 4 of them, and the 2 are sketchbook paper, and one is watercolour paper which is much better than the regular paper, but don't come in other colours than Black. So I made the switch to Leuchtturm1917 last year.
Hi Joe, beautiful video and beautiful guy. I totally agree as a professor for german linguistics :-) Where do you live in the US? Greetings, Michael Best wishes from Germany, Michael
i agree. Leuchtturm1917 notebooks are far superior to Moleskine. i do like Moleskine however, although Leuchtturm1917 does everything that Moleskine does, only alot better.
Yes I agree. I think I'll still use Moleskines regularly - partly because I still have a whole stash of them! But in future I'll buy Leuchtturms over Moleskines.
Also, how rude of me. Great little video. It's nice litening to people talk about stationery. You're right though, they're great notebooks. I love the colours :D
Moleskine is hyped up and overpriced toilet paper. You may also enjoy using a Rhodia Webnotebook or a Quo Vadis Habana; good quality paper that works well with fountain pens.
+Casey Hay excellent! Wishing you loads of creativity with your notebooks.
I suddenly have the urge to buy notebooks, my brain is associating your uber hotness to notebooks.
Errrrrrrrr... thanks :)
You had me at "a whole shelf of notebooks that I've yet to use."
Aw, thanks, Liora :)
It's so cool that you're using your grandpappy's old pen. Also one fo the better notebook reviews I've seen, and I'm a shameful notebook nerd. Pretty into the cahiers right now, kind of moving past the old thick hardbounds, but excellent review.

which is the best size for someone that intends to carry it around with them?
Nice comparisation. Currently i've a Moleskin left, but i will write to my last page of them: "go, and looking for Leuchtturm".
Guys this guy is awesome
Aw, thanks :)
Great review! Thanks for posting!!!
Great video thanks. The Leuchturm with 90gsm Rhodia paper, now I think that would be the perfect notebook for a fountain pen user.

How is the Leuchtturm cover? I used a Rhodia - loved the paper - but I hated the squishy cover!
A very interesting and informative review, thank you for doing it. I too prefer the Leuchtturm.
+Seamus Houghton Thanks for the kind comment :)
Thank you for both notebook review

you could make an excellent notebook salesman
Haha - thanks, I think :) I've done a follow-up video too, with 3 other notebooks.
wow the page numbers, really useful, they need to put it in more notebooks
Yeh you did
Thanks for the comparison. I thought of going for moleskine but now i have decided to go with leuchtturm instead. I am spoilt with colors of the book cover. I wonder how many will i end up buying if i cant make up my mind XD

You seem like the most interesting person ever.
Where do you buy your leuchtturm 1917 notebooks? at a store? or are they only sold online?
+EJM3 I haven't tried finding them online yet but I'm in London and they stock them in a few stores here, like art stores and even a couple of good bookshops.

Thanks Joe, I'll be giving the Leuchtturm a go.
I have switched early 2014. The paper is much better for fountain pens and fine line markers, and I like to have that little more width space
Yes, I've found the same. Thanks for commenting! If you mainly use a fountain pen, there are some notebooks in my follow-up video you might like, so check it out if you're interested.
Is that a cashmere sweater you are wearing?
"I don't know if you can see but I tend to name my notebooks after US presidents. i don't know why I started doing that." hahahaha this made me laugh. Thanks for the input though, I'll have to try a leuchtturm next!
because is a good advise, from someone that know!.. thanks this is a helpful video
hey Joe Craig remember you went to wanstead church school and gave a girl your book
+Natha Same Yes, of course I remember!

Can we also see the endorsement check Leuchtturm1917 sent? =p
He kind of looks like a male version of Keira Knightley.
+anon ymous Ha. That might be my favourite comment ever. Thanks :)
+anon ymous he looks more like Ash from Evil Dead
i actually really like this video!
Lu Kraft refillable notebook, with brown lined paper. Check it out, not for every one. Great video, thanks so much.
Leuchtturm with linen covers are the only way to go. In dark green? Beautiful.
Linen covers on a Leuchtturm? Sounds great. I didn't know you could get that.
www.leuchtturm1917.com/en/content/book-linen
Limited range of colours and ruling but they're really nice.
drguybh Wow - thanks! I haven't seen those on sale anywhere in the UK. I'll ask around.
Was this really a comperason or over ten Minutes a Hym about the unbelievable, amazing, wonderful Leuchtturm Notebooks?
it's good to see someone else that is completely dotty about paper and notebooks.
Miss1Adventure Hehe. Thanks! :)
just bought one after watching this vid
Really hope you like it! Let me know.
Just got it, and I love it already lol. The paper quality is definitely better and the page numbers are a plus. Gonna be using these from now on
great stuff.
the apparent grandeur of this video cannot be underestimated.
Yay naming Moleskine's! I'm not alone l9l.
This inspired me to get a dotted leuchtturm and name it Taft. so thats exactly what im doing
I really wanted to buy blackout but this problem occur ed with my dads credit card and now I hve to wait till my birthday
That's a shame! But don't worry, I'm sure your birthday will come round pretty soon. I hope the book is worth the wait!
Excellent video. I enjoyed it very much
although I use Moleskine
Great! Glad you liked it :)
i totally switched too. I did a review on comparing Moleskin and Leuchtturm1917 as well, but more focused on the Leuchtturm1917 weekly planner on my blog (it's in Chinese otherwise I'd share). anyways, hooray love Leuchtturm1917
Great! It's a shame I can't understand Chinese :( But yes, hooray for beautiful notebooks :)

Hi Joe, beautiful video and beautiful guy. I totally agree as a professor for german linguistics :-) Where do you live in the US? Greetings, Michael
Best wishes from Germany, Michael
Hi Michael. Thanks for the lovely comment! I'm not in the US at all... I live in London :)
love the video!!!!🖒🖒🖒🖒🖒👍👍
Thank yooooou!
I believe your Leuchtturm1917 is Taupe.
Taupe! Yes! Good call :)
Also, how rude of me. Great little video. It's nice litening to people talk about stationery. You're right though, they're great notebooks. I love the colours :D
I use molskines
I still do too occasionally :)
bullshit. He inspired me to name my journals after famous writers. I'm on Kerouac now.
u cme in 2 my school on tuesday
He came to my school and inbarssed me
That sucks.
Annie Ferns Sorry about embarrassing you. I don't think I meant to :(
How can one man go on for ten minutes about two notebooks? WHY DO I DO THIS TO MYSELF?
What wrong with this video, is TH-cam going to the DOGS?
Moleskine is hyped up and overpriced toilet paper. You may also enjoy using a Rhodia Webnotebook or a Quo Vadis Habana; good quality paper that works well with fountain pens.
It isn't a MOLESKIN. It is a MOLA-SKEENA.
