NEVER Cut Back These Native Plants in Fall

- Our native plants have so much work still to do over the fall and winter, so make sure you leave these plants standing! Having a native garden usually means we don't do a fall cleanup, and instead let the ecosystem and the environment work its magic.

That is a hefty squirrel 😮
Yeah this one is DEFINITELY surviving the winter! 😂
I planted my Joe Pye Weed in full sun. It picked itself up and moved into partial shade across the path!
These plants know where to go! 🌱🌱🌱
I have the messiest yard on the block, and I'm proud of that. Ohhhh...I need to find some Queen of the Prairie.
Messiest yard in the whole subdivision here! Do your neighbors hate you, too?
Fortunately, most of my gardens are in my "wild" area in the back, so it's no big deal to leave them. But even my front garden stays put. The neighbors don't complain. My wife did make be cut down the cup plants right off the deck. I tossed them back behind my wild area. Hopefully any insects will survive the move. I've actually seen a woodpecker on my cup plants in early fall, pecking for bugs. It was pretty cool. And your hair is adorable!
So cool to see a woodpecker on the cup plants! Your garden is really working! 🌱🌱🌱
This vid just made me feel great about my choices here where most neighbors can’t tolerate a random leaf… I love that my decision makes a small positive contribution to the fragile state of the ecosystem Thx for the therapy!!
Any time! 🌱🌱🌱
Nice video! I tried winter sowing prairie dropseed this past January, but none of the seeds sprouted 😢. I just ordered some plants - here’s hoping!
You got this!
Prairie Dropseed needs no cold stratification. If you have some extra seeds still try sowing when the soil is warm.
Hey thank you for continuing to post even though you've had a hard year. Always love your content.
Thank you so much! Looking forward to making more. 🌱🌱🌱
Great video! Zone 8a, South Carolina here! I like to experiment with known "annuals" here to see if they come back. Quite a few have over the years! Your take on leaving things has confirmed that leaving annuals like Samantha Lantana in the ground, even if it dies off, insects and "creatures" will benefit from that. Thank you!
I laughed at the lizard mention because I actually live in Florida and have lots of lizards!
I love it! 🦎🦎🦎
Thanks for another great video!
Joe pye weed hard to control…well good thing it’s in next to my lemon balm they can help keep each other in check 😂
Your hair looks fine. I hope you are feeling ok. I leave all my plants except things with mildew or disease. Thanks for taking time for the video.
Thanks for the well wishes! 🌱🌱🌱
Re: lizards
We’ve been in our house (TX z8) for almost 8 years…I’m the gardener/yard care manager…and only this summer did I see a non-anole lizard…we have Texas Spiny Lizards! 🎉 I’m delighted!
That's awesome! 🌱🌱🌱
Thanks for a great video. The basil advice was so useful!
You're welcome, thanks for watching! 🌱🌱🌱
Super informative! Thank you... I have not cut back this autumn... andbesp have left my coneflower seeds up... we do have a lot of birds around us as we are surrounded by forest.
Shoutout to oenothera biennis as well for quite possibly being prettier as winter interest than when it's in bloom.
Ooh I have to check that out! 🌱🌱🌱
Another great one is sunflowers! That was the one i was told to grow by the old ladies at the community garden
Definitely!
Love the cameos.
Great video. I’m gathering milk jugs for winter sowing…need to find some seeds for the Prairie Dropseed you had on this video 👍. This was my very 1st year for clearing NOTHING in my garden. My 75 year old mother is horrified by it. Hope you are doing well Lisa.
That's great! Thanks for the well wishes. 🌱🌱🌱
For perennials that bees use to hibernate, should you cut the top of the stems so that the bees can have it easier to climb in? In other words do they need an assessable entrance? Btw, I live in Chicago so the wind can be harsh. I leave my veggie plants in the ground to keep the good soil from blowing away.
You don't need to trim the stems to help the bees, they know exactly how to get in there! 🌱🌱🌱
I got stung really badly by wasps who nested in my messy left uncut on purpose garden. Gonna cut things back because I'm afraid of gardening now
I understand that! It hurts! The wasps still make nests underground even if its just grass, so I don't think the vegetation attracts them too much but if I got stung I might be extra cautious too!
I got stung by a honeybee this summer but I was wearing my glove, so it wasn't as bad as it could have been but it still hurt!!
